It's a max 7 years for him, doesn’t qualify for a 35+ deal where a retirement would keep his AAV on the cap. Basically, they can give him a longterm front loaded deal to drop the cap hit and let him finish it on LTIR. Or he can retire and it disappears.
That isn't how the cap works. Sure you can make a front loaded deal but the cap remains the same for all years. If he retires (and why would he), a front loaded contract still has cap implications, the cap doesn't disappear. It called retention. And hoping a guy can go on LTIR.....more wishful thinking than good cap management.

You sign him at term because you can lower your early salary and open cap space. You can also load money towards the back end, and that gives you breathing room while your stars are in their prime.

Also since Dallas traded his rights before July 1st, most-likely means Tanev did not want to resign with Dallas so they thought getting a 7th and a prospect was better then just lossing him in Free-Agency.
