The Sonic and Knuckles fight in "Labyrinth Zone" had me slacked jawed in the cinema. The action scenes were so well done. Especially loved the callback to the intro of Sonic 3 when Knuckles punched the Master Emerald out of Eggman.
@@johndeer4936 I don't see at all how it was even barely like hydro city, because the only instance of water I seen in their was the water it was already under, and the water sonic slid down from, which is a direct reference to the beginning of labyrinth zone
That final fight was just purely amazing. When Sonic was charging up behind the waterfall I got goosebumps, and the bounce attack. Ended me. I loved this movie so much.
I can't lie the fact that the Chaos Emeralds merged into one to become the master emerald kind of makes more since than the ones in the games. Though it seems they are separate entities by the end of it, but atleast there is a connection with the emeralds themselves first.
I know when you get into sonic lore by playing or watching a show its like you have these 7 powerful emeralds than a giant one thats infinitely more/not powerful at the same time outside of adventure titles
Same, it was the only scene the whole cinema was laughing at, in contrast with kids only paying attention to the scenes where the game characters played a part and other adults during the human scenes. Both groups were interested the most during the ending though.
I agree. She seemed like an annoying relative in the first one with some funny lines, but in this one I was rooting for her the whole way. Loved her little saga lol
I think a lot of the guys criticising that part of the movie aren't the target for it. I went to the movie with a married woman with kids and she LOVED that part. Maybe her favourite part and she's also a Sonic fan. It's a family movie. There have to be parts for everyone. I laughed pretty hard when Rachel stepped off the golf cart away from the explosion.
one of my favorite jokes in the movie is robotnik spying on sonic and tom's texts (I think? I don't remember exactly) and knuckles just repeating them super seriously, and he sees that one of them is typing and he just says "dot dot dot dot dot dot dot dot"
I have a few ideas in defence of the wedding scene. Trying to think of what they wanted to say narratively with it, first of all it introduces G. U. N. as an SCP kind of organization, started exclusively to contain Sonic and any other aliens. Also, they're a replacement to what Eggman was doing for the military. It was also a nice way to convey how Tails works as a character, even knocked unconscious, he indirectly saves himself through the gadgets he brought with him, so he's about empowering others rather than himself. I also see this scene as a sample for the kind of movies that Paramount wants to do. There's a comedy action movie by them that's coming out soon that this wedding scene helped convince me to watch. I want to support the brand if they have more fun movies.
About Tails introducing himself indirectly, I also thought exactly the same, and I'm surprised, as you are the only one that I saw to point out what I thought. Also, I think they made Randall reveal against G.U.N so he can help Sonic, Tails and Knuckles on the next film with Shadow. He might know about the project Shadow and tell all the information.
Very good points, and I generally think the same, just that the scene definitely could have been cut back by a few minutes and be a bit faster paced. I think the pacing is primarily the biggest thing here as it felt surprisingly slow and drawn out compared to a lot of other stuff in the movie. So like not fundementally bad, just kinda overstaying its welcome a bit. And yeah a great introduction to like Tails' gadgets and GUN, just something which I feel like could perhaps have been trimmed down. Like I think a good comparison to how this could've been like with a faster pace would be the Rocket VS Scavengers in the woods scene from Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Like a more fast paced, wacky gadget heavy fight back scene.
@@castome7pi you know, I’m starting to think that GUN could become the main antagonistic faction of the third movie, since their most likely responsible for Shadow alongside Gerald Robotnik. And if you think about it, the commander (Olive Garden Guy) is indirectly responsible for Robotnik’s obsession with Sonic as it was him suggesting that Robotnik could handle it that led to him going almost completely insane, and why would he choose Robotnik of all people? Is it because he was involved with the Robotniks and he was responsible for Gerald’s demise? That’s why I think G.U.N will be the real villains of the third movie.
I disagree with the wedding criticism. Tom and Maddie are part of the movie franchise so they both deserve their fair share of screen time imo. Plus the Wedding scene wasn't that bad
i didn't hate it, I think its just that it went on for a bit far too long, cut it down for 5 minutes, it also glosses over sonic being concerned about Tails as well which I think is the heart of the movie. and it DOES foreshadow the tornado plane at least.
You’re not wrong the actors do deserve screen time, (not to mention in a interview they did say that they had fun being there) but after how well these sonic characters have so much fun personality bouncing off each other the humans are unneeded.
Thing is. Tom Holkenberg has shown he is an incredibly talented composer. With both the Snyder Cut and GvK last year proving that. So hopefully for the next film paramount let's him go all out
The labyrinth fight was brutal and awesome felt like an anime honestly also having the master emerald be split from chaos emeralds to make it more game accurate was a good choice
This was such a great film. The only thing I would ask for (selfishly) is even more fan service. Maybe a song from the games? Because I'm just as greedy as any Sonic fan who has stuck with this franchise for 30 years. I understand that this film is made for a wider audience and isn't quite as focused on the relatively small minority of 30-somethings that came to see it. But, seeing as this is a Sonic property, I'm sure someone out there is already working on remixing iconic scenes with the old music. Only a matter of time before the snowboarding sequence is dubbed over with Ice Cap Zone music.
This film and I’m guessing the next one is to sonic fans, like no way home was to spiderman fans. Both were good plots that were elevated by the clear respect they had for the fans and material. I’m genuinely shocked they hid any mentions of super sonic from the trailer bc that came as a great part of the film. Going into it I didn’t expect super sonic, but as we learned more and got closer, my hype started to build
I could see Crush 40 be a part of the 3rd movie ESPECIALLY since shadow is gonna be in it. I was hoping sonic 3 was gonna be about sonic adventure 2 and so far it seems like that may end up being the case.
I've been dying to discuss this movie online, but don't wanna post on Twitter etc at risk of spoiling since it's only now releasing in US - but yeah, I'm glad you said it cos many people are just ignoring it: Music. After the announcement trailer and first proper trailer featured Emerald Hill music, I sat excitedly through the whole film waiting for it... Just to get nothing. There was somehow less Sonic music in this film than the first one, and that's excluding the Green Hill ringtone, since it's literally just used for that gag. Where-as Sonic 1 had Friends at the start, and the Green Hill piano version at the end. I was so excited for an Emerald Hill remix, even for the title screen, and we didn't even get it there. As long as the quality of Movie 3 is like this one, though, I'll be happy. Music would simply be my one request to improve it in the 3rd one. Especially, if we're adapting SA2, incorporating Live and Learn. Not having Crush 40 in Sonic 2 after fans were so clear they wanted to hear them, even something original, just seems foolish. But you can't NOT have Live and Learn if the two golden boys end up in space fighting the Biolizard. I'll literally consider it a near perfect movie if I get that, nothing brings more hype for that scenario.
I couldn’t agree with you more. I was disappointed and upset that the movie hardly used any sonic music other than a reference or Easter egg. But I do hope that the do bring in the angst music for shadow when he makes an appearance and we definitely need live and learn. I’ll even be ok if it’s orchestrated with no lyrics, just get it in the movie.
I feel like them using the drowning theme in the score when Sonic is about to drown should count but I'll admit I did want more. I can see why they didn't go all the way, since it can come off as distracting/pandering to fans and some people already whined that a lot of the references felt that way. Like while I wanted Hard Times or even Be Cool, Be Wild and Be Groovy to play when Sonic was snowboarding, or the Labyrinth Zone theme to play when Sonic was running through it, I also feel like it wouldn't have fit that well and been a little bit distracting. I also kind of wish the Sonic 1 title screen music was used as the basis for the main score of the movies but I can see why it isn't (likely licensing issues)
@@LeopoldLitchenstein The drowning music must've been subtle, I didn't even catch it. Pup mentioned an Eggman theme too which I didn't spot at all either. Perhaps that's on me being too focussed on what was happening each scene... Of course, I wanna be clear, I think direct versions of classic songs would be no good - besides the likes of the ring tone - I think the only direct song I would want would be Live and Learn (specifically the 30th Anniv version) - but orchestral versions of some music, when appropriate, woulda been cool. It's like Pup said, music is a massive part of Sonic's identity. It's all well and good to have, say, Hill Top's name mentioned, or maybe in Sonic 3 they say "Eggman's working in a Chemical Plant." - They seem more pandery than music, I reckon. I still love all of it though, gimme more :D Critics be damned with all there "too much Sonic this time." Like really...?
@@WeeAddy Critics tend to have their minds made up about some movies before they even watch them from what I've noticed, so I wouldn't take it to heart. If you get the chance to watch the movie again, you might be able to hear the drowning music, it is very subtle so it doesn't have the same impact as the games, but it's there for a few seconds.

i would be okay if eggman "died" here because there's no surviving a long fall from that. also the last line "we're not friends" is a good send off to his character considering he's against friendship.

Maybe we’ll get even a comic nod, bc Carrey did also state that if he returned he wanted a fat egg man. In the comics the modern egg man we see is actually a robot as well from a different dimension after the original robotnic was killed. So maybe he’ll be brought back as a cyborg with a more egg man body
A worry that I have for the sequel is that the writers will turn Knuckles into dumb musclehead like what the MCU did with Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy.
i actually..................ENJOYED the Rachel,Maddie,and G.U.N. scene, they were putting the human characters in a role that wasn't useless but didnt give them ALL the screentime which i appreciate

I do agree that the Randall and Rachel part dragged on but enough that it got some establishment for the next movie. High chance that Amy and some others will be introduced as well and that they also have some kind of human companion. Like Rouge being linked with Randall, like she was with Topaz in Sonic X. Obvious sexual innuendos as she also did that with Topaz in the Japanese dub.

Yeah, that’s something I don’t get about adaptations and reboots. Why do they never use the original music at any point? It’s not just Sonic that does this, basically any movie that is an adaptation of a game never uses the original music, and for some reason, even movie reboots never use the old music. I don’t understand why movies seem to be afraid of remixing or even just insterting the old stuff.
Good live action videogame movie is very rare. I am glad that Sonic 1 & 2, and Detective Pikachu is one of those rare gems. What about animated video game movies? They are not going to have a problem Its animated there is nothing to worry about.
With both Knuckles and now shadow we can possibly see rouge the bat in sonic 3 or knuckles spin off series and maby amy especially if rouge shows up in the knuckles spin off. And if they want to create a cinematic sonic universe blaze the cat movie or show.
I do like you’re idea of G.U.N. showing up out of nowhere and crashes the wedding without the catfish idea. They detain Sonic but after hearing Robotnik is back and the beam of light is done from afar. Sonic manages to escapes and tie up the G.U.N. soldiers while Tom and Maddie escape with Tails. It’s short to the point and gets the plot moving, it cuts at least 10 minutes of what felt like padding.
You should definitely check out the promotional comics, they act as a sort of prequel (pre-quill is still a terrible joke) and they explore and flesh out a lot of the game Zones, including Casino Night Zone and even a little Chaotix cameo easter egg as the cherry on top. They're very fun
I loved this movie! Such a fun, wholesome time!! Yeah, it got a little too goofy and too silly sometimes, but I don't mind that because I was still entertained either way. The wedding scene was definitely my biggest nitpick, but at the same time it had a lot of laughs, and was necessary to set up G.U.N and Shadow as the primary antagonists in Movie 3. Speaking of which, WHOOOOOO! Shadow looks fantastic! Can't wait to see how they portray him.
I love how when you look back at the first movie after watching the second, that first movie was just setting up the accuracy to the games and comics in the second. The Master Emerald, Doctor Eggman’s new look, his giant robot, his badnik army, and even Knuckles were all just awesome to see in live action. I really hope they make a third movie with Shadow as well. Edit: I know that there is pretty much a guarantee that they will make another Sonic movie, but Jim Carrey has also said that this was the last movie before he retires/resigns, so that could possibly play a part in whether they make a third movie or not.
I think Jeff Fowler said a while ago they've prepared for both outcomes, whether Jim Carrey retires or not. And its made even more sense at the end of the movie, if Jim Carrey decides to retire then they would just confirm it that Eggman did die, but if Jim Carrey decides to continue then they would just say Eggman survived. So either way, i think we're good and a Sonic 3 is definitely happening
I would say that moments like the bar scene and wedding scene give an opportunity for fans who are not into those kind of scenes, to get up and use the bathroom or get some popcorn. They don’t allow intermissions in long films anymore so long boring scenes where you know nothing is gonna happen for a while give you a chance to get up for a bit. Nobody says you need to sit there for 2 hours straight.
Sonic 3 is definitely gonna be a Sonic Adventure 2 movie so this could be the chance to finally have Crush 40 during the FinalHazard with Live and Learn
@@colorstripes8588 they appear in the prequel comic. Knuckle was looking for sonic on his own when those human-like warrior things. Kidnap him and put him in a gladiator arena however knuckles is so good that he win enough money to hire those three guys to help him. Which is Why they appear before knuckles at the start
After seeing the movie myself, differently enjoyable and interested to see what the third one will bring to the table, finger cross Metal Sonic (my favourite Sonic villain) gets into the films somehow...
The dance battle was my favorite scene! As you touched upon with a big part of the movie's appeal coming from seeing relationships take shape, this scene where Sonic and Tails found their groove with one another was a ton of fun and rather heartwarming, too, especially when they cuddled up by the fireplace!
The Ice Cap part is definitely a reference and even in the pixel art at the end, it shows off S3 Ice Cap and then goes to SA1 Ice Cap. The Labyrinth Zone scene is amazing because it uses sequences from said zone, Lost World from SA1 and Hidden Palace from S3K (and a bit of S2 according to the credits). I just love how they essentially recreated the Sonic vs Knuckles scene into movie format, even coming down to the interrupted fight because Eggman was about to take the Master Emerald.
Honestly, I'd say Eggman's mech is more analagous to the Great Eggman Robo from Sonic 3: it's powered by the Master Emerald, shoots lasers, and has fingers. Honestly, I _adored_ everything about this movie. I enjoyed the whole G.U.N breakout segment, and I'm a little surprised it got all the flack that it is. In a way, it was also a pretty good scene for Tails, since they were using _his_ tech and all.
the labyrinth zone fight literally had me holding my breath! like the they had the scene where knuckles and sonic come flying at each other from the trailer and it was badass but then the very next second BAM it just get 100x my freaking epyk! I was really worried the trailers would have left little to be surprised by but they actually didn't show too much at all and still left most of the best moments from the movie
I liked the Rachel sequence (she really just takes over the movie for a few minutes), but the editing on that final section could have been a bit sharper. Every beat was fine, but some of the shots were just held for too long. Looking forward to see how they do Shadow. The films have been mostly carefree in tone with serious and emotional moments sprinkled in appropriately. Like the way they pitched Knuckles rode the line perfectly between straight and self-aware. But Shadow is so edgy and melodramatic, it's hard to imagine where that balance will fall for him (especially without it being a retread of Knuckle's character arc). Like, imagine if they got Carey to play Gerald Robotnik in flashbacks, and in complete contrast to his Eggman performance, he plays it like a serious dramatic role. Ofcourse my main point of reference is Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog. I never played Adventure so I don't know much about that version of events, with Chaos and all that. Mainly the space station stuff with Maria. But yeah, interested to see how that play it.
I agree they could have cut that wedding scene down by like half and give Knuckles and Sonic morphite time or just something relevant to the new team that's building up
I also like how, although he is really fast he actually seems to have stamina and pain unlike the games which makes sense for the knuckles, instead of making him just invincible like you said
Totally agree, the boring wedding sequence is honestly embarrassing and tbh I’m not fond of the dance battle in Siberia. Will say though they should have done a bit more to characterise Tails and maybe explain how the hell he has been managing to watch Sonic in enough detail to hear his quips/learn what he likes and dislikes.
If Sonic 3 can get across the sibling bond Shadow and Maria had prior to her death I'll be satisfied (also the inclusion of Maria - they could choose to pass on it). Maybe Sonic 3 is where we get our Crush 40 insert song, especially if both hedgehogs have to go super.
They did sonic so good and knuckles blew me away I loved his personality. His voice was on point! The fight scene in the temple was crazy and you could name many more scenes fr! 9/10
5:00 they arent embracing the audio in general. Which, idk, weird sounds dont really tend to alienate audiences, the audio referencing the games just feels like a no brainer to me. Like when Sonic are the air bubble, it was a nice references, but without the sound it just didnt feel right.
Awesome video!! Can’t wait to hear you guys discuss it on Sunset City! I saw Sonic 2 last Sunday and absolutely loved it, and I’m aching to see it again. It feels like I’m almost just as hyped to see it again as I was to see it the first time (and I was seriously counting down the days for it)! I think I agree with everything you’ve said. The wedding scene was a little long but I actually thought, “oh wow if they have time for this and for the Sonic and Tails captured scene, there must be a lot more to come!” and I was not disappointed. I’m still not ENTIRELY sure how I feel about Robotnik being infused with the Emerald energy, himself, rather than harnessing it with a machine or already having a Death Egg Robot - but he was only back on Earth for a short time so couldn’t have all this ready to go. Part of me wonders what it would’ve been like if he’d said something like, “if you can’t beat ‘em, make a copy of ‘em” and then materialised a Metal Sonic to battle Sonic. But then that would’ve taken away from the awesomeness of Robotnik personally getting his hands dirty and wreaking havoc. I was a bit surprised to see Knuckles actually believe Robotnik was his friend, but I’d forgotten about Robotnik calling him his Bestest Friend Forever And Ever, and maybe even though Knuckles was ready to scrap their alliance early on, maybe he really did still want a friend. Tails was done really nicely I think, and I like how he and Sonic got to talk and bond, and Tails sweetly covered Sonic with his tails for warmth as they went to sleep, awwww! And the final baseball scene was lovely, and I am forever glad they didn’t do a dance party… can we stop including those in family movies? Overall I think it’s a fantastic 9 / 10, and I cannot wait to own it on Blu-Ray along with my copy of Sonic 1!!

Spoilers! Question: So how did the whole tribe of echidnas and Long Claw die? This was never answered in the movie. I have feeling that something else happened in their conflict.
@@boiled_walrus6960 can’t be chaos’s since they overwritten the story of how the master emerald was made. My guess both owls and echidna tribe fought so long for the master emerald that they both wiped each other out. Long claw probably wasn’t the only owl but if she was she was op and managed to wipe out the last few surviving echidnas that battled her.
@@Hypersonic-hg8kd if they adjusted the Master Emeralds story they can adjust chaos story as well. I doubt he was the one who took out longclaw and the last of the echidna clan though.
I’d argue that the Dance-Off scene is necessary to the plot in the sense that it introduces Tails’ hologram duplication technology, which aids them in the end in defeating Robotnik.
Since we've all seen the film at this point, we all must know about the Shadow reveal at the end of the film. Great News for Shadow fans but bad news for Metal Sonic fans who were hoping to see him in the next film. What if I told you we will. What if in Sonic 3 they decided to pull a Godzilla vs. Mech Godzilla on us and reveal that under Shadow's skin is a metal sonic endoskeleton Big Brain moment 🧠. Mind blown 🤯
I was rooting for chaos appearing at the end and not have super sonic so soon but since he debuted in the actual game "Sonic 2" I can't really complain. Also I think they kinda did go the GvK route with Sonic vs Knuckles only for them to team up and beat the metal thing here. also I loved the semi "Martha" moment (not really) when they have a talk about losing everything in the past.
I just realized something, when it’s revealed that the master emerald is made up of the chaos emeralds I think what happened there is that when knuckles brought them back together and the chaos emeralds were separated after you know what, knuckles essentially created a feedback loop where in the chaos emeralds are now tied to the master Emerald and can now be shut down by the master emerald. Essentially now the master emerald can kind of create the master emerald while the master emerald can also create the chaos emeralds, so they can actually fall back on it if such a situation occurred
the problem sonic 2 had its called sonic 1 corpo problems, the director, like in the games, probably wanted tails, in there, so we should ave had their relationship to be develped more, here should have been everything about knucled and yes sonic, but we should have gone in with a solid contructed in past movie friendship between sonic and tails, for me sonic and tails friendship felt rushed and non organic. but o well now that they got that out of the way they should regain phase in the 3rd movie and make the story so we can get 4 movies and a couple series of the movies
I'm confused by what you're trying to say. What do you mean by Sonic 1 corpo problems? Also, I don't think Sonic and Tails' friendship was rushed at all. It was pretty organic since they first meet. I understand if you don't see it that way, but I wouldn't say it's corporate meddling because all I've seen is a lot of care put into these movies.
I mean, the soap opera wedding stuff is actually a fun reference to Shemar Moore's history as a soap opera actor. I do like the reference but the pace does get a little slowed for a moment... On top of that, I think the reference to Moore's acting career actually got a good laugh from my sister.
The one thing I didn't like regarding music in the film was the fact that they hit is with that hype track when Sonic gets the upper hand on Knuckles while he's walking up to the Master Emerald, but it lasts like 10 seconds.
Technically, Labyrinth Zone is on South Island in the games. But, considering the imagery of whatever those creatures are in Labyrinth, they're significant to the history of Sonic as they're obviously ancient beings and also appear in Hydrocity Zone in Sonic 3. So to tie the symbolism to the master emerald is perfectly fine in my book. Though I would have liked for there to be a Hidden Palace reference somewhere. The one thing I didn't like was that the master emerald and chaos emeralds were fused into the same object.
I love when movies are just fun to watch. No politics, no drinking garbage. Sonic 1 gave me that, Alita gave me that, and Paddington 2 gave me that as well. Just a good time all around.
I think in the third film sonic should out grow donut lord. He’s learn the lessons he needs. The next film might adapt SA2. So the sonic heroes need an antagonist. More time for eggman and shadow is necessary to stick the emotional landings. Donut lord won’t be able to fit in it sorry.
In my opinion, the second film does some things better than the first, and the first does some things better than the second. Like what was that whole wedding thing about in Sonic 2? It just went from a Sonic film to a Comedy Relationship film. 🤷♂ There's also the issue of the dance scene in Siberia. I can get over the fact that they're doing this whole dance ting, but why aren't people confused about what looks like two talking animals walking on two feet? Does anyone in this comment section agree with me or am I just the only one here who felt this way? 🤔
So idk if this bias or not but I’ll try to give my objective opinion and I’ll keep it as brief as possible. When I went to the movies to see STH2 I saw a lot of kids there with me and my girlfriend, I thought they were going to ruin the experience, but not at all, I laughed with the kids and my girlfriend being a fan of Criminal Minds love when the agent popped up, first thing she said was what is Morgan doing here. When I was a kid, my favorite game was SA2Battle, I used to just listen to the soundtrack on repeat after I’ve beaten the whole game, thinking to myself how cool would it be to be Sonic. I loved that game and the chao gardens were a perfect side thing to do. I love most of this movie, I hated the Eggman Floss dance, however most of the jokes weren’t horrible. I know there was a theme of friendship, but my fanboish mindset only thought how spot on Sonic was to the character whom I grew up with. I think if they would’ve added more OG sounds, that would’ve been perfect. Also when Sonic started drowning, I think there was a hint of the OG drowning OST, not so sure unless I go on another sitting. I had to go to the bathroom as soon as the dance battle started and came back as soon as it ended so not sure how good or bad it was. The final act was great, it would’ve been perfect if they used SA2 Soundtrack, just imagine the Eggman soundtrack popping off as soon as Eggaman started creating his robot in the storm. With all this being said, that middle part with the double crossing agents was funny, it let me have a break from everything that was happening in the movie and I personally don’t think its as bad every reviewer I’ve seen describe it. It might’ve been the emotional connection that I have with my girlfriend, but I couldn’t help but laughing for the most part of that entire section.
If the Sonic movies had only one live action character (Carrey) in a CGI animated world with CGI animated characters maybe it could have been something different.
The beginning of the movie reminded me a lot of Sonic X more so than Adventure for some reason. I don't know in the theater me and my friend though that when watching the movie
8:35 you know its interesting, because for whatever reason this is a very politically conservative movie when you think about it. Like, its message in part revolves around the nuclear family, as thats what Sonic and friends end up being by the end. Sonic and Knuckles fight in ideology but come into an agreement by the end, quite organically. I have noticed lately that a lot of movies dont exactly have that. The "bad" ideology is cartoonishly exaggerated and obviously evil, and there isnt really a situation where people realize the other viewpoint, its just kind of you get to the end of the movie and the bad guy is either defeated or just says "oh youre right. I 100% take your side on this for no reason now." Which in this movie we have the cartoonish villain that gets defeated, in eggman. So Knuckles acts as more of an anti-hero, but the fact he has a very specific ideology against that of the protagonist means that it results in a resolution between the two ideologies. Like I keep going back to turning red because I think that movie had a bad message. When you get down to it, it was basically saying "If your parents say something, and your friends say something else, go with your friends not your parents." Which is a bad message. And if you look at it, how did Ming actually reconcile ideology with her mother? It didnt really happen. It just kind of had a big blow up, a small yelling contest, and the mother does a 180. Just like I described earlier. You never see the mother trying to understand Ming's perspective, no equivelant to Sonic and Knuckles on the beach, she just kind of does by the end. And I think thats because Ming's perspective never had any real backing, her ideology is the one that is incorrect, because of course it is. Shes a teenager. But the end of the movie makes it seem like she was right.
I actually thought the Rachel rampage after the wedding was pretty funny. My friend and I were laughing out loud when she did the drift crash with the golfcart and got out like Arnold Schwarzenegger in "Terminator Genisys." I also think the long-term undercover operation was to help make the wedding bust not be exclusively Tom's fault. If it had been just that G.U.N. crashed it because of Sonic's appearance, then I think it would have seemed like it was all on Tom for causing that to happen. This version allowed the blame to fall on G.U.N. for using Rachel. So this pretty much was as good a Sonic movie as we could expect. The characters were well rounded out and the brotherly connection between Sonic and Tails I was very happy to see it get as much attention as it did. I have a mind for lore too so I expected the Chaos Emeralds to come out of the Master Emerald when the back story of the M.E. was explained. Thought Knuckles taking the dead shards and reforming the M.E. did surprise me and I thought was cool. I also didn't mind the use of Labyrinth Zone as the hiding place of the M.E. either. I grew up on the Archie Sonic comics so I'm more then use to stuff from the Sonic games being cherry picked and reused for different stories.
6/10 a brilliant sonic film… only sonic the reverse of the last film that was a fantastic family film first which is why it worked so well (8/10). For every good moment in the sequel there were 2 moments where I was rolling my eyes, on my phone or banging my head (no joke), for example *spoilers* super sonic, but dancing in the bar and forced feminism… shadow - oh how about the cop no one can remember talking up to much screen time and being forced into scenes where he doesn’t need to be in and flossing 🤦♂️ they did that in the last film and it was already dated but two years after that 🚫. Tails has the original voice actor thank god and I got chills every time the OG voice came out of his better updated model, but all he serves is exposition. Knuckles however was so goddamn good at the start and reminds me of him on his prime like Piccolo from DBZ (who he’s based on cause come on this franchise borrows a lot from dbz) also has some well established conflict steeped into both of their history but as soon as he turns good his dumb flaws shine through… WHY GOD WHY!!!! Jim Carrey felt tired in this, not to say he didn’t do a fantastic job but my whole family agreed that he was out of steam and wanted his pay check so he could retire… if he died and isn’t in the third one I’m out… cause you cannot have sonic at his best without eggman and if they make stone his replacement hahahah this would be the end of the franchise. Speaking of which Stone is a mixed bag, at his best he was fun at his worst… why are you even here go make a coffee you unwanted hollow shell! This is not better than the last film and a 6/10 is a stretch on my behalf and if your thinking oh it’s a childrens film of course those things gotta be in there for children… I’m 16! If sonic 3 doesn’t improve and trust me I will know, I’m out and they will loose money… like… the Smurfs, remember those films?

The Sonic and Knuckles fight in "Labyrinth Zone" had me slacked jawed in the cinema. The action scenes were so well done. Especially loved the callback to the intro of Sonic 3 when Knuckles punched the Master Emerald out of Eggman.

That final fight was just purely amazing. When Sonic was charging up behind the waterfall I got goosebumps, and the bounce attack. Ended me. I loved this movie so much.
I can't lie the fact that the Chaos Emeralds merged into one to become the master emerald kind of makes more since than the ones in the games. Though it seems they are separate entities by the end of it, but atleast there is a connection with the emeralds themselves first.
I know when you get into sonic lore by playing or watching a show its like you have these 7 powerful emeralds than a giant one thats infinitely more/not powerful at the same time outside of adventure titles

Same, it was the only scene the whole cinema was laughing at, in contrast with kids only paying attention to the scenes where the game characters played a part and other adults during the human scenes. Both groups were interested the most during the ending though.

I believe the phrase that applies best here, overused as it is, is "Sonic 1" walked so that Sonic 2 could run.
I have a few ideas in defence of the wedding scene. Trying to think of what they wanted to say narratively with it, first of all it introduces G. U. N. as an SCP kind of organization, started exclusively to contain Sonic and any other aliens. Also, they're a replacement to what Eggman was doing for the military.
It was also a nice way to convey how Tails works as a character, even knocked unconscious, he indirectly saves himself through the gadgets he brought with him, so he's about empowering others rather than himself.
I also see this scene as a sample for the kind of movies that Paramount wants to do. There's a comedy action movie by them that's coming out soon that this wedding scene helped convince me to watch. I want to support the brand if they have more fun movies.
About Tails introducing himself indirectly, I also thought exactly the same, and I'm surprised, as you are the only one that I saw to point out what I thought. Also, I think they made Randall reveal against G.U.N so he can help Sonic, Tails and Knuckles on the next film with Shadow. He might know about the project Shadow and tell all the information.
The scene gave me a bit of Sonic X vipes, at least for the parts where the human characters don't stay on the sidelines.
Very good points, and I generally think the same, just that the scene definitely could have been cut back by a few minutes and be a bit faster paced. I think the pacing is primarily the biggest thing here as it felt surprisingly slow and drawn out compared to a lot of other stuff in the movie. So like not fundementally bad, just kinda overstaying its welcome a bit. And yeah a great introduction to like Tails' gadgets and GUN, just something which I feel like could perhaps have been trimmed down. Like I think a good comparison to how this could've been like with a faster pace would be the Rocket VS Scavengers in the woods scene from Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Like a more fast paced, wacky gadget heavy fight back scene.
@@castome7pi you know, I’m starting to think that GUN could become the main antagonistic faction of the third movie, since their most likely responsible for Shadow alongside Gerald Robotnik. And if you think about it, the commander (Olive Garden Guy) is indirectly responsible for Robotnik’s obsession with Sonic as it was him suggesting that Robotnik could handle it that led to him going almost completely insane, and why would he choose Robotnik of all people? Is it because he was involved with the Robotniks and he was responsible for Gerald’s demise? That’s why I think G.U.N will be the real villains of the third movie.
I kind of liked watching Maddie and Rachel fighting back. It showed how gifted Tails is when they show off his gadgets.

i didn't hate it, I think its just that it went on for a bit far too long, cut it down for 5 minutes, it also glosses over sonic being concerned about Tails as well which I think is the heart of the movie. and it DOES foreshadow the tornado plane at least.
You’re not wrong the actors do deserve screen time, (not to mention in a interview they did say that they had fun being there) but after how well these sonic characters have so much fun personality bouncing off each other the humans are unneeded.

This was such a great film. The only thing I would ask for (selfishly) is even more fan service. Maybe a song from the games? Because I'm just as greedy as any Sonic fan who has stuck with this franchise for 30 years.
I understand that this film is made for a wider audience and isn't quite as focused on the relatively small minority of 30-somethings that came to see it. But, seeing as this is a Sonic property, I'm sure someone out there is already working on remixing iconic scenes with the old music. Only a matter of time before the snowboarding sequence is dubbed over with Ice Cap Zone music.
This film and I’m guessing the next one is to sonic fans, like no way home was to spiderman fans. Both were good plots that were elevated by the clear respect they had for the fans and material. I’m genuinely shocked they hid any mentions of super sonic from the trailer bc that came as a great part of the film. Going into it I didn’t expect super sonic, but as we learned more and got closer, my hype started to build

I've been dying to discuss this movie online, but don't wanna post on Twitter etc at risk of spoiling since it's only now releasing in US - but yeah, I'm glad you said it cos many people are just ignoring it: Music.
After the announcement trailer and first proper trailer featured Emerald Hill music, I sat excitedly through the whole film waiting for it... Just to get nothing. There was somehow less Sonic music in this film than the first one, and that's excluding the Green Hill ringtone, since it's literally just used for that gag. Where-as Sonic 1 had Friends at the start, and the Green Hill piano version at the end. I was so excited for an Emerald Hill remix, even for the title screen, and we didn't even get it there.
As long as the quality of Movie 3 is like this one, though, I'll be happy. Music would simply be my one request to improve it in the 3rd one. Especially, if we're adapting SA2, incorporating Live and Learn. Not having Crush 40 in Sonic 2 after fans were so clear they wanted to hear them, even something original, just seems foolish. But you can't NOT have Live and Learn if the two golden boys end up in space fighting the Biolizard. I'll literally consider it a near perfect movie if I get that, nothing brings more hype for that scenario.
I couldn’t agree with you more. I was disappointed and upset that the movie hardly used any sonic music other than a reference or Easter egg. But I do hope that the do bring in the angst music for shadow when he makes an appearance and we definitely need live and learn. I’ll even be ok if it’s orchestrated with no lyrics, just get it in the movie.
I feel like them using the drowning theme in the score when Sonic is about to drown should count but I'll admit I did want more. I can see why they didn't go all the way, since it can come off as distracting/pandering to fans and some people already whined that a lot of the references felt that way. Like while I wanted Hard Times or even Be Cool, Be Wild and Be Groovy to play when Sonic was snowboarding, or the Labyrinth Zone theme to play when Sonic was running through it, I also feel like it wouldn't have fit that well and been a little bit distracting. I also kind of wish the Sonic 1 title screen music was used as the basis for the main score of the movies but I can see why it isn't (likely licensing issues)

Of course, I wanna be clear, I think direct versions of classic songs would be no good - besides the likes of the ring tone - I think the only direct song I would want would be Live and Learn (specifically the 30th Anniv version) - but orchestral versions of some music, when appropriate, woulda been cool. It's like Pup said, music is a massive part of Sonic's identity. It's all well and good to have, say, Hill Top's name mentioned, or maybe in Sonic 3 they say "Eggman's working in a Chemical Plant." - They seem more pandery than music, I reckon.

@@WeeAddy Critics tend to have their minds made up about some movies before they even watch them from what I've noticed, so I wouldn't take it to heart.
If you get the chance to watch the movie again, you might be able to hear the drowning music, it is very subtle so it doesn't have the same impact as the games, but it's there for a few seconds.

Yeah, that’s something I don’t get about adaptations and reboots. Why do they never use the original music at any point? It’s not just Sonic that does this, basically any movie that is an adaptation of a game never uses the original music, and for some reason, even movie reboots never use the old music. I don’t understand why movies seem to be afraid of remixing or even just insterting the old stuff.
Good live action videogame movie is very rare. I am glad that Sonic 1 & 2, and Detective Pikachu is one of those rare gems.

I do like you’re idea of G.U.N. showing up out of nowhere and crashes the wedding without the catfish idea. They detain Sonic but after hearing Robotnik is back and the beam of light is done from afar. Sonic manages to escapes and tie up the G.U.N. soldiers while Tom and Maddie escape with Tails. It’s short to the point and gets the plot moving, it cuts at least 10 minutes of what felt like padding.
Note when I saw the that beat down sonic gave to knuckles in the temple I lost my sh#&# but couldn’t shout out loud because I was in cinemas
i actually went "the bounce move!" outloud (not loud enough for anyone to hear since im soft spoken) the way he kept going up and down.
You should definitely check out the promotional comics, they act as a sort of prequel (pre-quill is still a terrible joke) and they explore and flesh out a lot of the game Zones, including Casino Night Zone and even a little Chaotix cameo easter egg as the cherry on top. They're very fun
I loved this movie! Such a fun, wholesome time!! Yeah, it got a little too goofy and too silly sometimes, but I don't mind that because I was still entertained either way. The wedding scene was definitely my biggest nitpick, but at the same time it had a lot of laughs, and was necessary to set up G.U.N and Shadow as the primary antagonists in Movie 3. Speaking of which, WHOOOOOO! Shadow looks fantastic! Can't wait to see how they portray him.
I love how when you look back at the first movie after watching the second, that first movie was just setting up the accuracy to the games and comics in the second. The Master Emerald, Doctor Eggman’s new look, his giant robot, his badnik army, and even Knuckles were all just awesome to see in live action. I really hope they make a third movie with Shadow as well.
Edit: I know that there is pretty much a guarantee that they will make another Sonic movie, but Jim Carrey has also said that this was the last movie before he retires/resigns, so that could possibly play a part in whether they make a third movie or not.
I think Jeff Fowler said a while ago they've prepared for both outcomes, whether Jim Carrey retires or not. And its made even more sense at the end of the movie, if Jim Carrey decides to retire then they would just confirm it that Eggman did die, but if Jim Carrey decides to continue then they would just say Eggman survived. So either way, i think we're good and a Sonic 3 is definitely happening

I would say that moments like the bar scene and wedding scene give an opportunity for fans who are not into those kind of scenes, to get up and use the bathroom or get some popcorn. They don’t allow intermissions in long films anymore so long boring scenes where you know nothing is gonna happen for a while give you a chance to get up for a bit. Nobody says you need to sit there for 2 hours straight.
To be honest, this is true. I used this time during Rachel talk down with her fiancee to go to the bathroom.

The dance battle was my favorite scene! As you touched upon with a big part of the movie's appeal coming from seeing relationships take shape, this scene where Sonic and Tails found their groove with one another was a ton of fun and rather heartwarming, too, especially when they cuddled up by the fireplace!
The Ice Cap part is definitely a reference and even in the pixel art at the end, it shows off S3 Ice Cap and then goes to SA1 Ice Cap.
The Labyrinth Zone scene is amazing because it uses sequences from said zone, Lost World from SA1 and Hidden Palace from S3K (and a bit of S2 according to the credits). I just love how they essentially recreated the Sonic vs Knuckles scene into movie format, even coming down to the interrupted fight because Eggman was about to take the Master Emerald.
Honestly, I'd say Eggman's mech is more analagous to the Great Eggman Robo from Sonic 3: it's powered by the Master Emerald, shoots lasers, and has fingers.
Honestly, I _adored_ everything about this movie. I enjoyed the whole G.U.N breakout segment, and I'm a little surprised it got all the flack that it is.
In a way, it was also a pretty good scene for Tails, since they were using _his_ tech and all.
the labyrinth zone fight literally had me holding my breath! like the they had the scene where knuckles and sonic come flying at each other from the trailer and it was badass but then the very next second BAM it just get 100x my freaking epyk! I was really worried the trailers would have left little to be surprised by but they actually didn't show too much at all and still left most of the best moments from the movie
I liked the Rachel sequence (she really just takes over the movie for a few minutes), but the editing on that final section could have been a bit sharper. Every beat was fine, but some of the shots were just held for too long.
Looking forward to see how they do Shadow. The films have been mostly carefree in tone with serious and emotional moments sprinkled in appropriately. Like the way they pitched Knuckles rode the line perfectly between straight and self-aware.
But Shadow is so edgy and melodramatic, it's hard to imagine where that balance will fall for him (especially without it being a retread of Knuckle's character arc). Like, imagine if they got Carey to play Gerald Robotnik in flashbacks, and in complete contrast to his Eggman performance, he plays it like a serious dramatic role.
Ofcourse my main point of reference is Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog. I never played Adventure so I don't know much about that version of events, with Chaos and all that. Mainly the space station stuff with Maria.
But yeah, interested to see how that play it.
I agree they could have cut that wedding scene down by like half and give Knuckles and Sonic morphite time or just something relevant to the new team that's building up
I also like how, although he is really fast he actually seems to have stamina and pain unlike the games which makes sense for the knuckles, instead of making him just invincible like you said
Totally agree, the boring wedding sequence is honestly embarrassing and tbh I’m not fond of the dance battle in Siberia. Will say though they should have done a bit more to characterise Tails and maybe explain how the hell he has been managing to watch Sonic in enough detail to hear his quips/learn what he likes and dislikes.

If Sonic 3 can get across the sibling bond Shadow and Maria had prior to her death I'll be satisfied (also the inclusion of Maria - they could choose to pass on it).
Maybe Sonic 3 is where we get our Crush 40 insert song, especially if both hedgehogs have to go super.
They did sonic so good and knuckles blew me away I loved his personality. His voice was on point! The fight scene in the temple was crazy and you could name many more scenes fr! 9/10

My favourite scenes were when Sonic went Super, and the machines started crafting into the Death Egg Robot, just masterful
5:00 they arent embracing the audio in general. Which, idk, weird sounds dont really tend to alienate audiences, the audio referencing the games just feels like a no brainer to me. Like when Sonic are the air bubble, it was a nice references, but without the sound it just didnt feel right.
Awesome video!! Can’t wait to hear you guys discuss it on Sunset City! I saw Sonic 2 last Sunday and absolutely loved it, and I’m aching to see it again. It feels like I’m almost just as hyped to see it again as I was to see it the first time (and I was seriously counting down the days for it)!
I think I agree with everything you’ve said. The wedding scene was a little long but I actually thought, “oh wow if they have time for this and for the Sonic and Tails captured scene, there must be a lot more to come!” and I was not disappointed.
I’m still not ENTIRELY sure how I feel about Robotnik being infused with the Emerald energy, himself, rather than harnessing it with a machine or already having a Death Egg Robot - but he was only back on Earth for a short time so couldn’t have all this ready to go. Part of me wonders what it would’ve been like if he’d said something like, “if you can’t beat ‘em, make a copy of ‘em” and then materialised a Metal Sonic to battle Sonic. But then that would’ve taken away from the awesomeness of Robotnik personally getting his hands dirty and wreaking havoc.
I was a bit surprised to see Knuckles actually believe Robotnik was his friend, but I’d forgotten about Robotnik calling him his Bestest Friend Forever And Ever, and maybe even though Knuckles was ready to scrap their alliance early on, maybe he really did still want a friend.
Tails was done really nicely I think, and I like how he and Sonic got to talk and bond, and Tails sweetly covered Sonic with his tails for warmth as they went to sleep, awwww! And the final baseball scene was lovely, and I am forever glad they didn’t do a dance party… can we stop including those in family movies?
Overall I think it’s a fantastic 9 / 10, and I cannot wait to own it on Blu-Ray along with my copy of Sonic 1!!

@@boiled_walrus6960 can’t be chaos’s since they overwritten the story of how the master emerald was made. My guess both owls and echidna tribe fought so long for the master emerald that they both wiped each other out. Long claw probably wasn’t the only owl but if she was she was op and managed to wipe out the last few surviving echidnas that battled her.
My assumption is Longclaw died in the same scene where the Echidnas attacked her, but only of her wounds after taking them out
@@Hypersonic-hg8kd if they adjusted the Master Emeralds story they can adjust chaos story as well. I doubt he was the one who took out longclaw and the last of the echidna clan though.
I’d argue that the Dance-Off scene is necessary to the plot in the sense that it introduces Tails’ hologram duplication technology, which aids them in the end in defeating Robotnik.
Since we've all seen the film at this point, we all must know about the Shadow reveal at the end of the film. Great News for Shadow fans but bad news for Metal Sonic fans who were hoping to see him in the next film.
What if I told you we will. What if in Sonic 3 they decided to pull a Godzilla vs. Mech Godzilla on us and reveal that under Shadow's skin is a metal sonic endoskeleton

I was rooting for chaos appearing at the end and not have super sonic so soon but since he debuted in the actual game "Sonic 2" I can't really complain. Also I think they kinda did go the GvK route with Sonic vs Knuckles only for them to team up and beat the metal thing here. also I loved the semi "Martha" moment (not really) when they have a talk about losing everything in the past.
Or better yet. What if they actually introduce shadow the same way Marvel studios introduced Thanos into the MCU?

I just realized something, when it’s revealed that the master emerald is made up of the chaos emeralds I think what happened there is that when knuckles brought them back together and the chaos emeralds were separated after you know what, knuckles essentially created a feedback loop where in the chaos emeralds are now tied to the master Emerald and can now be shut down by the master emerald. Essentially now the master emerald can kind of create the master emerald while the master emerald can also create the chaos emeralds, so they can actually fall back on it if such a situation occurred

the problem sonic 2 had its called sonic 1 corpo problems, the director, like in the games, probably wanted tails, in there, so we should ave had their relationship to be develped more, here should have been everything about knucled and yes sonic, but we should have gone in with a solid contructed in past movie friendship between sonic and tails, for me sonic and tails friendship felt rushed and non organic. but o well now that they got that out of the way they should regain phase in the 3rd movie and make the story so we can get 4 movies and a couple series of the movies
I'm confused by what you're trying to say. What do you mean by Sonic 1 corpo problems? Also, I don't think Sonic and Tails' friendship was rushed at all. It was pretty organic since they first meet. I understand if you don't see it that way, but I wouldn't say it's corporate meddling because all I've seen is a lot of care put into these movies.

Favorite part is actually when robotnic used WALK BY PANTERA to show the movement of the Death egg I popped for it
I mean, the soap opera wedding stuff is actually a fun reference to Shemar Moore's history as a soap opera actor. I do like the reference but the pace does get a little slowed for a moment... On top of that, I think the reference to Moore's acting career actually got a good laugh from my sister.

The one thing I didn't like regarding music in the film was the fact that they hit is with that hype track when Sonic gets the upper hand on Knuckles while he's walking up to the Master Emerald, but it lasts like 10 seconds.

Technically, Labyrinth Zone is on South Island in the games. But, considering the imagery of whatever those creatures are in Labyrinth, they're significant to the history of Sonic as they're obviously ancient beings and also appear in Hydrocity Zone in Sonic 3. So to tie the symbolism to the master emerald is perfectly fine in my book. Though I would have liked for there to be a Hidden Palace reference somewhere. The one thing I didn't like was that the master emerald and chaos emeralds were fused into the same object.
Honestly the movie was so good and the whole Rachel thing would’ve been fine if it was like a Quarter of what it was.
I love when movies are just fun to watch. No politics, no drinking garbage. Sonic 1 gave me that, Alita gave me that, and Paddington 2 gave me that as well. Just a good time all around.
I think in the third film sonic should out grow donut lord. He’s learn the lessons he needs. The next film might adapt SA2. So the sonic heroes need an antagonist. More time for eggman and shadow is necessary to stick the emotional landings. Donut lord won’t be able to fit in it sorry.

In my opinion, the second film does some things better than the first, and the first does some things better than the second. Like what was that whole wedding thing about in Sonic 2? It just went from a Sonic film to a Comedy Relationship film. 🤷♂
There's also the issue of the dance scene in Siberia. I can get over the fact that they're doing this whole dance ting, but why aren't people confused about what looks like two talking animals walking on two feet?

14:20 in the end credit scene they said there was no sign of Robotnik, so I’d take that as he isn’t dead.
So idk if this bias or not but I’ll try to give my objective opinion and I’ll keep it as brief as possible.
When I went to the movies to see STH2 I saw a lot of kids there with me and my girlfriend, I thought they were going to ruin the experience, but not at all, I laughed with the kids and my girlfriend being a fan of Criminal Minds love when the agent popped up, first thing she said was what is Morgan doing here. When I was a kid, my favorite game was SA2Battle, I used to just listen to the soundtrack on repeat after I’ve beaten the whole game, thinking to myself how cool would it be to be Sonic. I loved that game and the chao gardens were a perfect side thing to do. I love most of this movie, I hated the Eggman Floss dance, however most of the jokes weren’t horrible. I know there was a theme of friendship, but my fanboish mindset only thought how spot on Sonic was to the character whom I grew up with. I think if they would’ve added more OG sounds, that would’ve been perfect. Also when Sonic started drowning, I think there was a hint of the OG drowning OST, not so sure unless I go on another sitting. I had to go to the bathroom as soon as the dance battle started and came back as soon as it ended so not sure how good or bad it was. The final act was great, it would’ve been perfect if they used SA2 Soundtrack, just imagine the Eggman soundtrack popping off as soon as Eggaman started creating his robot in the storm. With all this being said, that middle part with the double crossing agents was funny, it let me have a break from everything that was happening in the movie and I personally don’t think its as bad every reviewer I’ve seen describe it. It might’ve been the emotional connection that I have with my girlfriend, but I couldn’t help but laughing for the most part of that entire section.
I would like to think that the people that come through the ring on the mushroom planet before Knuckles are Babylonians.
That could be a good tie into the sonic riders series

If the Sonic movies had only one live action character (Carrey) in a CGI animated world with CGI animated characters maybe it could have been something different.
The beginning of the movie reminded me a lot of Sonic X more so than Adventure for some reason. I don't know in the theater me and my friend though that when watching the movie
8:35 you know its interesting, because for whatever reason this is a very politically conservative movie when you think about it. Like, its message in part revolves around the nuclear family, as thats what Sonic and friends end up being by the end. Sonic and Knuckles fight in ideology but come into an agreement by the end, quite organically. I have noticed lately that a lot of movies dont exactly have that. The "bad" ideology is cartoonishly exaggerated and obviously evil, and there isnt really a situation where people realize the other viewpoint, its just kind of you get to the end of the movie and the bad guy is either defeated or just says "oh youre right. I 100% take your side on this for no reason now." Which in this movie we have the cartoonish villain that gets defeated, in eggman. So Knuckles acts as more of an anti-hero, but the fact he has a very specific ideology against that of the protagonist means that it results in a resolution between the two ideologies. Like I keep going back to turning red because I think that movie had a bad message. When you get down to it, it was basically saying "If your parents say something, and your friends say something else, go with your friends not your parents." Which is a bad message. And if you look at it, how did Ming actually reconcile ideology with her mother? It didnt really happen. It just kind of had a big blow up, a small yelling contest, and the mother does a 180. Just like I described earlier. You never see the mother trying to understand Ming's perspective, no equivelant to Sonic and Knuckles on the beach, she just kind of does by the end. And I think thats because Ming's perspective never had any real backing, her ideology is the one that is incorrect, because of course it is. Shes a teenager. But the end of the movie makes it seem like she was right.
I actually thought the Rachel rampage after the wedding was pretty funny. My friend and I were laughing out loud when she did the drift crash with the golfcart and got out like Arnold Schwarzenegger in "Terminator Genisys." I also think the long-term undercover operation was to help make the wedding bust not be exclusively Tom's fault. If it had been just that G.U.N. crashed it because of Sonic's appearance, then I think it would have seemed like it was all on Tom for causing that to happen. This version allowed the blame to fall on G.U.N. for using Rachel.
So this pretty much was as good a Sonic movie as we could expect. The characters were well rounded out and the brotherly connection between Sonic and Tails I was very happy to see it get as much attention as it did. I have a mind for lore too so I expected the Chaos Emeralds to come out of the Master Emerald when the back story of the M.E. was explained. Thought Knuckles taking the dead shards and reforming the M.E. did surprise me and I thought was cool. I also didn't mind the use of Labyrinth Zone as the hiding place of the M.E. either. I grew up on the Archie Sonic comics so I'm more then use to stuff from the Sonic games being cherry picked and reused for different stories.

6/10 a brilliant sonic film… only sonic the reverse of the last film that was a fantastic family film first which is why it worked so well (8/10). For every good moment in the sequel there were 2 moments where I was rolling my eyes, on my phone or banging my head (no joke), for example *spoilers* super sonic, but dancing in the bar and forced feminism… shadow - oh how about the cop no one can remember talking up to much screen time and being forced into scenes where he doesn’t need to be in and flossing 🤦♂️ they did that in the last film and it was already dated but two years after that 🚫. Tails has the original voice actor thank god and I got chills every time the OG voice came out of his better updated model, but all he serves is exposition. Knuckles however was so goddamn good at the start and reminds me of him on his prime like Piccolo from DBZ (who he’s based on cause come on this franchise borrows a lot from dbz) also has some well established conflict steeped into both of their history but as soon as he turns good his dumb flaws shine through… WHY GOD WHY!!!! Jim Carrey felt tired in this, not to say he didn’t do a fantastic job but my whole family agreed that he was out of steam and wanted his pay check so he could retire… if he died and isn’t in the third one I’m out… cause you cannot have sonic at his best without eggman and if they make stone his replacement hahahah this would be the end of the franchise. Speaking of which Stone is a mixed bag, at his best he was fun at his worst… why are you even here go make a coffee you unwanted hollow shell! This is not better than the last film and a 6/10 is a stretch on my behalf and if your thinking oh it’s a childrens film of course those things gotta be in there for children… I’m 16! If sonic 3 doesn’t improve and trust me I will know, I’m out and they will loose money… like… the Smurfs, remember those films?
