    I have watched several of your videos. I like the fact that they're different than everyone else's, from seedlings to harvest.
    One thing I do differently from what you mentioned in this video is that I don't toss out my potting mix. I throw it in the compost bin or amend it and dump it in the raised beds.

    • @CaliforniaGardening
      @CaliforniaGardening  Před 9 lety +2

      genconex Yes its OK to add used potting mix to your compost bin. I actually just made that point in my latest video of preparing compost. So you are doing the right thing: czcams.com/video/q7LnBpJkuhs/video.html

    I didn't know the gravel was a myth. I've got gravel in a lot of my containers. I did well with and without gravel. I think I will leave it out in future buckets. I will still leave it my big 8 inch deep trays. thanks for a great video!.

      Yes JuicingGardener, as you can see in the video by using a good quality medium for containers, you can get excellent drainage. Also you can use every bit of the container space efficiently. Thanks for watching!

    No, no, NO!!!
    Empty the used soil in a wheelbarrow or tote. Then refertilize it! You can use natural fertilizer or compost. It’s a complete waste to throw it away.

    Can you explain why we should replace the soil each season?

    • @CaliforniaGardening
      @CaliforniaGardening  Před 10 lety +15

      Hi Jose. It depends on what you were growing. If you were growing corn or tomatoes which are heavy feeders, you should replace the soil because they suck up all nutrients from the soil. If you want, you can break up the soil and roots and compost it for the next season (the roots will decompose in a few months). If you are growing beans which are shallow rooted, you can churn the soil on a tarp or wheelbarrow, mix some compost and then re-use it. I generally do not re-use any soil that is smelling (as it has bad anaerobic bacteria) - without drying it completely in the sun. Hope that helps!

    Thank you for this video. I have always done my pots the way of my family... which does not follow anything you have put in this video. :-D I'm hoping that my pots this year will be gorgeous as I will do them following your method. In particular, it will be nice to not be hunting around the garden for suitable stones to put in the bottom of the pot!!! ;-) Thank you so much for this. Blessings.

    You have a great channel here. Found your channel now, so better late than never. I was looking for potting tips until day before however, just went ahead and potted my seeds and plants. Now fingers crossed. How often you suggest I water pots with seeds? Could you please make a video on how to use vegetables/seeds from vegetables at home such as Okra, green chillies, etc. to pot from basics. Can they be used fresh or should be dried before potting, etc. Thanks, Chitra.

      @CaliforniaGardening  Před 10 lety

      Chitra Rao Glad you liked the channel and videos! Any pots with seeds must be kept constantly moist, so water at least everyday and maybe twice a day if its hot. I do have some videos on seed to plants. I will try and get in more. Happy Gardening!

    Thank you. I love your videos. I just started gardening a couple of months ago, and killed everything I planted due to over watering. I just replanted some vegetables, and when I through out the old soil, it stunk and was very wet. :( Do you have watering advice for people that are growing in pots on an upstairs patio, and have no access to a hose for drip watering? Thanks again. :)

    • @CaliforniaGardening
      @CaliforniaGardening  Před 10 lety +4

      Hi there! Thanks for watching. For watering in an upstairs patio, I can suggest that since there is no watering hose, you will be hauling a lot of (heavy) watering cans - so try to water 2-3 times a week. Use a moisture control potting mix so that the plant won't die or wilt if you forget to water one cycle. To make sure there is enough water, dig up about an inch of the container soil and see if its moist. If it is, there is no need to water. If you are having hot summers, you may want to increase frequency. Once in a month or so add a couple of tbsp. of seaweed and fish emulsion to your water. This will help keep up the nutrients since containers lose nutrients quickly. Hope that helps!

    I hope I get an answer from you, as I'm new with this and have been enjoying ur videos!
    my question :
    out of 7 plants I planted on 9/23, only 1 has sprouted,the chard. the zucchini plant I transplanted seems ok, but the others I'm not sure they are draining well. should I just start over and replant but this time add petite and peet moss? I use Nature's Care organic for raised beds, but they are all in container.
    thanks and God bless

    • @CaliforniaGardening

      No container is a permanent destination for any plant because the roots will eventually grow all around it. However conifer trees are usually planted in very large pots which are good for several years!
