Robert Redford takes to the skies in this rousing and dramatic thrill-ride! Waldo Pepper (Redford) is a former WWI biplane pilot who feels he missed out on his chance to earn glory during the war and dreams of being the first man to perform the risky "outside loop." Desperate for cash, he resorts to "barnstorming" with his unique style of aerial showmanship, but soon lands in Hollywood as a stunt pilot. When German ace fighter pilot Ernst Kessler (Bo Brundin) is cast to recreate his famous dogfight in a Hollywood blockbuster, Waldo sees an opportunity to redeem his war record in a dramatic and death-defying airborne fight ... that proves to be a little too real.
Directed by George Roy Hill (The Sting) and co-starring Susan Sarandon, Margot Kidder, Bo Svenson and Edward Herrmann, it's a thrilling, pulse-pounding story about the dreamers and risk-takers of early aviation.

I was 10 when I saw this in 1975. It was especially impressive seeing it on a big screen. It's not an overly happy movie, but it's a very good movie.
I thought some of the ariel scenes were amazing and scary.@@jonathanparle8429 If someone likes old planes, this is a good movie to see.

"Waldos" airplane is currently being restored in Florida.Should be in the air in the next couple of years.

Greatest movie ever
I've always wondered if the WW1 aircraft in the movie were the real thing. I know in the 70s, there was a SPAD being advertised as the last flying SPAD, so it's possible.
Some of the 2-seaters in the movie were from WW1, while others were either post-war, or reproductions. The final dogfight between Waldo and Kessler was done with repro aircraft.

does anyone know if "Nothing by Chance" by Richard Bach is available to watch anywhere? I remember watching these two movies at the theater with my dad along with Jonathon Livingston Seagull...Always wanted to see Nothing by Chance again
