This 8 year old kid loved the original TMNT on the NES. It was a great game that was challenging and actually required strategy trying to manage all four turtles. The swimming level wasn't hard to me, so I never understood why so many people couldn't get past it.

@@JB-tp6uj THIS. TMNT 1 on Nes was enjoyable for what it was. I think that the water level may have been off-putting for some folks, but the real nuisance for others was probably the third level where you have the Turtle Van on the overworld. Which isn't really that bad, especially if you did exactly what Nintendo Power told you to way back then and got each Turtle loaded up with 99 Scrolls (which let's be real, that was a lot of grinding). Of course, if you ain't have that issue of NP...yeah, I can see how level 3 would be a nightmare.
If anything, the most annoying level has to be the Technodrome (the sixth & last level). Plenty of new and previously unseen enemies that you need Donatello for...or you could just start rippin' off Scrolls - between these clowns and the enemies in the fifth level, there was a reason NP said to get 99 Scrolls for errybody during level 3...
But all that madness in level 6, and the Shredder fight is a joke. Makes the fight against the Giant Mouser in level 4 even MORE of a joke.

TMNT Arcade was one of my favorite NES games as a kid. I played it all the time. Never even tried the original arcade version until many years later so for me the console was definitive. I also loved the sequel, Manhattan Project. They still stand as the most fun sidescrolling beat em ups, in my opinion.

Awesome video. Very Nostalgic, which I love. I bought Ninja Turtles Battle Nexus on PS2 years ago just to be able to play the Arcade port of TMNT. I fondly remember Many trips to Chucke E. Cheese in 1990-1991 and the main game my cousins and I played was TMNT. We would usually spend about $5.00 in quarters (a piece) to beat the game. The remaining time spent there was used to watch my drunk uncle throw the ski balls in to the holes instead of rolling them up the ramp. Great memories that I cherish. TMNT the arcade game remains a True classic and will always be one of my favorites. 👊

TMNT Arcade is still one of my favorite arcade games of all time. I could not wait for the NES version.
A seemingly little-known fact is that the July/August 1990 issue of Nintendo Power featured screenshots of a prototype for the NES game, and I have scoured the internet for info about it but I’ve had no luck. Those screenshots show some different sprites not in the finished game, including a larger and more detailed sprite of Raph doing a move, and Rocksteady clad in yellow.

The NES port of the TMNT arcade game was my first experience with it as I did not get a chance to play the actual game cabinet in an arcade. This misfortune allowed me to enjoy the inferior NES version because I had no reference to compare it to. Years later I finally played the arcade version when I got the Cowabunga collection for PS4. If 11-year-old me had played it back in the day he would not have been pleased with the NES port lol. Ignorance is indeed bliss.

Having grown up back then, loved the arcade version, but also the NES port. No one was expecting perfect arcade 1:1 experience, but were still amazed how much of the feel of the arcade still made it into the NES port. It wasn't for us a matter of what was superior or inferior, but the fact that we had a playable home port that held up to the Game play had in the arcade.
Modern gamers are a bit spoiled, now that the current consoles surpass anything the arcade games could do, which has pretty well killed much of the arcade industry, with the few still operating being more like museums. Save for the random Chuck E Cheese pizza or local pizza parlor, even places like Pizza Hut that got so much advertisement out of the arcade game rarely have any arcade games, let alone a sit in area any more.

"Back in my day, we used to have real gameplay. We didn't have of this fancy 3D stuff!"
Gameplay took a back seat as games became more like interactive movies. Too much importance was put into flashy realistic 3D graphics and spectacular action set pieces. Most modern video game trailers show only cut scene footage. Gameplay is no longer a priority. Complete a task, watch a cinematic cut scene. Rense and repeat.
There used to be a separation from game play and cinematic cut scenes. Now they just flow seamlessly together which is why you feel like you are playing an interactive movie instead of a video game.

The original NES came out in May of 1989, the arcade came out 5 months after in October. The NES release came out in 1990, and the titled it TMNT II: The Arcade Game so it would not be confused with the original first TMNT NES game. It makes more sense if you were a gamer in the 1980's and lived the timeline. That said, for a good many gamers at that time, the original NES game was a favorite, and both considered famous or notorious for its difficulty. It had a lot more dimensions to it than just being a beat 'em up, and thus appealed to those that liked the challenges it provided. It's a different type of game, and there's people that love them both.

Hyperstone Heist was great and Turtles in Time is a classic. To be honest though ive always liked the Arcade Game better than even TiT. Also, ya - games were actually ‘just’ as expensive as they are nowadays. Sega Master System games were among the priciest (like… some were $80-90 cartridges!)…
OH… also, along with Metal Gear, and a few other games, I remember how curious it was that this was released under Ultra Games, vice, Konami, but I think that there’s some interesting history with that, as well (trade related, I think… There was some limit on how many games could be sold in the US by overseas companies; this was how Konami got around that… or something like that… I need to get my story straight there… 😅 )… dang. I love the arcade game, but the original TMNT for the NES was not a POS. It was different, plus it came out in May of 1989, so 5 months before the arcade, which came out in October of 1989. The port of the arcade to the NES was in 1990.
The original NES game was more of a side scroller adventure, rather than a beat 'en up. So I'd say it's more fair to say it's a different sort of game play experience that can be fun, as long as you're not expecting it to be the arcade port and are into into a side scrolling adventure.
As for an RPG featuring everybody's favorite turtles, I'm sure there's some of us that would have loved it. I'm sure there's plenty of crossover from people who also like Final Fantasy. That again would just be something that appeals to a different audience, or at least someone that isn't expecting it to be the arcade port.

The CPC port was one of my faves. So colourful and chunky. Strange thing about it is that the disks DID contain an entire soundtrack to the game but for some reason the game doesn't activate it. Perhaps it slowed down the game? Dunno. But I have played the music by it's own in the background while playing the CPC port to try get how it should have been if the music was activated. :) There were aspects of it I preferred over the NES in some ways even if the game wasn't as smooth (and was slower to load obviously cassette/disk vs cartridge).
Also that CPC port was way better than the C64 version which had less characters and was 1 player only. :O
