- “My full-on vision for it is to be a community hub.” Earlier this year, Ian Gonzalez had to make the gut-wrenching decision to temporarily close his running store, Last Lap Cornerstore in Chicago. As he looks back on the past and the struggles he’s faced, he’s more excited for the future.
To be able to ensure stores like Last Lap remain open, The Running Industry Diversity Collation (RIDC) is launching RUN THE BLOCK, a new mentoring and grant and initiative dedicated to increasing ownership amongst Black, Indigenous, and other people of color (BIPOC) within the running industry. I remember reading about the store in the midst of the Covid pandemic from the Democratic Republic of Congo (Africa) where I lived at the time. I had little hope I'd ever get to run again and I promised myself there and then I shouldn't give up and try and make it to the Chicago marathon just so that I could visit the store. in 2022, my wish was granted. It was one of the first places I went to as soon as I landed in the city. One of my best memories ever. Once you have a new location, I'll still come. All the very best

Thank you for this episode Brooks. It's good to see the Human side and Community side of the Running culture. We need a break from all the Elitists and Professionals Advertisements and marketing tactics today.
Time to go back to the basics of Humanity through Humility.
