      Seriously, as far as origins go, it could have been worse for the Reapers. I wished it was more extravagant, strange and borderline esoteric, due to either happenstance during their evolution or creation or maybe the universe itself and the life that had evolved at the time was actually quite different then what it is in the modern day Mass Effect universe.

      It might be boring, but its the most realistic... a alien race like that would have gotten so incredibly arrogant that they would have never imagined anything they do possibly going wrong...
      so, they'd obviously think that they could make a perfect a.i while all their servant races aren't smart enough to make a good one.

    What i love about reapers(and you pointed that out in notes) is that their way of thinking is clearly how machine or program would think. Reapers basically cought themself in infinite loop. As would any learning machine do, reapers tried to make their work more effective. By creating mass relays and citadel they could make technogical progress of any race much faster. Faster cycles means more attemps to find solution(race that would not create AI). This also meant that harvesting would be much more quicker and effective(again faster cycle). But by doing this they basically force every race into pretty much same technological development which lead into not finding solution.
    When you think about it(and know something about machine learning) this is basically just basic machine learning process with using catastrophe model as solution when process fell into local optimum. Only problem was that methods used for making process faster lead untimately into same local optimum and global optimum could never be found. This also explains why they need Shepard to make choise for them. They simply cant find it on their own.

    The Leviathans were aware of the imminent dark energy threat and created the Intelligence to preserve life at any cost. Maybe it’s advanced species that were the cause of stars dying at an alarming rate or the Reapers were created to preserve as much life as possible until the end, so it’s the Intellegence’s only solution. Of course the dark energy plot got retconned and instead we got the endings and an origin that doesn’t even make any sense.

      @thorodinson292 Před 3 lety +26

      The dark energy plot doesn't even make sense. Dark energy is the force, that is responsible for the universe's expansion. This will eventually lead to a universe so big, that particles can't collide anymore, making the creation of new planets, stars etc. impossible. If the reapers were to wipe out the ones who use dark energy, eventually converting it all into another form of energy (since energy doesn't get lost), they would keep the expansion going, eventually dooming the universe. If all the dark energy were to be converted, the universe would start shrinking, merging everything together, until there is one black hole containing all the mass of the entire universe. Said black hole would explode, releasing all mass and creating a new universe. The reapers would stop that from happening.

    The reason the reapers lost this cycle was because they got sloppy. All other traces of ancient civilizations were wiped out, yet somehow some of the Prothean technologies survived, along with multiple Prothean VI's, plans for the Crucible, and certain species such as the ancient Asari, Turian, and Salarians not getting harvested into Reapers.
    The Reapers got sloppy. The Protheans gave the next cycle a couple thousand years head start. That was the downfall, an AI making a single mistake.

      @noblaw7595 Před 3 lety +25

      The Crucible wasn't only built by Protheans, it's been an ongoing effort for several cycles.
      Also the Protheans learned mass effect technology from the Inusannon, so this pattern wasn't the first occurence.
      But yeah I think the Protheans were a particularly powerful race, which means they were harder for the reapers to kill, and allowed them to leave enough behind so that the next cycle would win.
      The reprogramming of the Keepers to prevent them from opening the portal of the Citadel was a critical achievement. Else, the story would have ended as soon as Mass Effect 1.

    Late but the different reaper ship classes are all made from the present intelligent species during the harvesting cycle, yes, but only certain species become certain classes. Sovereign class reapers are made based on what the reapers define as the “apex” species of that cycle and only those species become sovereign class ships. During the cycle present in game humanity was determined to be the apex species of their cycle, thus they wouldve been harvested for a capital ship. In the previous ones the true protheans would’ve been classed as the dominant species of their cycle. I doubt they were incompatible and became collectors, but its fair to assume that they work just like the reaper ground troops we see in game where theyre bodies drained of extreme amounts of organic material, then reanimated using reaper tech. The collectors being prothean husks that act as an agent to do some things as the reapers are in dark space
    All “lesser” species by reaper definition would make up all the smaller ship classes. Due to the smaller sized and how much less advanced the smaller ship classes are compared to the sovereign class ones, its very likely the “lesser” species would be made into multiple of the smaller reapers, compared to the apex species just being a single sovereign ship.

The ending made total sense 90% of the players who completed mas effect3 didn't play the first or the 2nd game as the 3rd had multiplayer had a no RPG element if wanted an auto level up and a more story-driven side to attract the "casual" gamers. They probs thought the ending was a mess as the Prothean DLC and Leviathan ark were DLC and missing out on the first game. In both DLC's you learn from Javik and the prothhean AI there's a pattern to harvest and the user-friendly technology "Being the reaper built Mass Relay's and the fully maintained Citadel to guide advanced life along the route the reapers wanted and use the citadel as the main galaxy hub of government. The Leviathan made the catalyst millions of years ago which in turn made the reapers that cleansed the galaxy of advanced life and technology every 50k years. The whole ending was like a test whereas cycle races would have to pass with cooperation with synthetics to build the crucible that's why the reapers didn't destroy it right off the bat and didn't in other cycles. So showing the catalyst AI that this is the first cycle that has worked together and passed the test and working with synthetics and being the first person to make it to the citadel nexus where the AI lives. And a machine AI that's millions of years old that harvested trillions and thousands of races throughout the millennia a galaxy-wide test to show that organic life has evolved enough to make the decision being four to show we have evolved to police ourselves in sense. It really got me at the time and now people shitting on the trilogy ending whereas you can tell the vast majority of them have sunk many hours into the trilogy. I've put hundreds of hrs done all the side missions read all the lore and got the platinum on the original 3 and now the legendary edition. It's a shame the Prothean DLC and Leviathan DLC was out of the base game as both story arks were crucial to the whole trilogy story as a whole. And the only reason the Protheans didn't complete the crucible in the last cycle was not the reapers destroyed it as you learn from Javik the flaw of the protheans were the system of government being an empire more like a dictatorship and all races conformed to one doctrine one system, so when the Citadel mass relay was activated their entire one system government was cut off and so were the mass relays that what made our cycle different in this game. A machine intelligence that old with a directive to preserve life at all costs would have such a galaxy-wide test of sorts or test doesn't matter how many cycles it would have taken and that very ending and test is mass effect 3. Cooperation between species organics of all sorts and machines. And the decision in the end control destroys do nothing or joining would have been left to the first organic or synthetic life form to be the first to make it to the Citadel nexus. The AI only appeared to be a little boy as it was a projection from Shephard's mind as he was haunted by the child killed at the start of the game. If it would have been a Krogan that made it to the nexus it probs would have been a Krogan tark. It was a server decision on Bioware part to keep these two DLC's out of the base game as with lore implication for the trilogy can't be underestimated Javik recounts of the cycle's and the makers the leviathans and Javik explaining the beacons which in fact actually started of the trilogy by Shepard accidentally coming into contact with one on Eden prime, And the potheans beacons places on the 'primitives planets or close by like it was for us on Mars. The prothean DLC through Javik gave us answers to why they were there. Sorry for such a long comment but this trilogy spammed years and hundreds of hours of gameplay and even today CZcams channels shit on the conclusion whereas you can tell they are just jumping on the bandwagon and haven't put the hrs in.

      Plenty of people played all three games and plenty of people were not happy having 3 basic choices that didn't resolve anything. That and some stupid kid telling us what we can and cant do. The fact that Bioware released DLCs after the fact to explain their original rushed, random endings, only proves that it wasn't resolved properly. That said, despite their lazy cute attempt at being "artsy" or "ambiguous" with the climax... The series up to that point is fantastic and I enjoy playing it everytime... Until the end.

      @@nobody-wk6ej obviously you didn’t play all 3 games. What did you expect to happen at the end? The game is based on a AI made by the Galaxy most advanced race up to a billion years ago. As as you say some stupid kid the AI being the nexus or catalyst only appeared to Shepherd as a ‘stupid kid as seeing the kid get blown up leaving earth haunted shepherd throughout his dreams in the 3rd game. As I said if it was a different species that made it to the nexus the AI would be shown to them as something else. Seriously if you played the three games like properly what were you expecting? It’s a fucking RPG not a action game like many new comers thought it was in ME3. The game is based on a Task that’s gone on for hundred of millions of years. Yeah, no shit the game is about synthetics, that's not even the issue. Nor is the action/RPG element. This is about the sloppy stupid ending. @@nobody-wk6ej No! My original comment was regarding having a critical plot point of the game being the Leviathan story ark and Jarvik recount of the previous cycle and the dialogue you have with him throughout the game and having him there when talking to the Prothean VI. The DLC wasn't put together it was shaved from the game. My point is it's a shame that a massive percentage of people never bought the DLC so didn't experience a vital story arc to the Mass Effect Trilogy. And secondly, my 2nd point was what were people expecting the ending to be? Meet the AI and he says congratulations you are the first now grab a beer and chill out? It's an RPG choice were given that had Galaxy wide consequences and wrapped up all races and their relation to the reaper and the 50k cycle. If you played it as an action game there was destroy the reapers. My 3rd point is it was the PS3 days devs got greedy when DLC came out mainstream and so many good games got their DLC shaved from the finished game and playing ME3 again in the Legendary edition with how the game was meant to be really shown.

Its left kind of vague, but basically, something about the engines automatically cutting or reversing or diverting course or something. The Reaper doesn't stop the ship from suicide running, something built into the Mass Effect tech (which they leave for us) on the ground level, makes it so that mass effect ships stop THEMSELVES from suicide bombing a reaper ship *shrug*.

  • @oompalumpus699

    I don't understand the bit about the sub-routines that prevented ships from initiating kamikaze attacks. That doesn't make sense to me.
    From what I understand, for a device to be made, you would need to do the following: conceptualize, design, and produce something material from those two steps.
    The Prothean caches probably contained both blueprints and samples the races could use to make their own stuff.
    Now, those sub-routines could have only made it across if the Mass Effect races copied and pasted the schematics of the propulsion devices as is. To program a computer, to make functioning code, you would have to usually make it from scratch. (Or in the case of our Earth, get it from Stack Overflow). Any programmer worth their salt could have found out there's something weird in the guidance systems, unless of course again, they just copied and pasted it as is without any modifications whatsoever.
    The only way for that to make sense is if the Reapers or the Leviathan AI already infiltrated the guidance systems of every ship in the Milky Way and inserted the malicious sub-routines.

    - Economy is more egalitarian or provides more opportunities - even with Capitalist issues like corporate exploitation and immoral practices like Feros and Noveria workers still have more mobility than current times.
    - Diverse cultures and life styles, even with the more bigoted and fearful political parties,, it is widely more recognized that getting along is overall more beneficial to all society(s) - Citadel and in some ways Omega shows this.
    Then considering all the enjoyment and fruits of Scientific knowledge, discoveries and technological advancements.
    - space travel from planet to planet and system to system is like going to today's airports and travelling state to state and country to country.
