We just got back from a month touring Egypt. The history was phenomenal, but the experience wasn’t.
First and foremost, the amount of trash and garbage everywhere is shocking. The streets and sidewalks of Cairo are covered in trash. Even in the middle of nowhere such as on a desert tour, you’ll see garbage everywhere. We learned very quickly to tilt our cameras up to avoid any shots of the ground.
But what was worse were the people of Egypt. With little to no industry tourism generates a lot of money, so tourists are flooded from all sides with scams and merchants peddling junk made in China. And they’re very aggressive about it, not taking “no” for an answer. Every day I had to push someone away who was being too aggressive and grabbing us.
Overall, definitely visit Egypt but reserve private transportation and private guides for your stay. And whatever you do, do NOT interact with the locals as nothing is free. Not even a picture. No one does anything as a courtesy in Egypt. Everyone expects a tip for anything.
And be prepared to be grabbed and accosted by people wherever you go. They all want money and will say/do anything to get you you pay them.
