    Just rebuilt two of these type of boxes. Much easier to simply remove the complete sector shaft and cover, replace the seals and snap ring, clean the rust from the shaft and re install. Those boxes have not changed much at all. Mine are both roughly 50 years old. Saginaw 800 style box.

  • @gr8fish68
    @gr8fish68 Před 3 lety +16

    After removing your snap-ring, from the sector shaft if your lines are hooked up, or can be hooked up you can blow out your old seal with hydraulic pressure just by bumping the engine over. Then you are not risking damaging your shaft or housing. simple cheat if you don't want to remove the shaft from the box,the way that it should be done.

    All you need to do is remove the 4 bolts on top of the box and pull the shaft out. Then the seals come out very easy. Just make sure you keep everything straight when you put it back together. I agree that the lower seal is backwards. I put mine back in the other way.

    Just found a similar problem working on my sons 92 GMC Sierra 1500. Was a remanufactured steering box also but imagine my surprise when I found the Torrington Bearing wasn't pushed in far enough which only left room for one single lipped seal and a mickey mouse spacer under the circlip instead of the 2x seal stack with a single lip then a washer then the bottom double lipped seal followed by another spacer then the circlip. Finally the dust cap gets pushed in against the circlip. Be warned, some remanufactured Steering Boxes are obviously assembled wrongly with incorrect parts.Anybody stupid or dumb enough to do this sort of botched repair on a vehicles steering system should be prosecuted. These 800 series are well designed Steering boxes and will serve you well if assembled and adjusted correctly.... which is another story entirely.

It’s on a 89 c2500 and I recently ls swapped the truck. Using a 5.3 power steering pump shouldn’t affect it right? I’m still trying to figure out what went wrong, any input would really help

    I've replaced both hoses ( high side was leaking causing steam) but the box still leaks. Looks like it's coming from the steering column end not the pitman arm side underneath.
    Is that possible?

    I know this is an older video. But that outer dirt seal was installed correctly. If you have fluid leaking it’s not because of your outer dirt seal failing. It’s because your inner oil seal has failed. If your oil seal is doing it’s job correctly then oil shouldn’t even make it out to your dirt seal.

    • @bobbyfox1312
      @bobbyfox1312 Před 4 lety

      Now there is a really good chance that since it didn’t have the dust seal installed that dirt and water corroded the shaft which caused the outer dirt seal to fail which then caused dirt to make it to your oil seal and caused it to fail

You can also look on Google Images and there's lots of pictures showing the steering boxes in the positioning of the seals. You just have to make sure to keep the seal straight if you have a long piece of pipe the same diameter as one of the seals you can use that to tap the seal in with and we'll go in between the steering shaft. You may even be able to find some plastic PVC pipe from Home Depot with a close enough diameter to work and remember a snap ring will go in after that and keep it in place.

      Greg Robinson I won't buy anything from A1 Cardone ever again.
      A sales rep from O'Reilly Auto Parts told me they dropped the whole Cardone line do to so many returns.

      I put a overhauled Cardone steering gearbox into my 67‘ Riviera.
      It stayed there for 1 hour - because the play was much worse than with the original one....
      But at least it was not leaking 😜

    I know this is old video but if anyone could help me, I rebuilt my steering box about 6 months ago following another CZcams video thinking that I had success in because I made it with too much patience and followed every step, now the steering box leaked while warming up the truck and when I drove to pull up to a shadowed spot then just shot out too much fluid by the output shaft popping out the dust seal from one side, Since you all say that's only a dust seal not a pressure seal, shoul I assume that something else is broken inside the box???? Any info will be very appreciated thanks!!!

    • @JohnSadlersAutoRepair
      @JohnSadlersAutoRepair Před 3 lety +1

      Mine had a broken snap ring, it's very important to put the seals in the correct facing position and a slight nick or deformed area is all it takes to leak.
      Also I only buy the seals from the local dealership.

      Thank you for replying so soon, so it worked out good for a bit less than a year then it leaked so bad, any idea??? I jut pushed the output shaft seal back with special tubing that I did for it and was adding fluid with pitman arm off as I turn it all the way slow then fluid came down and added more fluid at same time the steering pump started making a winning noise and popped the seal out and shoot fluid again by the box output shaft.... Too long story but My question is in your opinion could the st.. pump be broken or the steering box???? I'm just about buying a new steering box and want an opinion before I hope you can help me I appreciate it so much...

      @@castronly87 after you pushed the seal back up, did the snap ring fit in the groove inside the housing? Gotta make sure you can see the groove inside before you put the snap ring on, otherwise it will slide down an the seal will come out.
      Also make sure the snap ring is good quality, the one on mine was broken inside there.
      The dealer sells the best seal kit for that job.

    So would a bad dust boot alone cause it to leak

    • @JohnSadlersAutoRepair
      @JohnSadlersAutoRepair Před 4 lety +1

      Nope, the missing dust boot allows the shaft to get dirty and rusty which will be a huge problem when doing a seal replacement.
      The broken snap ring is the main reason the steering box started leaking.

      There isn't one, I use a socket or round piece of metal on the outside of the seal and tap it in until its flush with the cylinder head.

      @@JohnSadlersAutoRepair Me too, and the parts stores look at you as if YOU defected the part. I always open boxes and have found used parts in new boxes, someone used the new one and replaced it with bad. It saves having them accuse YOU of switching parts, and I had a go in with O'Reilly's, I had a commercial account and they tried to slip me a used steering box, and refused to replace it...time to call corporate, I guess it helped being a municipal judge but I hate to pull rank.

      Florescent lights pulse at a higher rate than the human eye can see. But it can be seen though a camera. Kinda like an old tube TV or computer monitor if you look at it though a camera you can see it rolling. Also eagles can see the pulse of a florescent light. It's like a strobe light to them. That's why when in captivity they use incandescent or led light

    He's wrong about the outer seal its not in backwards!! Its in that way to keep water and dirt from entering into the box!! The upper seal is there to seal the power steering fluid in the box!!! If you put the outer seal in the way he says it goes, and you submerge the box accidentally it will fill with water!! The outer seal goes in with sealing facing out!!

    So is it serious driving the vehicle while leaking

    • @JohnSadlersAutoRepair
      @JohnSadlersAutoRepair Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Muli, if the leak is small and you keep the fluid level full you can wait for awhile. Example: you fill the power steering up and 2 days later you here the noise when the fluid level gets low ( whining, werring sound ) and you fill it up right away you can drive like that until you fix it.
      When the pump gets low on fluid and makes that noise all the time ,then it will damage the pump and steering gear box.

    You should really edit this video or description, as many of the people in your comment section have said.....the outer seal is actually a dust wiper to keep contamination out and the lip should be facing OUTWARDS. Not everyone reads the comments section and may install it incorrectly due to your video.
