It's neoliberalism which has replaced conservatism in most conservative parties since the mid 1980s. Growth and profit are all that matters. If institutions and tradition are a barrier in any way they must be binned.

Funny questions …the “why” might be answered with “corruption” and everything else is that Progressive conservatives are generally positive about change, but in the form of cautious and gradual change while preserving social and political traditions.
Historically seen the konservatives brought the most stabil and sustainable progress.

Understanding each other is what's important. Dismissive generalizations do not help us. Not all conservatives are the same. Iam said it but he's not listening.

Brilliant as always. I love the brakes vs. gas dichotomy. And now, with the deadlock between Dem & GOP, the brakes and gas are being applied together. Sticking with the car analogy, this means we're headed for a crash. And it sure feels like it.

I think you could make the same “self-immolation” point about liberals, though too. During the 2020 protests, we had 3 months+ of “peaceful protests” which resulted in billions $ in damage- federal buildings, police stations, businesses being set on fire-in the name of “institutional distrust”. Since then, in liberal circles, a death spiral of “not being progressive enough” has emerged, causing implosive divides- (i.e. “defund the police/ACAB”, Gaza, gender/sex issues, etc) and I suspect it will only get exponentially worse. They can’t keep up with their own “progressive” rate of acceleration.

The rioting was all on Trump's watch. I don't think it's coincidental that there were race-riots when there was a racist President in office.

its people lashing out because the politicians no longer represent public interest. If those in power are untouchable then its only natural to start going after those who enforce the rules set by the powerful.
you're certainly right though, its like an onion with a rotten core: the public wants change and to cut out the politicians but they're so entrench in the system people feel compelled to "peel every layer of the onion" and destroy anything that resembles the same rot. A lot of innocent people are going to get hurt and killed, but many of these people feel that there is no longer any other way.
Jan 6 was the republican attempt at it, and now the liberals are making their attempt. There are political differences but it hits all the same notes if you look closely.

I used to see politics as a pendulum of surging social innovation and conservatism was the periodic checks and balances, and for a few decades I've rejected that model because it doesn't look like a casual swing back and forth...a pendulum shouldn't be so rigid, erratic, and desperate!
Harari's gas-and-brake metaphor works good too...how are we driving? Do we look (and sound) like someone learning to drive a car with a manual transmission, with no instructor?

Liberal or conservative shouldn't matter in a free country any more than Christians, Jews, Buddhists and Muslims, etc. existing. Live and let live in a free market with free people and free association. It works so much better than forced unity by either a liberal or a conservative. Each can choose what they want without having to be forced by others with different tastes?
