    PLAY BALALAIKA
A young lad is thinking, thinking all night
Would it be wrong, he asks, or maybe right,
Should he declare his love, dare he choose,
And would she accept, or will she refuse?
    Chorus:
    Tumbala, tumbala, tumbalalaika,
    Tumbala, tumbala, tumbalalaika
    tumbalalaika, play Balalaika,
tumbalalaika - let us be merry.
    Maiden, maiden tell me again
What can grow, grow without rain,
What can burn for many years,
What can long and cry without tears?
Silly young lad, why ask again?
It's a stone that can grow, grow without rain,
It's love that can burn for many long years,

I'm the baby in the family and have been on a quest of sorts, dwelling into my ancestry, which is very important to me,wish it would have been kept up by others,I had a tune in my head that I litterly just would hum when rocking my nieces and nephews,no one has ever heard it and I didnt know what it is from,so I found a way to Google it and it brought me here.. As a Polish man engaging his heritage, it is good to recognize that understanding can grow without rain.
Though I am not Jewish, this is still heritage. My family’s roots were Prussian, and came to the US for a better life. And now, we thrive.
Thank you. It’s taken some years to start this reflection. My children, and theirs will know their recipes, music, and colorful culture. Hopefully, this too will halt the cycle of hatred plaguing our communities

    The Barry Sisters's
    Love Jewish Song.
Video 'Tumbalalaika' by
    The Barry Sisters
Playlist 'Gold Girl'.
Video...
    'Tumbalalaika',

My god I'm remembering things from God knows which corner of my brain. I don't understand russian. I had once read a story in a bedtime stories book. It was a story about guinea pigs and a bunch of them were dancing to the "Balalaika" all night long in the story....and I loved imagining what a fun song it would be to dance to. Did not disappoint. :)
Edit---i meant I don't know Yiddish. Would love to though. Sounds rolling off the tongue, sounding exotic and wrapped in ancient meaning (seems to me)

Its really similar to english. I have been learning it, it is super close to english in many ways. The word order is less important in yiddish though which can sometimes be confusing, and the dative case is something to get used to (as well as 3 gender words and changing "the" based on case) but really its been 7 months and I could understand most of this song (i had to look up many of the words but i understood the grammar)

@@unoriginal1086 it is?^^ I'm a native jiddisch speaker, my greatgrandmother spoke jiddisch with me til I was 6 years old. After she died I spoke a little bit with my father, didn't had that much contact with him. So I wouldn't really say it is similar to english... this language was created by jews living in germany and east europe, the language called "mittelhochdeutsch". So it was influenced by hebrew jews, romanian jews and slavic jews. Nowadays (because of the shoah) there is a big part of "jiddisch" influenced by english and ivrith speaking jews. So, maybe u know that "jiddisch". Traditionally it really sounds like a mix between german, hebrew, romanian and slavic.

Maiden, maiden, tell if you know,
What needs no rain, and yet it can grow?
what can blossom and bloom through the years?
What can cry, and shed no tears.
    (chorus)
Foolish boy, oh surly you know,
a stone needs no rain and yet it can grow.
Love can blossom and bloom through the years,
A heart when it yearns, cries without tears.
    (chous)
