OKAY so for everyone that keeps asking i would like to make it clear. my parents are from malaysia. i was born, raised and am permanently living in united kingdom. i have never lived in malaysia before. english is my first and main language that i speak. i grew up mainly speaking english and picked up a few basic malay words. i don't speak malay often bcs i live in an english-speaking country and speak english with everyone including my family. i learnt malay MYSELF and choose to speak it for fun. people seem to assume that i'm not malaysian. i am malaysian, despite not living there or being able to speak the language well. thanks for coming to my ted talk

we being malays should at least be in touch with it, but what i dont get is some malays expect other races to always converse malay. Why is we cant learn english better than they who could speak their own language, english well, and even some that can speak malay. Sometimes i feel the malays are too proud of themselves which stunts them from growing.

Spending almost my entire childhood in canada, i can relate. Susah jugak nak twist ke melayu from english as it was my 2nd language at that time. Sampai segan nak cakap sebab takut salah. Tapi balik malaysia, masuk je sekolah kebangsaan dlm setahun je dah boleh sembang loghat utagha baq ang. Peer influence is good.

this is so relatable, i've been living in london since i was 2 months old and only lived in malaysia for like 2 years of my life (3-5 years old, so like my bahasa is at a 5 year old's level). personally, i dont think i have a terrible accent when speaking malay and i practised reading in roman script and in jawi just for fun whenever i can, but since only my mum speaks fluent malay it's hard to expand my vocabulary and be confident about grammar. i will say this tho, loads of malays who lived in the uk as children (not diplomats) tend to only have a really basic understanding of malay unless they did the iGCSE in malay, so i hope you dont feel like you need to think less of yourself as someone of malay descent
one year and this is still the most wholesome video i've ever encountered ^w^ i honestly relate you a lot. like, not living in the place where your parents are from, not being able to speak the language(s) of said place i.e. your own mother tongue etc. at some point, i had a major identity crisis but i guess picking up a little bit of my native language (by myself) brought me back to my senses. bless you for doing your best, akak sumrah 😭❤️ #sumrahbolehcakapmelayu
Its great to see you're learning and appreciating your origins ! It kinda saddens me that some Malaysians who live in foreign lands didn't bother to connect their children with their home culture as much . Most Japanese/Koreans I know who lived here in Malaysia basically their whole lives still speak almost fluent Japanese/Koreans and I was kinda jealous of that and admire how much importance and effort their parents put on educating their children on home their culture whilst integrating with the locals . Some of my Parent's friends' children cant even speak Malay , much less read Quran and it saddens me so so much .
