- This is a DIY Storage Bed (aka Selby Bed) that I've designed and built. While it's not aesthetically pleasing, I've found it to be very useful and I decided to make a video to share with you.

It's still surprising that there aren't that many videos around that show people making these. I'm currently planning to build one so your video is much appreciated. I'm hoping you've finished or even improved on what you had
ur dumb
@@indigofromcounterstrike5679 are you 5? What a pathetically ridiculous comment.
@@philm4337 how did you get on I’m looking at making one simular but using my old storage bed rams and mattress support and making the frame from scaffold boards
@@jameschallis4600 I haven't yet. The plan is still just that. I seem to have so little free time to complete anything atm :(
Did you succeed in making one
Thankyou for including all the tools, supplies, etc. that you used!
This is a genius idea. Been looking for a way to access the space under the mattress for short- to mid-term storage (camping gear, etc.) that's easy to use, and this seems to fit the bill.
I also appreciate that you used regular tools almost everyone has at their disposal, unlike other, highly-complicated "diy" builds that require an entire wood shop to recreate.
Nicely done, man.
Hey, I appreciate the wisdom, don't care how it looks, you saved me time and money...so THANK YOU!
Awesome video. Exactly what I was looking for.
I really appreciate your video! Especially how it's presented/done without fancy tools, workshop, or niche skills--- it's how the average joe or beginner (like myself) would do. Thank you for your insights :)
I was looking into this as a storage option. The info about moving was very enlightening.
Thank you. I will be building this on my new place.
Exactly! There's not a single useful video, found yours after 3 hours of search lol. Thank you, amazing video, immensely helpful! 💚
Thank you, was looking for a video like this to assist me before I start experimenting 🙏
Good video. Just what I was looking for.
I like and love this style ❤️
Its how he said poor workmanship .... And I am here with no workmanship ....it look amazing and perfect. This is the best and relatable video so far.
good job this was awesome thank you
Thanks for the info 👍🏼
Thanks for the idea of threaded inserts :)
Thank you for making this
Thank you this is good useful content.
Great job
This is awesome
Awesome!!
Good job. re: those threaded inserts. Those are by far the best threaded inserts I've ever used. I've used bags of them. I wouldn't use anything else. They don't come with any instructions, drill sizes, hex size. I've found that there are two drill sizes, one for soft wood and standard plywood, the other slightly larger size for harder woods and ply (oak, maple, birch)
And I like your use of fender washers to position the rails before drilling holes. A good tip for us DIYers. How do you do something for the first time without making mistakes you can't easily change? (Like drilling a hole fractions of an inch away from where you decide later it should've been?)
I'm going to make a raised storage bed for my boat. I've got a lot of head room over my aft cabin bed. I plan to use plywood, lift from one side. The largest width of ply I can bring into my boat is 38", my bed is 60" wide. Should be doable.
Thank you
I'd put the legs on the inside. I know you can't go all the way to the top, but you can do other things to secure it. You could also put it along the back and, if nothing else, create a storage shelf.
I'm thinking of using MDF and painting it so it looks nicer. The 2x12"s are stronger, but you just have to make sure there's no weak links for places that could break.
i’m installing one currently five hours in and it’s driving me INSANE
thank you
I'm so glad I found this video I'm looking to build a side opening bed but use just manual lifting and hook it to the celling when I need it open do you have any suggestions on how to do this without the gas lifts
Could probly fit more in there if you use space bags instead of totes 💗
Nice video. Don't be so hard on yourself it looks okay. it's not a mattress on the floor
Thank you for sharing. I want to turn my existing bed into a storage bed
Hey I’m looking to do that with mine also, did it end up working well for you?
@@sumanrandhawa4515 No, not yet. I am struggling to find all the material needed
Hi, Thank you for your video...would like to know how the bed is for performing regarding noise when the bed is being rocked? Thanks 🙏🏽
Hi thanks for posting the video, what is the N Newton as I’ve bought 1200N ones hoping it will work with a double bed?
If you cover it up with fabric skirting anyway why worry if it looks like rough carpentry I say. Or if you stain it dark or paint it dark I'm not sure it matters much...
Interesting build and basic construction makes it more accessible.
Not sure if you stated this already, but what was the design choice for putting the rear legs on the outside?
Thanks for doing the video. One of the big issues is ensuring ventilation for the mattress, how did you achieve that?
There are ventilation mats you can get that people use in RV's or boats under their mattresses. Aire-Flow Hypervent is what I have in my RV. You'd probably have to fasten it down to the plywood as it's a type of hard plastic and probably a bit slippery if a mattress is not jammed into a space. You could also make a little lip around the top platform to hold the mat in place.
build it with slats instead of plywood
My bed is on top of a waterbed storage frame. My box spring is sitting on top of plywood. I need a platform frame for my bed due to space for toes..lol so am getting rid of the frame and am building a queen size bed just like his bed for my queen size mattress. I'm putting the mattress on top of the plywood.
Does it make any noise when you move around on the bed?
Next one you may want to consider turning the lights on while you build it
Hi! Do you know if this will work with a California king? If not do you have suggestions on the changes I can make so it will work? Thank you so much!
You may have to change the struts to support a heavier mattress. Some of the lengths of the lumber will need to be adjusted, but that's up to you to decide. If it's wider, change the inner and outer frame boards by the difference, and so on.
Can you stand to the side and lift it?
any difference if it was horizontal lift
I wonder if and how this might work with a floating bed
Where did you get the lift mechanism
It's listed in the video. He also said you can find them on Amazon.
What size mattress is this for?
I believe he said queen. That's what it looks like. You'll have to adjust the measurements for others.
Tem que ser transmitido em português.
How much did the full build cost you?
I'd guess $300-500, depending on current lumber and material costs. The arms were $200 alone, possibly plus shipping.
I just didn’t know what the lift mechanism was called, hence the reason I got really strange looks especially being a woman and living in ak
Who cares what others think. Shows their ignorance, not yours.
Actually in Europe it's quite common to have beds like this 🙂
I have done very similar with Woodglut designs.

I'm guessing you're not married? LOL. My wife would never let me do something like this.
Maybe your wife knows that your useless lol
