  • All thoughts on this movie are welcome!
As I am unsure what to think of this movie, lol.
I'm not sure what the takeaway was, and I didn't like how it ended, but I chose to edit and upload it anyway b/c I'm interested in ppl's thoughts on this movie.
Please share your thoughts, if you're so inclined. 🙂
The romance aspect was endearing and a little exciting (and Jody Foster and Richard Gere were dynamic), but the story itself felt like there was just too many loopholes.
Even if someone spent years with someone hearing their life story, you wouldn't be able to recognize so many ppl's faces (so he not only heard the life story with an in depth description of ppl, but an in depth description of everyone's facial structures? 😄 ).
I could go on but I'll stop there, lol.
I did like the score though. It was beautiful, with some riveting suspense segments I found enthralling.
And there were some shots and sequences that stuck out to me (which always thrills me, even if I didn't like the movie as a whole).
    So props to all that.

*I was featured in the movie SOMMERSBY. I worked the entire length of the film. It was filmed April, May and June in Hidden Valley, Virginia. Your confusion is explained here: Richard Gere was NOT Jack Sommersby. He pretended to be. His real name was Horace Townsend, a man who spent time in prison with the real Jack Sommersby, who, ironically could have passed for his twin brother. In short, he chose to die as Jack Sommersby rather than be his true self; a despicable man who wanted to erase his past life. He went to the greatest length person can go through to prove who they really are at heart, not as a person ruled by his dark past life.*

Speaking of being left speechless, but in a good way, I recently watched for the first time David Lean's _Brief Encounter._ The remarkable confluence of Lean's direction, Noel Coward's screenplay, and Celia Johnson's brilliantly understated performance left me breathless by the end.
Of course, you might not like it as it's an adaptation of Coward's one-act play _Still Life,_

Aww I love that! It left you breathless at the end, that sounds incredible.
It doesn't matter if I'd like it or not, what matters is you liked it, and it moved you. And I love that. :)

    *SPOILERS*
2:20 all that I remember about the movie is that Richard Gere's character was kinda a charming rogue criminal that pretended to be the long lost husband, and he sacrifices himself (kinda) to free the plantation slaves. I only saw it once so it couldn't have been that great.

38:03 I didn't like the movie either. Not because of the themes in the movie, but because there was no chemistry whatsoever between Richard Gere and Jodie Foster.

The original French film, _The Return of Martin Guerre_ (1982) is far superior. The story is based on an actual, 16th century court proceeding.
The original film, starring Gerard Depardieu as Martin Guerre, won many Cesar Awards, as well as Best Foreign Film from the National Board of Review and Best Actor from the National Board of Film Critics.
The Wikipedia article gives a good precis of the case. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Guerre

Interesting. Thanks for the wiki link, I checked it out. That's a crazy story, I can see why they made movies based off of it.
