    Doctor Strangelove was an American movie about an accidental nuclear war from 1964.
    www.imdb.com/title/tt0057012/
    Tactical nuclear weapons would not be useful on the battlefield in Ukraine.
    Initially, tactical or "Battlefield" nuclear weapons were used for command and control centers, logistical hubs, troop concentrations, or significant features like bridges where you might only get one shot at a target. But now, most of the targets previously reserved for nuclear weapons can now be struck more efficiently with smart munitions.
    Tactical nuclear weapons still have a theoretical role in creating a gap in enemy lines and then exploiting that gap - but Russia does not have the troops to perform this kind of maneuver.
    Since tactical advantages are few, but the strategic consequences are plentiful, I don't envision either side using tactical nuclear weapons.

    Ask Mariupol if Putin cares whether there's troops to take advantage of a wasteland.
    There is a very real threat that Russia could default to the Soviet doctrine of using tactical nukes to simply remove buildings, Ukrainian troops and civilians from an area. That area, contaminated, would be both waiting for when Russia might have troops to move into the area (they don't value survival, ask the guys digging trenches at Chernobyl) and the area would be denied to Ukraine (Ukraine does value survivability).
    I'd argue that the only thing holding Russia back from tactical nukes is Europe and the US response that would make Russia obsolete.

      All nuclear weapons in western and Russian armories are hydrogen bombs, these only produce X-rays and no fallout.
      So they could use nukes in Ukraine without having to pay attention to the wind or nuclear fallout.
      Hydrogen bombs do use a fission bomb to start the splitting of the hydrogen atoms, so there will be limited fallout if the bomb fails (it will turn into a dirty bomb when it fails)

    • @Transblucency
      @Transblucency Před 2 lety +4

      Exercises were done through the 1950s and 60s during tactical tests where US forces were asked to advance very close to ground zero to test the ability of ground forces to exploit such a gap.
      There was an effort at the time to reorganize US and other military forces into structure better able to manoeuvre in a nuclear environment, aka Pentomic divisions. It's quite an interesting (if chilling) concept.

    • @lukekieburtz4323
      @lukekieburtz4323 Před 2 lety +6

      To add on to what the other guy said, the whole goal would be to wipe out an entire section of the enemies defensive and/or offensive line of troops. We tested how quickly we could then rush troops through the gap created, the gap will close within a couple of hours, so you need to push troops through the detonation zone in order to get through enemy lines. The US tested with a couple battalions on how quickly you could safely push into that affected zone. It turned out to be incredibly dangerous to the soldiers being sent in and the idea of using a nuke to push through enemy lines is seen as an option only to be used when their is no other. The idea of using nukes to force an enemy to submit or to push through enemy lines is an offensive move, firing nukes at another country in response to nukes being fired at you is a defensive use of nukes, NATO forces also tested the idea of having nukes placed underground around borders alongside the soviet union so that if russia decided to attack those dug in nukes could be detonated when the enemy was in the area providing another form of nuclear defense. However in order for the nukes to go undetected you would need to have very little security around them as to not give away their position. The idea of keeping nukes unsecured inside of nato countries seemed a little too risky and the idea was pretty much scrapped.

      Also, it's possible that even if he gave the order their may be a break down and the order is refused since even if putin thinks "I'll take us all down with me" the people turning the keys may feel other wise.
      Did you ever see the movie war games?

Now we as the westerners (and me personally as a Czech person who sees the difference between countries ruled by russians in the past and western states) have to push our governments to give Ukraine everything it needs to at least push the russians back. There was a memorandum where Russia promised to protect Ukraine for giving up it's nuclear weapons. If Russians use a nuke, I think it would be a good idea to conduct a little a-bomb blast on Ukrainian soil in donbas occupied by russians, therefore it could be defended, that it's not against Russia, it's against their imperialism.

    You don´t have to use nuclear weapons the way you described it! You can always do what USA did and use it as a terror weapon. Since UA has no nukes and no way to get any, then they would be forced to sue for peace - there´s simply NO alternative path. Using nukes would win RU this war, BUT at what cost? Troubling fact is that US has created a precedent where nukes where used to end a bloody war against a smaller opponent. Reasoning was that it spared US soldiers lives that would have been lost if they had invaded mainland Japan. World accepted this reasoning back in 1945. The same exact logic could be applied by RU and they might delude themselves into thinking that the world will accept it again in 2022. I don´t think it would come to this but path of reasoning exists and Russians have shown poor judgement :/

      To add another point, in 1945 nuclear weapons were very poorly understood. Even scientists were groping in the dark. The public took some time to understand what had happened Nowadays, things are different. Most people across the globe would understand the nuclear option for what it is instantly
      That, of course, does not guarantee no Russian mis-calculation.
