A Tribute to MotorWeek's Legendary Master Technician Pat Goss

- With the unexpected passing of Pat Goss recently, MotorWeek lost much more than a weekly contributor. Over 41 years and more than 2000 episodes, Pat became an icon. He was known as much for his no-nonsense maintenance advice as for the unmistakable resonance of his voice. Pat loved sharing what he knew, loved helping people solve their car-care problems for themselves, and enabling them to ask the right questions when seeking a repair professional. Pat will long be remembered, and cannot be replaced, so this will be the final newly produced Goss’ Garage segment you’ll see on MotorWeek, and fittingly, it’s a tribute and look back to the incomparable career of our friend and mentor, Pat Goss.
All of Pat's segment are archived here: www.motorweek.org/features/go...

MotorWeek did the right thing by retiring the segment. RIP Pat. You'll never be forgotten!! 😇🛠️
RIP - I didn’t know about his passing until this video. And I really enjoyed his work, which was not duplicated anywhere else on television. Groundbreaking and amazingly consistent presence.
Goss was great
Even though I knew of his passing originally, it still feels cruel and unreal. He kept ticking until he ticked no more :'(
Same here. I enjoyed watching him on tv. I’m sorry to hear of his passing. Reminds me of the time in my life when I bought my first brand new car, a Chevy IROC Z 28 back in 1985. May he RIP
And….I always learned something from him!
KPBS Channel 15 San Diego is where I remember watching Motor Week every Saturday. Then it disappeared. I found it on free "digital TV" a few years ago, but no longer have access to that media, either. Thanks CZcams algorithm for bringing it to me, again! R.I.P. Pat. Hope to see you in Paradise. Blessings.
I remember watching with my Dad as a kid in the mid 80's on PBS, and continued watching over the last 41yrs. I know it was in part due to Pat Goss that oil changes, and basic car maintenance became a DIY in my home. Thanks for the great memories Pat! Rest in Peace!
Likewise. I remember looking forward to motorweek every week on PBS and watching with my older brother each time. Pat really was great at giving advice on things that most people have questions on.
I started watching "MotorWeek" before I even learned how to drive, and I can't believe that Mr. Pat Goss has passed away. He will be greatly missed, and may he forever rest in peace.
May be nice to see a Retro Pat Goss segment every once in a while.Retro review have been popular and I am sure his would be also
Pat was a legend, RIP. I've watched this show since 1981. It's remarkable how John Davis has not lost the slightest bit of timbre from his voice either.
RIP PAT GOSS. one of the great ones. Thanks for getting me interested in doing it myself. You will be missed.
I remember a time when the wife and kids thought I was crazy regarding my zealous warnings about changing the oil. So, I had them watching Pat Goss one time to hear his common admonishment: "If you don't do any other maintenance on your car, make sure you change the oil regularly". RIP Mr. Goss!
When MotorWeek started, my dad and I would watch. It was our bonding moment. He would comment about Pat's segment. "You need to pay attention to this guy." or "He's right!" My father had passed a couple of decades ago. Even though we live in the age of the internet where information is a search away, I still look forward to Goss' Garage. Thank you, Mr. Goss.
Rest In Peace
Same here. I remember watching Motorweek with my Dad and always enjoyed Goss's segments. I didn't know he passed until i saw this on CZcams. I imagine he's in the giant garage in the sky teaching the angels the importance of proper vehicle maintenance.
I think my dad put it best when he heard this news, and simply said.... "Who the f*ck is Pat Goss?"

This is the first I’ve heard of Pats passing. MW was my show in the 80’s and 90’s and Pat was always a great resource to learn. May he RIP and my condolences to his Motorweek colleagues and family.
RIP- I have watched him my entire life. He really was an advocate for the consumer and seemed like a great guy !
RIP to an icon in the industry. I have many fond memories of watching MotorWeek on the weekend while growing up. Pat is one of the reasons why I've had a passion for cars for nearly my entire life.
I was born in 1981. I’ve been watching this show my whole life with my mother. When she passed I was sad. This made me sad also. It brought me back to the days I would watch motorweek with her. This show and PAT ARE LEGENDS. He will be truly missed.
I just learned of Pat's passing and give my condolences to his family, friends, and the Motorweek Staff. His segments were always informative and entertaining, despite his stern demeanor. The bit of humor he brought to his work was such a perfect fit for Motorweek's own bit of irreverance that has persisted for 40+ years. What a nice tribute. He will be missed.
Man, I loved Pat Goss! I remember writing a letter to him as a kid about car maintenance. My condolences to his close friends and family!! 🙏🏾
Amazing that even by 1981 Pat was already running a successful automotive repair business for over twenty years. He was basically around fixing late 50s era vehicles all the way to modern age 2020 era cars. Over 60 years of true experience. That's one long haul.
R.I.P. Mr. Goss. This was the first I learned of his passing. I was a big fan and he will be missed.
I'm from PG county Maryland and Mr Goss got me into the automotive field I met him as a kid I'm Seabrook MD at the garage. His voice never changed or his attitude
To add to the many great comments already here I basically “grew up” watching Pat on Saturday and Sunday mornings. I believe MotorWeek is one of the reasons I became a mechanic and eventually an engineer. Curiosity and the drive to teach eager people are some of the most valuable ideals I hold and if I were to bet I’d wager Pat did as well. R.I.P. Mr Goss.
Pat's voice was so calm and for a person like me with anxiety problems ! In the past two years, this part of the motorweek show was Epic to me !
Legends should never past away... long live his memories given on motorweek show !
MW has been a favorite for decades. From the days of antenna only viewing on PBS, to cable, satellite, and finally via streaming, MW has been in a class leader. Pat was always solid expert. Prayers for his family and MW family.
I always remember his feelings on additives 'well if you must prolong the agony, pour it in' 🤣🤣🤣. He was awesome and will be missed. What a guy.
RIP old friend. This is my 60'th year working on cars & I must say you were a driving force that catapulted me to my success. Your TV segments were always Insperational & I always admired your love for SNAP ON tools. Thank you for all you have given us over the years, TMP from N.J.
i met Pat in the 70's when he had the little Gulf gas station on Kenilworth Ave in Md.. I took my cars to him for years at his Lanham location. He was always honest, thorough, & informative. RIP Pat Goss. I take better care of my cars thx to you.
I knew Pat years ago when he had a Gulf station on Kenilworth Ave. I worked at the nearby ARCO station. I spun balanced his aluminum slotted wheels on his Blazer with our new electronic balancer. I used to give second opinions for him on PG county consumer affairs complaints. He was a good guy & will be missed. R.I.P. Pat
Where was this station?
@@GTVAlfaMan Riverdale, MD
@@TruthOverLies Is the Gulf station still there? Or has it been torn down?
@@klwthe3rd not sure, I think it is still there but not operating as a Gulf Gas station. Just a general car repair shop
@@TruthOverLies Did you know back then that he was propositions by Motorweek? Did his shop continue after he left?
Words cannot describe how much he meant to everyone.
He reminded me of a uncle who wanted to show us how to maintain our vehicle.
My condolences.
Rest In Peace Pat. Crazy, while us the 90s kids were watching solely cartoons, I oddly included Motorweek as part of my preferred shows. Pat became a staple of the show. Imagine a 6/7 year old kid getting educated on car maintenance and repair. LoL Surely did help as soon as I entered High school and somehow it all was second nature. Then later became a GM Journeyman tech for 12 years. Sending my condolences but also Thanks Pat for sharing/contributing to my education all the way from Maine to California. Godspeed my TV friend 🕊❤️✝️
Wind the clock back to the 80’s. Same story here. Now shade tree mechanic, restorer of vehicles and certified marine tech/dealer support technician.
My condolences to Pat’s family and all those he worked with and helped over the years.
Yep same here
Been watching the program for decades. Each person is an American ‘icon.’ His new assignment will be repairing the chariots in heaven.
I am a 50 yr gearhead and I have been watching MW since the 80s. Now is the time where your childhood TV personalities are fading to black. Sad times RIP Mr Goss!
Same here. Pat will be missed for sure!
If it wasn't for CZcams i would cry myself to sleep every night lol. Free to air TV is a train wreck compared to how amazing it was in the 80's.
“There is nothing more sad or glorious than generations changing hands.” RIP.
Hello MotorWeek family, I've been watching this show since I was a teenager and now I'm in my mid 50s. I've always enjoyed your show and looked forward to what I could learn new from Pat Goss. Incidentally, after I moved from NYC in 1990 and relocated to MD, I took my personal vehicles to Pat Goss' shop for regular routine maintenance. He will be missed. RIP Mr. Pat Goss ❤🩹
RIP Pat. I've watched many episodes of MotorWeek and always learned from Pat's sage advice.
I loved Pat's voice. I enjoyed watching his informative segments on MotorWeek. RIP, Mr. Goss.
“ As a kid watching Goss with my dad, He had me discover my love with cars more than I EVER knew!! RIP,Goss..☝🏽💯🕯

I just turned 40 years old and I remember once sending Pat a drawing I made as an 8 year old kid. To say he influenced me is an understatement. RIP Pat, your segments on Motorweek educated and inspired more lives than you may have given yourself credits for (assumption on my part because he seemed so humble and down to earth).
I have learned so much from his segments. And I have shared so many of his clips in the forums. Like you said, he was the Bob Villa of car care. He is the Godfather of today's DIY generation. Thanks, Pat. We will miss you.
I'm 41, and quite literally grew up with Pat. RIP, great sir!
Same here.
As did I and I'm 42. I'd always tune in to watch Motorweek partially because my family couldn't afford cable TV, but it was fun to watch even though I didn't really know what was being talked about. My dad definitely enjoyed the show, though. RIP Pat Goss.
Ditto! Rest in Peace Sir.
Same. 40 here
@@lstradamus at 41 years old myself we're now considered geriatric.👴
I loved watching Motor Week back in the 1980's and hearing his segments. He seemed like a mechanic you could trust. Thank you and rest in peace Sir.
RIP Pat Goss, I remember from age 5 and growing up. Every Sunday morning at 11am. I would turn on tv just to watch motor week. I learned so much from John & Pat. Thank you for giving us honest answers and letting everyone know who the shady scam shops and learn every details on every car. I’m sadden to learn that you are in Heaven. RIP sir. You have impacted lots of fans over these 41 years. I’m sending my prayers and condolences to you & your family, I know you are doing more mechanic work in peace in heaven🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I spent my teenage years watching Pat, continuing into my adulthood. Such a great teacher. Such a shame he’s gone. RIP.

O
even though i didn’t know much about pat, i still think he was the best technician to ever exist in our lives. May he Rest In Peace.
MotorWeek is one of the shows that fueled my interest in cars when I was a kid, and I still watch from time to time when I see it's on. Even when Pat was covering a topic I was already familiar with, I still paid attention. His advice was always straight forward, and easy to follow. Informative, but never sounded like he was talking down to the audience. Pat Goss will be missed.
Well said. He is for sure reading our comments up in the big shop on the sky.
Pat was the man when I was growing up with cars in the early 80's. Thanks for sharing your wisdom with so many. You will be missed. RIP and God bless.
Rip Pat Goss. I love his segments on the show he explained everything in detail so even people like me could understand. Wow he's going to be missed.
What a wonderful tribute. Thanks Pat. And really cool to see Craig!
Well said Mr Tofer. He is for sure reading our comments in the big shop in the sky.
With all of the build-up, I was hoping that this was going to be an entire half-hour/hour-long tribute show with clips, interviews, Fun Facts, what he drove, outtakes/bloopers, etc., but I loved seeing this, anyway.
RIP Pat Goss. Thank you for your huge contribution to the automotive maintenance industry.
he will be missed... I enjoyed watching him when I was a kid. thanks for the memories and training
He will be missed, rest easy Pat. He taught me so much about car care. Thank you
My dad had me watch Mr. Goss’s segments regularly as we watched Motorweek together as a family. Came in handy as I started working on my own pickup truck later in life. He will definitely be missed.
I grew up watching Pat in the 80s until today he will be missed, rest in peace.
I was shocked and saddened to hear of Pat’s passing.
My deepest condolences to his family and all of you that
worked with him.
RIP Pat Goss
A good, honest person. Probably the first mechanic I've seen on video.
John nails what I was thinking back in 1981....was looking for This Old House on Ch 2 in Boston...not sure if I was early or late that Saturday...but this show comes on called "Motorweek". Hmm...interesting. Been a viewer since. Because of Pat Goss (the Norm Abram of Automotive)...I'm a very knowledgeable person on things automotive, to the point where I went into being an engineer...Systems Engineer, not automotive tech, but still, like "This Old House" this side of cars intrigued me. Pat only fueled that idea. I'll miss his honest reviews and his wealth of knowledge. Thanks for sharing the tribute Motorweek team! Look forward to what comes next as I'm still going to be watching.
RIP Pat .. my dad watched Motorweek and I was just a kid sitting with him .. lost him back in 97 but I still watch in hopes my dad is sitting next to me in the sofa in spirit .. sometimes I cry as i watch .. but Pat is a part of my childhood and is a part of my memories of my dad .. rest well sir
I am 56 years old and I grew up watching him teach us how to maintain our vehicles properly. I accredit my diligent attention to vehicular maintenance to Pat and MotorWeek. I bet his advice has saved me a lot of money over the years. I also know following his advice has made the difference to me arriving to my destination, as opposed to being stranded. I want to thank you Pat Goss.
Grew up watching Pat, from the beginning in '81 to today, I learned A LOT from the man, thank you Pat, you will not be forgotten for sure.
Ditto!
Man this hit hard. Watched him on MW since ‘97 and learned an immeasurable amount. RIP
After moving a few years ago I no longer can see Motorweek but I loved the show since the early days. Pat's segment was always very informative, even thought it was mostly geared to novices. That being said he was always a joy and seemed like a very nice, good person. RIP sir! & God Speed!
I grew up with Pat!!!! from Junior high and before that because I was a PBS and NPR child. I was watching him way after college and I was VHS recording his segments for more than 5 years. When I came to the CZcams sight today I always check for Pat's segment first then was shocked that he was no longer with us. I need to sit down and recover from this one. Pat I will sorely miss you. God bless you Pat!!!
Decades of great MW. The days when you had to make time to watch MW at a set time. It’s something to look forward to
Such a big loss. Spent my teenage years learning from Pat. My condolences to Pat’s family and the Motorweek family.
Aw, damn. RIP Pat Goss. I grew up watching you and you've made an impact!
I didn’t care for his segments, but now I will miss him. RIP Mr Goss
RIP Pat Goss and condolences to his family and loved ones. 🙏
I’m at a loss for words. I’ve been watching MW since I was a kid. Just learned of him passing when this video came up on my YT feed. 🪦 to the great Pat Goss. You definitely left your imprint here on earth. Blessings. Prayers to your family
RIP to an honest man.
Much like the instructors / stars of This Old House, we would love to know more about this good man.
I found out today about Pat's passing. My younger brother and I had a time when we had ready access to MotorWeek, and Pat Goss' segment were among the more enjoyable and educational.
He will be missed. My condolences to his family and the team at MotorWeek.
He was a wonderful presenter. Sorry to learn of his passing. I remember watching him from my dorm room, when I should have been studying in the library. He was much more interesting than my college studies. Good man. May he be at peace.
RIP to Pat Goss, I love this show, i am from Maryland and I have been watching the show since i was a kid and learned a lot. I became a automotive instructor and my classroom is molded to how Pat Goss explains repairs about cars. I always look forward to a episode of motorweek because I know I am going to learn something from this guy, I always wanted to write to him but i was young and didn’t know what to say to him. It’s a shame, my deepest condolences goes out to his family. I will forever remember him as my first Automotive Instructor again RIP to a great one.
Loved watching Motorweek every Saturday morning, from it beginning. R.I.P. Pat Goss. I've learnt a lot from him. One that still stands out, don't test drive a car on a rainy day, especially a used one.
I just found out about Pat Goss. RIP Pat and thank you for your knowledge and honesty.
I grew up watching Pat Goss on MotorWeek and learned a lot from him. R.I.P.
I'm 43 and I can say without a doubt that motorweek has been a staple in my life. Since a kid watching on pbs and never missing it. It feels like a heroe was lost. Thanks for the years of advice which I still pass on to new car enthusiast. Pat was my first mechanics shop teacher in a way.. thanks Pat fly high my friend.
Pat Goss was the best! I've learned so much from him over the years. RIP Pat.
Rest In Peace, Mr. Pat Goss
Thank You for Being A Great Friend & An True Inspiration to Us!
Farewell Pat, My Good Friend.

I'm saddened to hear of Pat Goss' passing. I've been watching Motor Week since I was little, and through it all Pat was a constant source of no-hype, no-nonsense maintenance advice for viewers. He always sought to make care care accessible to all, and his warm, deep voice was most comforting. I never met Pat, but in a way, I feel like I've known him for decades. My most sincere condolences to Pat's family and friends - he will, indeed, never be forgotten.
Awesome tribute, I remember seeing him on MW when I was a kid in the 80's. RIP.
Motorweek used to be a thing back than....now days you can watch tons of review on youtube ...soo much has changed!
RIP!
Pat was my favorite segment of MW. Many times, I’d only watch his. I will miss him, greatly. Gods speed.
Sad to hear about Pat. I grew up with Motorweek in the 90’s and 2000’s and learned a lot of valuable tidbits about car care from him. I will miss seeing his segments and will remember them fondly. Rest easy.
Loved Pat! I always looked forward to his segments on on the show. His advice was sound and oh what a voice for TV. Great guy.
Wow! So sad. I watched the first 15 or so years religiously! I always looked forward to his no nonsense advice. Rest thee well.
RIP Pat! Always loved his segments and this series that inspired my love of cars and diy.
Truly a great loss for all of us. Last month, I was talking to one of my patients about cars. He was shocked when I told him Pat had died just the week before. His reaction was likely the reaction many of us had.
Godspeed Pat. I have many great memories of watching Pat and the whole team every Sunday on my local PBS channel. Prayers to the Motorweek family as they mourn his loss.
Saturday mornings on PBS. Our start to the weekend back in the day, never missed an episode!
Before there was CZcams, there was Pat Goss. He taught us so much. RIP,sir.
I CAN'T BELIEVE IT ,,, HOW TIME FLIES. IT FELT LIKE JUST YESTERDAY I SAW HIM ON MOTORWEEK, THAT WAS ONE SHOW I LOOKED FORWARD TO EVERY SATURDAY BECAUSE OF HIS SEGMENT . I AM AN AUTOMOTIVE DIAGNOSTIC TECH NOW AND I CAN SAY THAT THAT WAS THE FIRST SHOW I EVEN SAW AN AUTOMOTIVE OSCILLOSCOPE USED AND EXPLAINED ON HOW IT WORKED . RIP MISTER GOSS.
I've watched Motorweek and Pat since I was a kid. His segment is still one of my favorites on CZcams. He'll definitely be missed.
Me tooooooooooooooooooooooo, Me toooooooooooo. I was watching in elementary school.
Oh what a shame, Pat was, is, always will be a legend. I first came across the show on the very early 90s and loved his segments. Always had good information for us.
RIP Pat.
My mom & I always enjoyed watching Motorweek and she’d always say “Man he has a deep voice!” We learned a lot of valuable information. May not seem like a big deal but Saturday afternoons sitting with mom watching Motorweek was always comforting. I lost mom in September on 2021. Learning about of the passing of Pat Goss hit my heart. He was a regular part of our Saturdays. He’ll definitely be missed.
Now mom can hear his voice in person! ❤️
@jmarcguy What a wonderful thought. Thank you. I remember watching with my daughters in the 1980's. We would watch each others' favorite shows together: Reading Rainbow, This Old House, Nova, Mr. Roger's Neighborhood, etc. I am also grieving so many losses now, and join you in trusting in a Better Place, free of sorrow, tears, sickness and injustice. Blessings.
Here in Houston, it's a Sunday 11 am ritual for years watching Motorweek.
Even Mr. Goss couldn't fix mortality. RIP, old friend. Thanks for all the useful advice.
Damn what a loss.😢
Pat taught me a lot from a young age to adulthood.
RIP Pat, he was always there to help others with their automotive needs.
I truly feel honored he even took the time to personally reply to one of my questions on one of the videos from his CZcams channel.
Pat did love his trade. He responded quickly to an email i sent to him last year. This was a terrific tribute from John and the staff at Motorweek. HIs family should be proud!!!!
R.I.P Mr Goss, thank you for being a part of my life growing up, Motor week debuted when I was 5 years old and I watched it every Saturday. It has always been one of my Favorite shows growing up, especially having my Dad, 3 of my Uncles and my Grandfather all being mechanics in the Family. Beautiful tribute. I will always remember Pat's garage as a child. I grew up wanting to learn about cars thanks to him
As a young avid Motor Week viewer I had the opportunity to take a lot of Pat’s advice and knowledge from the show and apply it to my vehicles… Thanks Pat, Rest In Paradise…
