Newspaper behind the wallpaper served as an insulator from the cold.
Wow Steve, sure did have some great colors in there. Word of advice young lady, NEVER open an unmarked bottle and take a sniff. It could be your last and you are too young and cute to have anything happen... 😉
They used to put newspaper on the wall as insulation in old houses.
The newspaper was put on the walls for insulation, then wallpapered over the top of xx
Unigate dairy There were two big dairies back in the old days Express dairy and that bottle (unigate dairy) and a lot of people used newspaper on the walls in the old days as insulation

It was normal practice for people to line their walls with newspaper before they decorated. Extra layer of insulation. Everybody did it.
