I recently went secondhand shopping for the first time with my sister and it's been the best shopping experience I've ever had. We had so much variety in styles to choose from and because of that we ended up feeling a lot more satisfied with the clothes that we bought. It generally gives me a lot of anxiety going shopping, but this time I felt a lot more relaxed and free to take my time looking around, actually enjoy the process and find a piece of clothing I love.

Bought a vintage and VERY worn moleskin jacket, a silk scarf, and sundry other items all second hand. My Nana (unknown to me) had the jacket re-pieced and it was stunning. Would never buy fur any other way than 2nd hand! Nowadays I am too big to easily find clothes in 2nd hand shops, because "we" wear things until they DIE!

I love second hand, im much older than you and have been buying second hand most of my life. I Granma used to take me to flea markets and jumble sales when I was a little girl in the 70s, as I grew into my teens most of my clothes were found in her wardrobe and Afflecks Palace in Manchester. As I’ve grown older it’s become so much easier to find gems both online and in charity shops. I’m proud to say even my 13 year old son likes to have a look around second hand shops for bits and pieces from books, to gaming even to fashion items. Moreover, thankfully it’s become trendy and worthy of bragging rights to “find a bargain” Kx

I have two vintage shops (not thrift stores) that I've decided are worth the extra expense. Both shops are very clear about cleaning/washing *everything* that goes up for sale in their store, including stain removal (one of the shop owners used to do laundry tips on her instagram), and made repairs if there were seam rips or lost buttons. All things I know how to do, but am really good at putting off those tasks forever, so I will be okay paying more than thrift store prices at vintage stores that provide those extra services.

This was fun, thrifting definitely creates much more fun creative expressive wardrobes. I recently bought a very 1980s shoulder padded navy jumper that has sparkly thread, embroidery and buttons in a sort of faux cardigan style. It was only £5.99 and I'm delighted with it, it has even machine washed perfectly on a cold wool wash. I also got a fancy linen Kaliko jacket for £1, and a beautiful John Lewis wool and cashmere black long belted coat for £12 so the thrift gods have been shining down!

  • @thegadflysnemesis4102

ooh, that yellow jumper is probably very well made if it doesn't pill! generally, lower-quality and/or shorter-fiber wools/cottons/etc pill a lot more easily, especially if they're more loosely/shoddily spun. as I understand it, it's a problem a lot more of the modern garment industry, as it's cheaper to use lower quality fiber and it's cheaper to pay less attention to how well the thread is spun, and fast fashion brands seem to be always finding new ways to cut corners. so that sounds like a fantastic jumper!

It was warm enough for Finnish winters when i lived there and i love having a winter coat that is a bright colour. the other one was an actually quite expensive (for being second hand) leather jacket i got for 80 euros from a vintage shop in Budapest but it is dyed in swirly pastel colours and it has become my signature jacket that people recognize me by, ive worn it constantly since i got it in 2017, and i love it so much that it has repaid the price manifold.

This year I went rouge.. On second hand silk shopping (in person, my lunch breaks got quite expensive 😹). My BF shirts, my shirts and blouses, trousers and now my first "designer" item from the big names. YSL jacket - it fits me and my style and is silk, I left it in the shop and went there after work again to grab it if it stayed (proof for me that I am not starry eyed just because the label). I was always shopping second hand out of necessity, now it is fun and blessing of having for "normal" prices luxurious items (in terms of make and material). I also got few leather pieces I absolutely adore. I needed style shift, most of my old pieces are staying in rotation, but what stopped working is slowly replaced. And my sewing begginings were ofter about cheep fabrics, so often plastic, so I am overturning wardrobe for the wear out and "no longer nice to be in". Love your treasures, nothing of it would work in my wardrobe but that is part of the second hand fun, no two same❣

I love shopping second hand for the same reasons you are. It's just so much more fun! An added bonus - I never feel bad about the size I'm buying. Sizing is so confusing and frustrating and in a second hand store it's either it fits or it doesn't fit and I don't have to feel bad for whichever size the item is in. Don't particularly enjoy doing second hand online, but luckily there are sooo many great options to go to in person in Helsinki. If you come here on vacation check out the closest UFF store. They are charity based, super cheap and have tons of great stuff!

I have such mixed feels about the pricing in charity shops now - I think it's important the charity gets the most money possible but at the same time I was under the impression that part of the great thing about them was that people with less financial means could get clothes without breaking the bank. I realise some of it depends where you go geographically to do your charity shop shopping but it does kinda feel to me that capitalism has infected charity shops.
I don't have solutions and I realise it's probably unavoidable but it bothers me.
On a happier note - I'm not a big clothes shopper just generally but I feel a little inspired to organise some friend dates that involve charity shop shopping.

      I totally agree.
Last year a friend of mine told me about an itinerary initiative called VinoKilo, that sounded really great on the website, because they sold the clothes by weight. I checked out the website, and when they came in my city I ordered a ticket (luckily, taking that in advance, it was free, otherwise it would have been 3€, which is not a lot but anyway)...while I was going there, I started thinking...the price was 50€ per 1kg, but 1kg Is a packet of flour, it's not heavy at all...and so when I went there, I found a lot of clothes, mainly big brands in which I'm not interested at all, way overpriced...like, a flannel shirt for more than 36€, a tshirt for 12€ and so on...all second hand...I got out of there without buying any clothes, that was not sustainable...

I found them separately for $5-7 and I just adore them. They're the perfect transition piece in fall and spring when the sun might be out but its still a little nippy. Secondhand shopping makes you understand the value of items. My mum took me to carboots every weekend at the crack of dawn as soon as I was able to walk and I still do it as an adult, plus charity shops.
My favourite recent find was a black and gold flower skirt from phase8. It has a poof to it that makes me want to twirl 😂.

In my city, we have a residential home for emotionally disturbed youth, which is supported by a charitable group whose members largely live on the posh side of town. Every year, they take over the municipal coliseum and throw a three-day charity boot sale, so to speak, with donations drawn from the members and their families and friends. As the the club members largely live on the posh side of town and buy from the carriage trade shops, you find amazing bargains for high-quality *EVERYTHING*: furniture, housewares, clothing, art, collectibles, and on and on. In the days when I had to wear suits to work, I would go there and buy ten all-silk ties for 25p a go, well-cut oxford cloth dress shirts for two or three dollars, full three-piece suits for ten dollars. Once I bought a suit whose laundry mark indicated it had previously belonged to the lieutenant governor of Texas! I still have items in my wardrobe which I bought at the sale thirty years ago.
The sale, which is in its forty-eighth year, is a local Event. The first day, people will begin queuing at 7 AM for the 10 AM opening time. On the afternoon of the third day, they have a bag sale where you buy paper shopping bags for one dollar and anything you can stuff into that bag, you can walk out the door with. It's a fine way to clean out all the tat that didn't sell.

I just moved from Europe to NYC for an internship, so what I could pack was limited by airline restrictions & my budget is restricted by the fact that I‘m not getting paid. In the past two weeks, I‘ve managed to find a work appropriate blazer, wool-blend skirt and knit dress, as well as two silk scarves for accessorizing - for a total of about $50 in various secondhand and thrift stores.

I found a 100% cotton purple sweater in a vintage shop a few months ago. It was $20-25, which is a little more than I’d pay at a non-curated thrift store, but it is my new favorite sweater. I can’t wait to wear it more when the weather cools down in the fall.
About the higher prices of vintage shops, they have to pay their rent, workers, etc and they have fewer items to generate that income. Also, some places buy their pieces, instead of having them donated, so that’s an added expense

If I'm not totally mistaking, Noisy May is from Bestseller - a clothing company from Denmark. They have a lot of other brands too, like Only, Vero Moda, Jack & Jones... Though I don't know how known they are outside of Denmark 😁 I think quality/price vice it's a step over H&M?

I'm currently at the point of not having a lot of stuff that fits me in my closet because I'm bigger than I've ever been before and I'm super dreading shopping but genuinely don't have many pieces to wear anymore and it's all making me really anxious, because I feel like I'm not gonna find cute things second hand (or it will a lot of hastle at least) and I don't want to buy fast fashion... So thank you for showing these cool pieces, I've been perusind vinted a bit (somehow closing the app without having found something doesn't feel as bad as having spent half a day in the shops and not having found anything) but seeing your items makes me want to try and go in person this weekend!

I love that jumper!! It probably is a cotton blend- cotton tends not to pill as much because the fibers will just break of. Synthetics are weak enough to degrade, but tough enough to hold onto damaged fibers, resulting it serious pilling

The only thing I might add is some godets from the waist down for maximal swoosh, but that can still be cut almost zero waste, if I cut long rectangles out and then cut along the diagonal... Hmmmm. Too many sewing plans to keep up with.

About vintage shops: I do often go to the vintage shops instead of thrift/charity shops because of the low quality of items I often find there (I will always look, though). Yes, the prices are a lot steeper, but I always think about what the item would have cost if it were new (both in money and in footprint). Where I live, there is this awesome vintage shop that curates its items and really cares about the quality and fabrics they sell (no synthetics!!). I pay for that service as well as the clothes. There's also vintage shops that buy in bulk and just slap the same price on all similar items so low-quality items will be the same price as some wonderful items (guess what those shops are filled with, though). Those shops profit from the popular "vintage" label. But I can see all the benefits of a well-curated vintage shop and will always remain loyal to them even though they're more expensive.

I feel like when it comes to the price of second hand items, people often expect it to be really cheap, and I think I’m kind of conflicted about that.
On the one hand, yes it’s been worn before so you shouldn’t have to pay full price on it. Also I think historically buying second hand was an option for people with less financial means who couldn’t buy it new and I think it’s important that option still exist.
On the other hand, I feel like if an item is good quality and in good condition, it’s worth paying more for. Just like buying a good quality item new will be more expensive but worth shilling out for. And I don’t quite know how to word this, but I feel like just how fast fashion has warped our view on prices to the point that ethically made clothes seem “too expensive” and people aren’t willing to pay that (fair) price, I think the expectation that second hand must be cheap also maybe makes us unwilling to pay a fair price for a good quality item?

I agree! but personally I do think people really tend to forget the labor required in resale, there’s obviously the aquiring of said vintage items (which can very challenging especially if there are vintage items that are no longer produced), labeling, measuring, listing, store management, shipping, etc. People running their own vintage shops deserve to be paid a living wage

Love the raincoat! I haven’t thrifted in a bit, but I did a clothes swap recently and got a blue and orange striped t shirt that is now a mainstay. (Actually, many of the items from that swap are now in high rotation.) My favorite secondhand garment is a vintage neon paisley on black late 60s maxi hostess dress with a high neck and cutout and I did pay vintage prices for it but I’ve worn it many times and it brings me joy every time I see it.

I do the same regarding looking through everything at secondhand shops, disregarding sizes and even gender. Sometimes I find the best pieces that way, and it's really important to look in different sizes section with vintage clothing anyway. A vintage size 16 could fit like modern size 12 but it still put in the "size 16" section, so it's a good way to make sure you don't miss out!

Re the Dutch skirt - I love buying clothes as souvenirs. "This is my Paris cardigan" and "my Malaysian trousers" 😊 The pricing difference between second hand and vintage I think reflects the human labour involved in sourcing, curating the stock, cleaning and steaming, etc (shout out to Carnivale in Edinburgh, lovely clean stock!). Charity shops won't often do that... how many times have you found a tissue in a pocket of something you're trying on 🤢I therefore resent vintage shops that have dirty clothes with a high price tag, or they're just from the noughties!

I do a fair bit of dressmaking but recently I’ve been preferring different styles and not knowing what to sew, and I’ve fallen in love with Vinted! I love that I can either find really unique styles that I can’t get on the high street easily, or I can search specifically for styles I already know I love, like high waisted trousers and crop tops. Plus I’ve got some gorgeous dresses for pretty cheap prices. It takes a bit of scouring but it scratches the new clothes itch

While I agree that the price points for thrift shops and charity shops should be kept accessible. I think it’s important t remember especially with the case of private resellers and vintage shops that there is labor involved in reselling too! And when an item is old and valuable a person will price to its according value because well that is what is worth and they might need to rely on fewer but pricier sales to pay themselves a living wage. Clotheshorsepodcast has a great episode on the ethics of reselling and I recommend everyone here check them out.

I think it’s really interesting that you mention that you feel like you can take risks with second hand purchases because the only thing that drives me to buy some items new is the risk factor. My shape has changed dramatically since having a baby and I’m no longer confident in what cuts or sizes are best for me and so I’ve briefly gone back to buying new because I can send things back when they don’t fit well and order a different size or an alternative. I have found that many of my second hand purchases end up being ill-fitting or not quite what I was expecting and then I don’t get as much wear as items I’ve bought new.
Would be really interested to hear your take on it and how you manage to successfully shop second hand and get items that you love and wear because I’d love to adopt more second hand items but I just really struggle with finding things that work 🙁

    • @littlereddragon
      @littlereddragon Před rokem

I agree, there are certain items that I refuse to buy secondhand because I would literally need to try it on to know if it fits. Plus then owning an item you won't/can't negates the benefit of buying secondhand and keeping it in circulation. Then the burden of getting rid of said item is on you.
But my biggest tip would be asking for measurements. It is hands down the main thing that has led to a higher success rate with secondhand items when buying online. I still end up with items I'm not 100% on when I see them IRL but it's once every 5 purchases rather than every other purchase. Get a soft measuring tape, figure out your own measurements or measurements of clothes that do fit you nicely and buy things that don't need to be absolutely tailored to your body to look good.
I also ask lots of questions and ask for more photos to check quality/colour etc and try to be really polite and lighthearted if people are resistant to answering questions. E.g. "you know how brands are so inconsistent in sizing" or "it's tricky to tell what something is like online so a few more photos would be great!" Sometimes I'm ignored completely - if so, it's not worth the risk of buying the item for me unless it's really cheap (under £5).
I also don't let myself feel pressured by sellers who chase you because they're going on holiday or to the post office. I'll leave things in my favourites for weeks or months sometimes so that I can mull it over.
It's been a learning curve but getting that secondhand item that works is so, so satisfying!
