@@andro_system Project Cars 2 on Steam but they dont have every classic track, just a few, and not all the cars, like Assetto , but the graphics and handling are much better.

I had this game and loved it. I remember reading the manual and finding out that each wheel had its own physics model.
This is not a game, this is a real simulation.

I'm just glad I can actually see the side mirrors on a single screen in these cars as opposed to the modern cars :P
this was the second game i ever worked on... i made all of the cars for gpl except for the lotus. it was a monumental task to make them since we were using bsp trees for the graphics. it was also right around the time the first gpu game out so we made it for computer with and without gpus. i'd model the cars first in lightwave, then export piece by piece into a proprietary text format and futz with the drawing order for ages then it would be compiled in a makefile. texturing was very time consuming, although we had some very talented 2d artists to make the textures for the cars.

I played this game when it first came out and I was in 5th grade, I had no idea what it was beyond racing. I didn't realize how special it was until I got into F1 over the past few years, it makes me wish I could still play it.
I bought this when it came out, was way ahead of the hardware of its day. Luckily I was head of a CGI dept so I could request Voodoo GFX cards for my staff & we could race over LAN. Amazing times, still the best racing sim of all time bar none.

100% agreed. GPL was best ever made formula1 simulator and considering the year of release makes this game absolutely stunning. Still has very competitive physics.

reinstalling this today, its been maybe 3 years since ive played last, using a controller for now, but i do remember it being more than possible in pretty much every game papyrus released, even nascar racing 2003 was fun

I think Papyrus made a couple of big mistakes when they released this. Firstly the default car is the glamorous Lotus, which will attract most new players. But it's the most difficult car to drive. Also the default car setups are pretty bad. Combine a hard to drive car with bad setups and you'll get lots of frustration from new players! I imagine a good proportion of them gave up pretty soon after spinning off the track constantly. But if you're patient, are willing to read the manual and willing to drive the less glamourous cars you've begun apprenticeship for the best f1 simulation.
Buyed and played it with a Joystick (!) when it came out. I hated it, because it was so difficult but the Vanilla Ferrari sounded so AWESOME! Downloaded all the mods and stuff and played it until 2004 I think. Still one of my all time Top 5 gaming experiences.
Lived GPL for years. Fantastic, still is.

The old Papyrus games was incredible at the time, I loved GPL and Nascar 4 to death.

I have several racing sims and games, but the only one I play regularly is GPL (mainly for time -- if I had more free time I'd do more with NR2003, GTR2, and AC, but GPL is the best).

After all these years I still have this on my hard drive. Fully modded at times it looks like your driving in an oil painting, its so good. I miss the league racing most of all.
I still attack my gplrank every once in a while but I'm hopelessly slow now.
This and nr2003 are a must have sim.

Was using it last night. It's a great sim but obviously 25 years old so the graphics can't hold up against the newer Sims.
I have it but can't play it on MAC. Started out with Windows '98 and GPL was the first game I bought. All my games were racing games. I don't have time anymore.

I don't disagree but the only game that comes close and for some beats it is any of the Geoff Crammond Grand Prix games. I sunk more hours into Grand Prix Legends but only because Microprose ruined what Geoff had created.
I have played GPL since release off and on, but after a long hiatus from sim racing and coming back, the cars drive easier in GPL now it seems. Is it just me? Handling is far superior now?

Yes. I had the Wingman Force Force wheel. A great wheel but it's not compatible with Windows 10.

It is definitely the best. The realism is the key. I hate games where pixel perfect cars are driven by full arcade logic. A good f1 game mustbe scary. The only game comparable to this in my opinion is the original AssettoCorsa. Also not a nice game but its physics is extremely good. (It is more compley for sure due the many differend cars/driverains but GPL and AC are the gold standard for me. (Also not bad the PC2 hence it has serious bugs its physics engine and tire simulation are pretty good but not all cars are on the same level..

Short Asnwer, NO. Long Answer, It is not the bet F1 game ever since it is NOT a game. It is the first and (up to 2024) the best auto racing simulator ever.

The graphics gets an upgrade if you use the community installer.

There was a mod released in 2004 that updated the 3d models, cockpits and engine sounds of the cars.
It's worth pointing out here, that the game was notoriously difficult to run on PCs in 1998- especially on those without a 3D accelerator.

yes to everything, but also GPL has the best AI ever created for a racing SIM: cars don't constantly hit you, they drive around you like in a real race... and that's great if you want to finish a race
Why would you say that F1 2020 is better than F1 2021?
"The best" Is very subjective, specially coming from someone who´s channel only shows "simcade" racing games.
only games as nascar 2004, and isimracing get the forcefeedback right aswell as GPL.. so that why I enjoy it. you can feel the shift in balance of the car thru the wheel. New racing games are just numb.. you cant feel anything.
