Part of me thinks that it wasn’t terrible that the Dursleys didn’t tell Harry the truth about his parents. Imagine telling a 10 year old that his parents were murdered by a serial killer who was targeting him. That would be a lot for a kid.
Agreed. But they didn't do it because of the god reason you mentioned. It was more out of hate and pettiness.
You overestimate the Dursley's. They were hellbent on keeping Harry away from his rightful world. There was no kindness in their reasons

@@acmiller22 oh 100%. But Harry not knowing everything until he was ready was partially why Dumbledore left him with them. It’s a lot to drop on a kid. lol.

Vernon doesn't buy a bun. He INTENDS to buy a bun, but comes out with a large donut. Which I think is brilliant writing, because even though it doesn't show what goes on *inside* the bakery in the book, it still implies that he went in there, saw the donuts and caved.
I think in England "buns" are just a a category of sweet breads, and would include donuts? Sort of like how American cookies are biscuits and American biscuits are scones.
The Dursleys aren't serving a boring dinner because they're British, they're serving a boring dinner because they're the Dursleys.
FYI, Aunt Marge was only found over Sheffield in the movie. In the book, she never left the house on Privet Drive.

Honestly I’m honestly not surprised that Dudley doesn’t like magic. He had some pretty traumatic magical experiences.
1: gets a tail
2: magic ruins an important thing for his dad
3: Marge has to be traumatizing, magic again hurts someone he cares about
4: he’s hurt by magic (the toffees from the twins)
5: dementors…need I say more?
6: Dumbledore uses magic to annoy him (not bad, but I need an example lol)
7: has to literally upend his entire life because of magic.
All that and he still accepts Harry in the end. Now that's character growth.

I'm not saying he's got the best redemption story of all time, I'm saying it wouldn't have been all that unreasonable in his situation to have hated Harry his entire life, and he rose above it despite his parents. It's not great. But it IS good. And I will never not like it when people make an effort to be better people. Celebrate the tiny wins, so that the ones who make it that far are encouraged to go even farther. That's how we change lives.

What's really interesting about the Dementor's thing in the 5th book is it's assumed Petunia heard James & Lily talking about them. YET, later in the 7th book you realize that it was Snape & Lily talking about it. 15:24
Also, what else is significant in that chapter is it's the first time you see Petunia actually standing up to Vernon & you see a hint of the suppressed twisted love she has for her Sister & Harry.
Additionally, what is even crazier about the fake awards ceremony is the area was going through a Drought with water restrictions as well. So the fact they fell for it is even funnier.
What else is crazy is the Advance Guard used some Magic at the Dursley's yet it didn't seem to affect the Trace on Harry or Alert the Ministry in any way.
Petunia says something along the lines of "I heard that boy telling my her about them" and Harry responds with something like "if you're talking about my father could you just say their names". So Petunia knew who she was talking about but doesn't use names and Harry assumes she meant his parents.
@@SeniorDankyKangYes, that's my point. We the readers when we first read that (before re-reading the series multiple times after it was completely released), assume the same thing. So it's very impactful realizing everything about Snape at the end and how much Snape saved Harry. Even before he begged Voldy to spare Lily, if Petunia hadn't overheard that conversation and understood how dangerous Dementors are she may have still supported Vernon kicking Harry out. But cause she does care about Harry in her Twisted way and understands the danger she didn't.
So Snape has saved Harry more times then Harry realizes.

The Dursley's were cheating on the drought restrictions and still watering their lawn, weren't they? I think it was implied. I know they say the neighbor was watering at night or something so I think we are meant to gleam Vernon is also cheating but not as well.
As for the trace, Voldemort is confirmed back. New Minister of magic. New ministry in many ways. I'm sure it showed up, but I presume they were aware Harry would be moved at some point and then just put 2 and 2 together. They had larger fish to fry in hunting down and fighting death eater than to try and enforce underage wizardry. That was my perspective anyway.

There's one in the HP universe would be my guess.
I think it's very possible that it doesn't even exist in universe and Vernon just made it up. The books happen in a time before the internet was mainstream, so it's not like they would be caught up in the lie.

With Petunia knowing about dementors from Snape I remember because she says she "heard that awful boy talking about them" and Harry says "if you mean my mum and dad use their names" or whatever exactly those quotes are so for me it's easy to remember because we then see the scene in Snapes memories
The question about how petunia knew of the dementors kinda blew my mind. I had to go back and listen to that scene. When harry asks how she knew she says "i heard that awful boy tell her about them" and harry says "if you mean my parents why not say their names." I never made the connection that she was talking about snape, always thought it was james. Great vid as always!

1: Car to the train station.
2: Flying car to the Weasleys.
3: Magical bus to London.
4: Fireplace to the Weasleys.
5: Broom to Grimmaud.
6: Apparate to Sluuudgehorn

I have a suggestion for the what if series. in year 4 we get introduced to the pensive and the idea of reviewing thoughts and memories. what if after Harry fights Voldemort in the graveyard why doesn't Dumbledore suggest to review Harry's memories of that night with fudge. they have convicted "killers" on memories (Morphin and hokey). As Harry is 14 he isn't capable of modifying his memories on his own and it was still too new for someone else to tamper with it. would that change fudges mind if so how would the ministry helping the order change Voldemort's plans?
