She almost instantly rubbed me the wrong way. It was the James Bond movie ('The World Is Not Enough'?) where Richards played a nuclear physicist. The book isn't about fascism.
    It's about having to earn things. Being willing to make personal sacrifices.
    Instead of everyone just voting for what they want, they have to EARN the right to vote.

    • @travissmith2848
      @travissmith2848 Před 5 lety +12

      Indeed. And what little the book touches on civilian life there is very little to be gained from service other than the right to vote and hold office (to my recollection anyway). They hide breading rights away behind service or being wealthy enough to buy them. The "indoctrination class" in the book is more about explaining the philosophy about why things are the way they are and making kids think. (You can literally disagree with everything the teacher says and the worst that can happen is you get what amounts to "does not play well with others" mark on your record that won't hold you back from much of anything).
      It is kind of funny..... franchise based on voluntary service is "fascist" but compulsory service for every able bodied person is not as long as everyone can vote.

    • @chrispeters2645
      @chrispeters2645 Před 4 lety +10

      Being honest and transparent... I've posted this reply elsewhere in this thread...
      I first 'discovered' Heinlein during my college years (1985-1987) and went on to collect all of his published pieces of work. Starship Troopers was one of the earliest I acquired and remains a favourite today.
      In my view, Starship Troopers the film is only based on Starship Troopers the book in the VERY loosest sense. In fact, although in later years I came to appreciate the film purely as light entertainment, I remember when I saw it for the first time, being thoroughly disappointed and unhappy at the way 'Hollywood' had twisted and corrupted the book's original premise and basically dumbed it down for the consumer generation.
      Throughout the catalogue of his works, Heinlein explores a number of themes; what I took away from ST was the philosophy that those who govern should only do so after 'earning' through service the right to shoulder the responsibility...
      "A soldier accepts personal responsibility for the safety of the body politic of which he is a member, defending it, if need be, with his life. The civilian does not."
      A simplistic and unrealistic ideal perhaps, as history has certainly had it's share of military dictatorships, but would it actually be any worse than the mess we have today, in which we're governed by bureaucrats and self-promoting, political-propagandising media 'whores'?
      Q. How can you tell if a politician is lying?
      A. Their lips are moving and there's sound coming out.
      * Edited to add...
      p.s. Anyone know of any other Heinlein works that have been filmed... other than Puppet Masters (with Donald Sutherland) which I already have and which was done purely as a sci-fi yarn?

Not because of the nude scenes (which were actually quite mild compared to current films) but because of what he has to say about the whole religion industry.

      @@@jasonbean1176 Actually, I agree with you about the movie - both fun and goofy. My point (which you seem to agree with) Is that it isn't much like Heinlein wrote. As to a film version of "Stranger", Jim Calhoun is right - the sex and nudity in nowhere near as much of a problem as the religious issues.
      I read "Glory Road" back when the Vietnam War was still going on, and I think that the contrast between what Oscar goes through in Star's universe and how it is for him "back in the World" is one of the best analogies of how it was for returning vets I could have seen to help me understand the disconnect of the time.
