  • The Race of the Saints takes place every year in only two places in the world: Gubbio, Italy and Jessup, PA. Sean's team is St. George, so the video is about them. If you are a ceraioli di San Giorgio and would like a higher quality copy, please contact me.
FYI- The saints are St. Ubaldo (yellow), St. George (blue) and St. Anthony (black). The platforms weigh about 500 pounds. We carry the platforms in teams of ten, and switch on a dead run. It is very dangerous, so please do not attempt to do this at home. We are professionals.
    Viva San Giorgio!

We do carry the candles in Jessup- my great grandmother came from Perugia. Most of our town's grandparents came from Gubbio, Perugia, & other towns in Nochero Umbria! Thank you for your comments! I hope you like the video and I hope to visit Gubbio and see the ceri there. Thanks!

No disrespect intended, paisan. We learned the importance of the tradition from Gubbio, and we have all the love and respect in the world for the old ways. We celebrate in our own way, but it's the same at heart.

I think I understand: The festa is on 15 Maggio in Gubbio, but we have it on Memorial Day weekend here so that many people from Jessup can go to Gubbio for the festa. Memorial Day is usually about two weeks after the Gubbio festa. It is the same festival, though.

My Italian is very poor, but my town of Jessup has many immigrants from Gubbio and Perugia, from Umbria. My great-grandmother came from Perugia. We run to honor them and their home. Many people from Jessup, PA, USA are in Gubbio now, waiting for the original race. Thank you for watching my video!

Immigrants from Gubbio and Perugia (I don't know exactly who) brought the statues and the tradition of the ceri to Jessup in 1911. They were very poor, but somehow they did it. Jessup was part of the coal mining communities of Pennsylvania, so they were hardworking people who loved their culture. I'm grateful they did! My Nona was from Perugia - Feliceta Ferri - her mother's family were the Marinangeli - Where are you from?

There is no winner in Jessup either. I may have presented it in an unclear manner. The celebration at the end is only that the race is finished, and the difficult course is accomplished. My family runs with San Giorgio, so I focussed on them. The voices in the background speak of being part of 800 years of history and a great family of tradition. Thank you for your feedback.

I do not claim that we invented it, only that our fathers brought the candles to America, so we carry them. I understand that you don't like the rock music, and to be honest, I would probably never put that music under pictures of the race in Gubbio. It's different. But for us, the music means something different. No disrespect intended.

Yeah, they invented the race 800 years ago in Italy so we could drink in Jessup. Good one, chuck. I'll be sure to tell the 20,000 people who show up again this year that you think they're actually not having a good time. But by all means, don't come. If you do, be sure to introduce yourself.
