  • Today marks the end of an era, with the closure of England's last commercial coal mine.
    The Bradley Mine in County Durham has operated for almost 200 years.
    But now, after plans to expand the site failed, the open-cast pit that produces 150,000 tonnes of coal a year, will close.

    Can't coal be exported to other countries who may need it the most
    Even if we don't use it in the UK
    That way alot of jobs and companies can be saved

    It's sad and honestly I agree with the miners on the while the UK still has a need for coal it is more eco friendly to mine our own than import it with the added benefit of keeping hundreds of people employed preventing yet another mining town from deteriorating

      @@leehenry5764 That is a misleading way of putting it. Yes, we use coal for 2% of our electricity, but that is 37% of our coal usage, 38% of our coal is used in the steel industry. So we use roughly the same amount for steel and power stations.

      Arch _ nope, we are phasing out coal, so we won’t be importing it at all, not commercially at least, coal only produces 2% of our electricity anyways and renewables are quickly taking the lead

    We are closing OUR coal mines yet we are importing coal, does not make sense to me, WHY??
    England is sitting on millions of tons of coal and we are IMPORTING it, so that proves to me there is use for coal in this country so why close our coal mines??? Is this BIG BUSINESS playing games AGAIN.

    It’s very sad but for the best; perhaps not economically but in time it will become affordable, solar panels are down 42% in price over the past 5 years and are now commercially viable, let’s see

      Umos not necessarily, we are swiftly moving to renewable and phasing out coal by 2025 so there won’t be demand for it, solar panels are also very cheap and wind or hydroelectricity are very viable and Renewables are really taking the lead now, there won’t be a need for chinese fossil fuels

    Just watched a video on a small coal mine and the miner reckoned it produced 1million tonnes of coal a year 😂 thats over 2700 ton of coal a day in a small towns coal mines

      then times that by the many millions of clones just like her and how many times they change their hair colour. Doesn't that constitute an environmental hazard in itself given all that chemical being washed down the drains? All she knows comes from a screen just like the majority of climate activists. She likely bleats about rising seas levels too never once considering why all of the prominent features of the sea around the British Isles remain at the same level in the water (black middens springs to mind). Does that mean the sea only rises in some places and the water in the ocean works differently to all other liquids?
      Technically we suffer from rising sea levels every Summer in the Northern hemisphere when millions of bodies go for a swim!

    Creating flood and fragile land from mining massive holes on the surface and underground is a bad way to mine. Mining from sea ground and mountains tops should be the only mining processes. It rises and strengthens ground level and makes the world safer. And rising sediment and minerals would disturb sea life not kill it.
