I had a black Astra GTE Mk 1 in the 1980s, and it was a fast, comfortable car, especially with those Recaros! The only issue I had was with the ECU, which developed a fault not long after I bought the car. This was easily replaced by the car dealer & I had many miles of trouble free motoring after that..........this video brings back lots of happy memories! 👍
I had one too, in 1994, spitting image of the one shown here, lovely comfy car, quick and reliable. In the summer of that year, my ex (with whom I was still on good terms) asked if she could borrow the car to take her mum shopping in London (setting off from Hereford) 48 hours later, they're back safe and sound, but she'd been rear ended on Wembley Hill! Car written off, and that was that!
I had a 1984 gte in red , awful brakes but loved that car.
Elvis enthusiasm is just brilliant.
I think the perfect WD combination is Mike and Elvis
Love these 2 and DO NOT CHANGE THEM
ALWAYS LOVED MIKE AS IM FROM HIS AREA AND ELVIS IS SUPERB !!
Opel Kadett D GTE! 😍❤️
Astra
Very talented Elvis 🌟
I had one of these back in the day. Was a lot of fun!!
Mike and Elvis, I have watched WD for many years and the only complaint I can make is that these 9+ minute videos do not cut it as they are to short.
Is there anyway you could get the full episodes on CZcams?
I would even tolerate commercials just to see the show again.
Thanks and keep up the great work.

At last the show is watchable again . Elvis is more in the Ed school of mechanics . At least you get some useable tips and knowledge again ,bravo . Back to basics ,it was always the better formula .
I owned 2 in Black, a Y reg one which was a headache, cylinder head off it 4 times in a week, it was cracked! it was the nicer looking of the two i had, the 2nd one was an A reg with a 4 speed gearbox, it was quick when it was put to the test in the mid 90`s, the races on the roads with custom mk2 Cavaliers! it was one of my favs of the 80`s hot hatch and with the letters GTE on the seats, it made the mk1 Astra GTE even more special. I was aged 23-24 year old when i owned those cars, i was quite lucky to own 2 let alone the same colour, i was known for having nice older cars from the 80s.
I had Mk1 Astra GTE in white, a 1984 "A" reg (registered on 29th Feb 1984) from 89 to 93. Cracking motor, had almost 120,000 miles on the clock when I sold it. Still on original engine, gearbox and clutch.
I Love the Mk1 Astra it's a great car ,I miss mine every day.
Do you like fiat 126p?
*Ive alway loved WD but i realy felt the show plumeted down hill after ED left it just wasnt the same anymore.i wasnt to keen on ant but i gota say ELVIS realy is doing a amazing job and with elvis WD is back to how it used to be.........big thanks to mike and elvis..........one of all our tv shows is back to how it should be......*
I must say I've liked all three of the lads in the WD workshop. All absolute geniuses at what they do and all got on well with Mike. I loved Edd and wen he left, I didn't want to like Ant, but his presenting style, skill and knowledge won me over very quickly. As for Elvis, well, if any fans don't like Elvis, they've got no heart...!
I had a red one, my first hot hatch. Loved it. Saw it years later painted purple being driven by a drug dealer!
Wounded 😢
Just two cover caps on the front spoiler are missing. Driving without these caps gave the car some extra cooling (towing a caravan in the mountains). The Astra had the normal mirrors that all astra's and kadett's had. In Europe, the Kadett GTE had Engelmann mirrors. Looked way better. My Kadett GTE had a glass sunroof, 100% original from the factory, that you could tilt or remove the glass panel and store it in the boot (with a cover). It was my first car and bought it in 1989. And sold it in 2022! What a good car that was. A GTE lover is going to restore it like new. I kept my Capri that was always parallel in my life next to the GTE since 1992. The Capri, i restored in 1995 and is still like new.
Mk1 Astra GTE, had 2 black A reg and a white B reg in the 80s. Loved them. Still look good. Rest looks correct 👍
Briliant odl school car, simple, joy to drive, I realy miss cars like this
I had a red one of these. Bought it when it was 18 months old. I fitted a full Janspeed exhaust and manifold (that didn't last long!) Lowered spring kit, Lucas 20-20 spots and 5 spoke Revolution alloys that transformed the looks. Not as quick as the later 16v's but was a nice little car. They did suffer from Vauxhall poor build quality and rust was standard fit. 😢
The registration of this car rings a bell
I had the SR version back in the day. Same colour, same wheels, same recaro interior, just the carburettor version. It was a great car but eventually rotted out on the rear wheel arches, inner and outer. I’m sure mine had black wheel arch covers on it.
well i had the mk1 1.2 boot version it was quick . you sure was lucky i was always looking for the sr version and only to this day seen 1 in real life .oh treasured memeories ay
Ex SR owner here too but mine was the even rarer 1.3 Kadett SR. Great first car back in 92.
Nicely shot & edited
Nice motor
Had one from brand new, was a little flying machine.great gearbox.
I wish Elvis did more with Mike 😊
I had a Mk1 Astra GTE in Carmine red...it succumbed to major rust...trouble spots are...the body kit..it will let water and crud eat away at the wheel arches, sills and boot.. the floating calipers always siezed up, the blower motor corrodes..but still the most favourite car I had...
I had a diamond white Astra GTE MK1 in the early 90's and to this day it's my all-time favourite car. If I had a lottery win it would be my first purchase followed by an Aston Martin.
Did you even spray some sort of penetrating oil or ATF down the cylinder bores before rotating the crank?
Was thinking the same , I’m doing a triumph spitfire up that hadn’t run for years so sprayed fogging oil down the spark plug holes , left a few days then turned engine by hand and repeated. Now have a great running engine with great oil pressure and no rebuild. Simpler engine but still 🤷
How does he keep his jumper so clean?
I’d be a mess by now !
God that is beautiful I remembered my brothers back when I were 12 and he picked me up from school it was the bees' knees
I had the black Astra Mk2 16valve loved that car to
Great looking cars they were
The mechanic who never gets dirty
Spray painting the "chrome" on the front logo (7:53) and the hood is gaping like 2 cm on the drivers side (7:53) - seriously?
A neighbours son had a stunning example of an Astra GTE 15-20 years ago, unfortunately he passed away in tragic circumstances, and my neighbour has also since passed away.
I have no idea where the car went.
Wow!
1/2 of an episode is better then no episode.
Love it! I love astras had 2 in the past and they were great cars...very underrated.
Don't get me wrong they do put em together nicely 💯
I used to have a car very similar to that I had a 1985 escort GT turbo they only made twenty-five hundred of them I believe it was black with the black and red interior really beautiful little Putt-Putt car very quick for back in the 80s and very rare you see a lot of escort GT but you don't see many turbos? Thanks again for the great videos
I bought a silver one from new. Badged Vauxhall but everything underneath the bonnet was in German. This was/is my wife favourite car. Up to 100mph it could live with the fast Fords after that the XR4’s started to pull away. Only reason it was sold was child no2 came along. Should have kept it, Bangers and Cash sold an early mk2 for £27k recently.
Elvis you made that headliner look a hard job , 20 min job at the most .
white was the colour, dad had the cavalier 1.8 cdi (petrol not diesel) that I passed my test in...same engine...think 115bhp. I raced an Opel mantra on the A77 from Glasgow to Ayr and beat him ...wont say what speeds we reached ....mental considering !!
The Engine Ford couldn't make, this 1.8 injection unit revved up quickly and stuck the power down, much faster than on paper suggested.
At a time Ford were using the asthmatic 1.6 CVH, this was up there with the Golf GTI as a real hot hatch.
am i missing something here but I have never seen the underside of shell bearings lubricated before inserting! surely its just the bearing face to the crank that requires lube?
It makes them easier to insert.
I’ve only ever built 3 engines but was told off an old guy that lubricating both sides can cause it to spin the bearings on initial start up.
@@carl_marks1626 absolutely right. If you apply lube to the back of the shells, you can get a false reading when you torque up the caps.
@@jasonsansome5579 Yeah. Never oil the "backside" of the bearings.
@@carl_marks1626 Very unlikely as there is a raised notch in corner of the shell bearing that fits into a small cut out in the block to stop it spinning. Same with the bearing into the con rod. Pause the video at around 3 mins 46 secs and you'll see it.
This is the only Astra that I’ve ever liked
I need to see the whole episode of this
Is there an upload ?
The Opel(Vauxhall) super boss was only made available in SA , a real golf killer, pity it wasn't produced for the world market as it's a brilliant car.
Where can I see the full video?
Can I buy it in YT films?
I had one,, built a C23let engine, 4wd with celica gearbox =)
It´s still alive, but located in Norway now.
I like the way Elvis never has any oil or dirt on his best tops.
I've got a white mk1 in my garage, had it 30 years.
Love these clips; however really get pissed off as we know the cost of doing it, but the sale price gets chopped and we don't know what it went for!
It was always going to need a full rebuild I'd do it for peace of mind if nothing else
Quality
Nice car
Elvis strips an engine in smarter clothes than I use to go down the pub!!!
Here in brasil had a similar car "Monza SR"
I have really started to enjoy these WD episodes because of Elvis so I'm willing to accept Elvis to replace Edd. There is so much good energy on both of them. Ok. I like Elvis.
Elvis replaced Ant..
@@paulrak In big picture he didn't.
Know what you mean.
a friend has 3 of these sat in a garage
That'd have started and run as it was. Not well with that pick up pipe, but it would have fired up ok. Good old Family II eight valvers 😀
Astra gte on wheeler dealers
Should of put a red top in it. I'm sure they would of got one for cheap
I had a Mk 1 Astra GTE when i was young & spent loads on it. I wished i kept pics of it. I put a red top in that and spent loads on kit, even brought the Irmsher twin head light kit.
I didn't go for a pimp mobile but styled it to look like it came out of the factory like a sports special edition
I have an A-reg black mk1 GTE in my garage that is awaiting for me to restore. I will certainly have my work cut out.
A Vauxhall Lotus Carlton to restore would make a good WD project 😀😀 too . WD have done quite a few Fords but not many fast Vauxhalls so it was nice to see an Astra GTE
Elvis’s hair is getting greyer with every episode he works with Mike. Soon gonna look like Edd if he’s not careful.
How can one keep his sweater so neat and clean doing engine work?
Called a jumper
Fantastic european Kadett mk I
I had a white mk1 astra gte driving round as a teenager with no licence ended up leaving it at the side of the motorway I cud cry 😢 😭
No word about the whole reboring the block and stuff with regard to the cost 😂… was that for free?
All the way from The Netherlands... Lol Scotland is probably further away.
Hello everyone does anyone know if a Mark one Astra GTE with the registration B341TJX is still around
In south africa that is an opel kadett.
It's the same in Europe.
Where can I find this ceiling? I make restoration gte in uzbekistan
Opel Kadett😁
Astra 😁
Dammn a Mk1
family 2 motor, made in Australia.
I am pretty sure that’s the Australian made ‘ family 2 ‘ engine
Assembly lube onto the main crank journals?
👍👍👍
The boot spoiler is missing 🤔 nice restoration though 👌
Weren't fitted with rear spoiler as standard mate. Think there was an irmscher one available though.
🤤 😮❤
Привет как можно найти запчасти опель кадет
I hate that this show is no longer on Motortrend channel
Where is Astra? I see only Opel Kadett. 🧐
Open your eyes it’s astra
What is the engine code ?
18E
@@Wil-70-NL C18E ?
Engine code is 18E!
@@vladislavdimitrov4646 no, just 18E.
@@Wil-70-NL Thanks
You've really dumb down the mechanical part of the show. Next step is a cartoony cloud over the engine with random drill and wrench sounds
Kadet?
Astra
in Deutschland hieß es kaddet d, falls du es nicht wusstest
Astra
That car is about as British as I am
Kadet D in Euro not Astma :)

Something about that GTE it doesn’t look as good as the others
Way way too fast through the big repairs
Elvis, Why don't you Run a hone thru it First, And see how bad it is, I have seen way worse than that clean up.
A 1,8 liter fuel injected econobox from the early 1980’s. Is this an attractive car?
That is entirely subjective. It is certainly a valuable one, which becomes more valuable with each passing year.
Elvis wears white trainers some mechanic NOT
