  • This is a wonderful animation of the fictional short story by the French writer Jean Giono about Elzéard Bouffier, a shepherd who single-handedly reforested a desolate region of France. The acclaimed film was directed by Frédéric Back.
This is truly a memorable film.

Makes me sob like a child every time I either watch it or read it. And I have grown apples from seeds taken from apples I bought in the supermarket; they are now growing in my garden.

Back in 1987, I was one of Normand Roger's students in his "Sound for Animation" class at Concordia University in Montréal. He had been working on Frédéric Back's "Crac" for Radio Canada and now he was sound editing this little jewel. During class, he showed it to us, before anyone else could see it. We were in awe. Tears, goossebumps, you name it. Everytime I see this, it brings it all back.

Amazing story! I went to Concordia as an animation student back in the early 2000s, largely due to being so inspired by this film.
And you are right, I still get tears and goosebumps every time I watch it.

Something similar hit me 5 years ago, and I just started planting trees. I have now created a forest where there was previously nothing. 1000s of trees, everything in the forest is edible. I share my journey to help inspire others to follow me and do the same on their lands. We have tremendous power to do good on this planet. To heal it. Come join us, and lets build an army. The kind of army the world deserves. I can show you how.

I first saw this film at the Palace of Fine Arts in SF in the early '90's (when SF was the most beautiful city in the world) and when I was courting my future wife who was with me (and was the site I later proposed to her). Whenever I see the film, I think of her, the time that has passed and how very moving the message is on so many fronts. Yes, it brings back memories of a lost marriage, but I always come back to revisit the emotions it brought forth--at that time, at that place....

It is a beautiful story. Some people like Bouffier do exist,
Wangari Maathai of Kenya comes to mind. She won the
Nobel Peace Prize for her work with the Greenbelt Movement.
Sadly she passed away a couple years ago, but the work of
tree planting and her legacy of millions of trees continue.

We need children to be following behind adults doing this work, so they have the skills to recreate it. This can be recreated anywhere.

    Setting = the alps
He saw a shepherd with 30 sheep and drew water from a well.
He lived in a stone house.
He had soup going and shared with him.
The visiter offered the man tobacco and he refused.
The village was 2 miles away so the shepherd allowed the visitor to stay the night.
The shepherd emptied a pile of acorns on the table separating the good from the bad. Divided them into piles of 10. He stopped at 100 perfect acorns.
