Thank you for these videos. My professors at school always seem to be determined on making everything sound more complicated than it actually is. We all need this sort of simple explanations.
Tim, these are fantastic. I had searched high and low for quality set of videos on Lit theory so I could flip my next Honors English unit and focus on discussion and application. You've put together a great set of videos.
+Steven Irwin Thanks! I wanted a simple starting point for my students for the same purpose. I've been pleased at the general reception of the videos. Glad you can use them!
That was helpful, my professor was pregnant so we ( my classmates and I ) didn't get the lessons very well, and it looked so hard to grasp, going to pass an exam tomorrow and yeah that was helpful, Thank you.
Thank you, this is my second video so far and it is so much more clear to me than the overview that I got from my teacher that was making my brain short circuit.
This quick lesson was very helpful to me. I was having a difficult time understanding this subject in my textbook for literature and this made the light bulb go on! Thanks!
Employment of New Criticism is not about the uncovering of textual meaning embedded in a text but the deeper understanding of literature in its transcendental aspects. Values are apprehended not through the explication of meaning but through the embodiment of its spirit in a disinterested fashion.
Keep up the good work!
The essays your professor asked you to read are really helpful in the deeper understanding of the nuances of New Critical approaches not a mere burdensome requirement. Believe me, you need to expand your horizon on this perspective because this You Tube video constraints the understanding of this critical school of literary criticism.
Great Work Tim! I was wondering if you could help me out by recommending some of them canonical essays, specific chapters by the New Critics like I.A Richards, Cleanth Brooks and others.
I usually use Brooks's "Heresy of Paraphrase". But your best bet is to get the Norton Anthology of Theory and Criticism for a great collection of all the best essays.
Tension is used to describe ideas in opposition, such as paradoxes, ironies, or other juxtaposed opposites. Look at a story like "The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings" by Marquez. In the story we have a man with wings, which remind us of freedom, but he's trapped in a cage. The man also might be an angel, but he's dirty and gross and his miracles are not helpful. There's a tension between freedom and bondage and another between the angelic and the earthly, making the story complex and interesting.
I'm convinced that New Criticism destroyed my interest for literature in high school. Thankfully, I went to a progressive liberal arts college that pretty much torpedoed new criticism, and I have loved literature ever since.
I always hear binary opposition. I have a few questions to ask, so that I can fully grasp the whole concept of binary opposition: 1. What is the definition of binary opposition (in Layman's term)? 2. Does binary opposition appear in EVERY literary theory? 3. How does it work on those theories? Thank you in advance, Mr. Nance.
It appears in almost all literary works. These are pairs of related terms that are opposite in meaning. Eg. Positive & negative, hero & villain, male & female
Wonderful explanation Can you explain expressive realism and post saussaurean and reader power plus the plurality of meaning and construction of meaning and subject in ideology by Catherine belsey (critical practice)
Allow me to declare that you do outperform to define literary theory and criticism and make it relatable to students better than literary critics and intellectuals themselves!!! If I were a dean of a uni, I would've hired you as the head of Arts, Humanities, and Languages department.
Read closely, painstakingly, you make Value judgement, book has depth, look for tension complexity, book oppose other meaning, well unified, look for what makes the tension, what unifies the text as a whole,
Tim Nance I have been asked to explain the statement; Theory before 'theory'-Liberal humanism, by Peter Barry , taken from his book ' Beginning theory' . Well I have to do that by tomorrow and it is hell confusing.
He just taught me in 2.5 min what my professor has been "explaining" for the last 3 weeks...I hate college
same
@@Danielachannel Drop out then...

Nice, I have to do a presentation on this in under 8 mins.
Damn right, even the professor didn't teach that well ;)
Thank you for these videos. My professors at school always seem to be determined on making everything sound more complicated than it actually is. We all need this sort of simple explanations.

Tim, thank you for giving a great presentation! They are concise and NEVER boring! Great work!

i think it's the best short summary of what my teacher said in the lecture
Thank you! I am an MA English Literature student, I didn’t understand anything from my professor but you? You are the best! Thank you!!
Thank you so much, I've been terrorized by the concept for the past 48 hours but now it seems less intimidating.
I called my professor a New Critic. He said "Them's fightin' words!"
+Black Lit. Black Hist. Laughed out loud at this comment!

Your professor of Literary Criticism is not deep, your answer might be acceptable..
Your videos are wonderful. Really easy to understand, thanks.

Thank you so much for this detailed description about new criticism.
all literary criticism should be conducted with bow ties. :) and also i love the word "locus."
Employment of New Criticism is not about the uncovering of textual meaning embedded in a text but the deeper understanding of literature in its transcendental aspects. Values are apprehended not through the explication of meaning but through the embodiment of its spirit in a disinterested fashion.
So it is more abstract than the simplified version explained in this video?
Thanks Tim Nance
Wonderful😍

Now I understand, Thank you. Can you do an explanation on Archetypal Criticism?
I've been reading William Empson and sad to see that no one on CZcams has done a good video on seven types of ambiguity
Great video.
Great stuff. Thanks, man!
what do you understand by tension? do you another video explaining the notion of tension with lot of examples? thank you
Tension is used to describe ideas in opposition, such as paradoxes, ironies, or other juxtaposed opposites. Look at a story like "The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings" by Marquez. Hi again Mr.Tim, just wanted to ask have u made any videos about Structuralism ?
had few problems with it, wish if I can ask u about them
would u make a video to explain the genre criticism
plz
excellent video

「あなたのコンテンツはとても感動的です」、
This is so good, thanks. Are there any good books that you can recommend on how to practically do this? (new criticism)
A fun, easy book to use on several types of criticism is Steven Lynn' s Text and Context. I reference it often.

is it the same thing as formalism?
They come from different places, but look very much the same and are often used interchangeably.

would you like to recommend me some books about new criticism? Thank you!

Thanks man
Thanks a bundle
it's only as deep as you want it to be

At some point it's like hearing a new piece of classical music. :p
hello Mr. Nance how can i contact you ??
🙏🏻🌸
Read closely, painstakingly, you make Value judgement, book has depth, look for tension complexity, book oppose other meaning, well unified, look for what makes the tension, what unifies the text as a whole,
what does this sentence mean?
'Liberal humanism -Theory before 'Theory'.
?
I'd be interested to know the context first.
Tim Nance I have been asked to explain the statement; Theory before 'theory'-Liberal humanism, by Peter Barry , taken from his book ' Beginning theory' . Well I have to do that by tomorrow and it is hell confusing.
... and it might make you cry.
