I was a kid and saw this movie with my dad--one of the few movies we saw together. I remember Billy doing the crescent kick and thinking, I want to learn to do that--and I did. RIP Tom Laughlin

My dad took me and my brother to see The Born Losers at the theater when I was about six, we had know idea how rough it was. My Mom said I was white as a ghost when we came out of the theater. I never forgot about it, then years later when we were all obsessed with Billy Jack, I saw it and thought, "wow, that's the same guy as that motorcycle movie that freaked me out so bad."
Now, all these years later, I believe Born Losers, which funded the film Laughlin REALLY wanted to make in Billy Jack, is the superior film, though both are of course low budget B movies. Billy Jack had all that hippie noble indian mumbo jumbo with just a couple good fight scenes, along with some great one-liners. The Born Losers is a violent, no-nonsense gritty biker film that's more like a Western. No hippies here!
In fact, The Born Losers is the very best biker film from the day, better than Hells Angels on Wheels, Glory Stompers, Satan's Sadists, any of 'em except Easy Rider, which really isn't a biker film. Also, Born Losers has the legendary Jeremy Slate chewing scenery, as well as also legendary tough guy Robert Tessier. It's extremely violent and sadistic for it's time, probably warped me. Now I've watched it many times, it's goofy but largely holds up for the genre. It was weird to be able to 30 years on put adult eyes on a film that haunted my nights when I was in single digits. Check it out if you haven't.

Saw this movie long ago as a youngster when it was first released ...changed my life...
I became a martial artist, trained hard, and stood up for myself and was never picked on again. An underrated film that sent a strong message about standing up in the face of treachery and being humble but prepared.

I made my dad take me to the theater to see this several times back when I was a young teen. Really made an impression on me.

This was great stuff back in the 70's. I was in elementary school when this came out, that's what all the kids would talk about was Billy Jack & his moves

We did too man. We had a long bus ride to school and we would talk about the Billy Jack and Clint Eastwood lines in the movies.
This is one of the things that inspired me to try martial arts, and practice the inside-out crescent kick repeatedly. It actually worked several times. Love this scene.

This never gets old! My Dad, a Patton's Third Army veteran, loved this movie too! It's seems kind of odd now, after all he had seen and done in WWII but I guess the good guy kicking some bad guy ass never goes out of style!

Alot of people never realized how Tom was the REAL DEAL! Yeah there was camera angles, technical support, but in life, this man brought IT from within. That's not a good place to be if you were his adversary! RIGHT IS STILL RIGHT.

Nearly every special forces guy from 'Nam was really like that. They did not brag, show off, or talk too much, but in a pinch you wanted them in your corner. They did not start stuff, but boy did they finish it. At least the ones I had the pleasure of knowing.

My karate teacher was a Vietnam vet. His name was “John Drouin” I studied under him in the late 70s and early 80s. If you look him up online you can probably find him. He was an old school, bare knuckle kind of karate instructor. He was a true BAD ASS!…And that’s no joke!!

I knew a Green Beret who served in Nam. He was hiking through town, and got harassed by the local Sheriff. They arrested him for vagrancy and took him downtown. He managed to escape the jailhouse, and used a dirtbike to go into the woods. He used his combat training to evade capture.

I loved this movie in the theater way back when and loved every second of it. Billy Jack was my hero.
I'm 54 now, billy jack was my first hero I wanted to be like, in 2nd grade my mom bought me his entire outfit, I wore it for a week straight, I would still wear it today if I looked hard enough.

Tyrants today haven't changed much. They're still like they were when we were in HS, when this film came out. His line where he says "There's Not A Damn Thing You Can Do About It" was the most repeated line by those of us who disobeyed and watched it at the drive-in anyway.

Not many know this wasn't the first movie with Billy Jack. The first one was several years before this movie. It was called, if memory serves, "The Born Losers". It was a typical motorcycle gang movie, and BJ kicked some serious ass in it, too.....

The great Grand Master Bong Soo Han was the stand in who did that kick. It started my martial arts career right there in the theater with this scene. Years later I got to train for 4 years with one of his Black Belts. A classic film for sure.

This was filmed mostly on the courthouse plaza in Prescott, Arizona. It’s one of my absolute favorite places on the planet. This was filmed in the early 70’s and to this day it still looks mostly the same.
I watched the first drive by shooting there by a Mexican on whiskey row patrons in 1994!
I do my 2 mile walk around that courthouse every day.
I thought that was it.
Makes me want to take a trip down there for some Bill’s Pizza!

Even after all these years later, this is still one of the best martial arts movies ever made. Bong Soo Han made Hapkido world famous, and Tom Laughlin a household name. Shortly after seeing this movie I became the student, now I am the teacher.

Seems like kicks are dangerous for the kicker too . . in some of the MMA contests, though, some people can sort of spin themselves like a deadly dervish, confusing the opponent so bad they don't know how to defend--then get NAILED . . those kicks are more powerful than a punch for sure.

I remember going to the theater to watch this when I was 14, after the movie everyone was out front thinkin THEY were Billy Jack lol.
It didn't help that at the time, every other movie was a karate movie or had some in it. Gawd we were dorks after one of these movies.
After watching the movie with my then Girlfriend, we went into a 7-11 for a cold drink and in Billy Jack fashion I kicked a display stack of canned pork & beans sending bean cans everywhere. We left in a hurry!

A friend of mine pulled a groin muscle trying to imitate a Billy Jack Kick.
The strength of this scene is its economy. Plus, the choreography is pretty damned realistic that ultimately leads Billy getting beaten to a pulp. He did his best but was way out numbered.
When my wife and I saw the Jim Carrey movie “Yes Man” in the theatre, he uses Billy Jack’s infamous line, during a bar fight scene, where he’s completely wasted. We were laughing like lunatics, but much of the theatre wasn’t. We knew then we were probably the only ones in there who’d seen “Billy Jack”. Made us feel rather old. Sadly, Jim’s character didn’t fair quite as well. lol

The kick was done by Hapkido Master Bong Soo Han. Still, the fight in the park was one of the best-filmed fights in the '70s.
I loved Billy Jack...but the best filmed fight in the 70's was Bruce Lee's Enter the Dragon when he goes into Han's Underground Lair to rescue the Prisoners!

@ Yes, the actor playing Billy Jack was also the director. The real fun of the movie was the marketing. The movie was a lightweight film, and nobody wanted to distribute it, but the tv campaign was amazing. It became a standard for independent films for a decade.

Agreed. I graduated in 74. The night i graduated i started my 1st shit in the coal mjne, 3 weeks later i bought my 1st new car. It took me many places one of which was to the drive in to watch these movies. There was one particular Saturday night when nothing, absolutely nothing was going on so we ate some acid and went to said drive in and watched Charlotte's web while listening to Black Sabbath, it changed the whole picture. A couple years later i bought a new Super Glide and joined a motorcycle gang. We weren't much of a gang, more like 15 idiots that sewed colors to a jacket and partied for every reason we could think of.
The 70's was the bestest decade ever. I would go back in a heartbeat, don't need to know what i know now I'd just do it all over again.
Only 2 truly bad things happened during that period. My father passed away and i got married the first time, the marriage was a bust never should have done it.
I graduated 1976 from HS. I wish I could go back and relive my teenage years✌🏼

They told him next time his wife missed women’s circle due ta black eye syndrome that he would regret it. He did not head. A few days latter he got drunk & beat his wife silly fer her talking. GPa, Pa, me uncles, & men O Alabama in Cherokee all sit just awaitt’en. He showed up ta the general store. Nope - he did not make it inside. They usered him ta tha car. Drove him out ta tha ridge. Walked him inta tha woods. They told him to strip or they would strip him. He took off all his clothes. Bear-balls naked. The bugs we’er feasting. They all passed that jug a few times ta help with their duties. Two men held his hands. He held theirs too. He laid across a big O’l dw fall in them hard woods. Bear-ass-naked to tha sky. The two men sat on their asses across the log from him upon tha grd. They & he held ea other in a wrist wrap. With their free hand they keept his hand from letting go. All the other men took turns at him. It was a bloody mess when they left him there crying by his clothes. The horse-whip they used on him was soked with his blood. They dropped it on him ta keep for a reminder never to touch his wife again. They told him that if his wife ever had black-eye-syndrome again that the next tree calling he would swing from. True Justice. Guess what? His wife never missed another woman’s circle. 🤔🤠

Recently a contractor ( active SP Elite ) gave me his bayonet that he used in theater. These gifts we’er all given ta me out’a respect. Nobody has ever said shit about me hat. Only “nice hat”. Stuff like that. I grew up in a ruff & tumble hs with serious MF’s. Women & children naturally trust me. Usually. Most men respect me. Ive always held my own. When Tom Laughlin died at 82 in 2013 I thought WOW man i'm getting old he was a childhood hero. To this day that movie holds up what was so cool about Billy Jack that is lacking in movies today was his humility he didn't go around acting like he was all that and a bag of chips until someone messed with him. The Hollywood tough guys of the modern era go around like their poop don't stink that doesn't make for a good hero

A scene you never forget.Saw this when it came out
That scene was shot in Prescott, Arizona just a few months before my family moved there when I was a kid. I remember playing on the gazebo, and climbing on the "Rough Rider" statue that you can see in the background. (That's the Yavapai County Courthouse.)
I got to meet the real Billyjack (one word, not 2) that Tom portrayed in the movie. (He was from the Yavapai Reservation in Prescott.) We talked about this scene, and Billyjack did get arrested for the fight. He was originally charged for assault, but the charge was reduced to disorderly conduct. The white guys didn't get charged at all.
He worked with the film crew as a consultant, and said that Tom Laughlin was a nice guy.
In all of the movies I've ever watch, that right foot to the right side of butter cup's face line is my favorite.

One of my all-time favorite scenes/clips ever (i.e., most watched). I never ever grow tired of seeing it. Tom Laughlin is brilliant.
No fancy dance moves nothin flashy no trash talkin.
Just straight forward ass kicking.
That first kick after he whomps Posner on the side of the face, where he uses one guy's solarplex as a rebound pad to a second guy's mid section, is one of the most epic moves in action movie history.
I wonder how much of the stunt work the Bon Soo Han did for that movie??

Standard Hapkido multiple-opponent procedure. Start with whatever is closest to you, break it, move to the next. His shoes are off because shoes spread the force out. You want it concentrated into as small a point as possible. Much easier to break ribs and other bones with a bare heel, smaller area.

His stuntman was Korean Bong Soo Han, he taught Tom Laughlin Hapikido moves so they could both do some of the fight scenes. I was at the Billy Jack premiere in Phoenix AZ, and when everyone was walking out, I got right behind Bong Soo Han. He was my size and wearing a shiny black leather jacket. Didn't see Tom Laughlin though.
Not many knew it was not Tom Laughlin so I'm glad you mention Grand Master Han... he was featured in the second "Billy Jack" movie. Most martial arts were Japenese arts when the Billy Jack movies came out. The Korean martial arts movement really took off in the Mid-West in the 70"s when I started, hard training and harder fighting were the norm. Then it gradually turned into a softer more business friendly martial arts community.
O' cool I didn't know that. My sister took Hapikido.. I was Shorin Ryu and actually trained under Tadashi Yamashita. He was the brother of Chuck Norris in the Octagon. Coolest thing ever... He would use me to demonstrate "One Steps" and beat the crap out of me! HaHa

my childhood hero,.. this movie sent me on 22 years of standing up to oppressors and those that could not stand for themselves in the US Army by changing my values system when I was young.

I saw a crazy martial arts exhibition in Albuquerque back in the 70's with Master Han and some other martial artists. He did a bunch of the kicks from this movie.
It is Han Bong-Soo. In Korea the last or sir name is always first. I was stationed at the same base in 1983 where Chuck Norris trained from 1959 to 1960 and met his instructor/Master and saw Chuck's picture on his wall of fame in the very room he trained in. He asked me if I would like to train but my job there was way too busy. I regret not signing up.

I’ll have to do that. I was into the martial arts big time in the late 70’s and early 80’s. And I used to have two or three martial art magazine subscriptions. And I remember Bong Soo Han being mentioned in a lot of the articles. In fact, some of the articles were about him exclusively. I just never knew he had involvement with the Billy Jack movies. I’ll definitely check that out though… Thanks buddy! 👍😎👍

I remember seeing Billy Jack around the same time Enter the Dragon came out. When Billy Jack said *_I'm going to take my right foot and put it on that side of your face._* I'm sitting there thinking "how the heck you gonna' do that?" And *_WHAP!_* he did it too!
I always say many of these movies we can see on CZcams or DVDS are nothing like seeing this movie or Bruce Lee films on a 50 ft screen with surround sound.
There were certain scenes in movies where the audience went absolutely ballistic or were scared stiff: - 1978 Superman when he first opened up his shirt revealing the *_S_* and the audience seeing Bruce Lee using the nunchucks for the first time.
I remember when Jaws came out and the shark took its first bite out of someone a woman started screaming, jumped up out of her seat and ran out of the theater! Those Jaws mealtime scenes were so horrific I was just that much from being right in behind her!
Billy Jack! Long time ago, and I still love that show. It’s funny how you get the “West Side Story,” vibe as the actors prance around.

Wow when I was a kid I loved these movies truly did. One of my favorite lines and I’m 60 now and watching this seemed like it was just yesterday.
