I have alopecia in the back of my head but it's from me wearing my hair in a wrap style for year's and tying my hair scarf tight in the same place. But since I started using those Kaledascope hair drops it's been growing back in. I don't have scaring at all! I'm trying to grow my edges in longer now because their short. I do a lot of dying my edges but only in the summertime now.
I caught mine before it went bald. It was too short to grip. So I took Saw palmetto, rosemary oil, clove water, and dream girls hair supplements. As soon as I could I kept it braided. 🤷🏾♀️
Hey CynCyn, I believe the elders who greased their scalps regularly didn't get certain scalp and hair issues was because they washed their hair regularly. Thank you for the info.
I agree. When my crown was sore, I did some serious digging and realized when I washed my hair, I rarely focused on the crown area. They shampoo hit the area but rarely my fingers. Now I massage my hair a few times a week, and sometimes I use a hand held massager. The growth has definitely increased, and the soreness is almost non-existent
I knew it! I just knew that tying my scarf too tight was the reason for my edges breaking. I sleep like a fish out of water (flipping and flopping) and I thought tight = secure. 🤦🏿♀️ My edges paid the price.
U are so right my bonnet took all my edges lol, I realized what was causing my edges to thin & once i stop wearing my bonnet my edges grew back in no time
Thank you Cyn. My hair routine has Changed since I started watching your channel. I noticed every time I put oil on my scalp I get this blowout itchiness and tenderness. So stop and my scalp is doing well.
I was diagnosed with this and given a topical steroid as well as minoxidil. I use the topical minoxidil and changed my diet and I was slowly seeing results. Then I also started microneedling. I am definitely seeing new hair growth now. Then I got pregnant and the hair is filling in even more, but I am dreading postpartum shedding😫. Getting tight braids and oiling my scalp was definitely the culprit for me. I started braiding my own hair during the pandemic and i dont use oils and butters on my scalp and noticed a huge difference in my edges. Don't let these braiders slap all that let's jam on your scalp and braid it super tight. You will eventually regret it ladies. I'm hoping I can keep my edges after my baby this time. Thank you so much for spreading the word on these issues Cyn.💕
Hey Cyn. I’m also a licensed cosmetologist and hair loss specialist. I really appreciate this video because you are spot on with your info. I wish that we as black women would learn to love our own hair and choose healthier style options to avoid some of these issues
Sometimes Derms and labs will stereotype with their diagnosis. If you do not wear braids, weaves or get unhealthy relaxers ( not basing enough) and you’re still experiencing balding and scalp inflammation and you’re a black female, they may stereotypically diagnose your condition as CCCA or traction alopecia but in actuality could be an autoimmune disorder called Lichen Planopilaris. It is a condition physicians do not fully understand. It’s treated with Plaquenil, shots and other meds for severe hair loss.
@@ambrosia1917wwwooww !! I didn’t know they look the same under a microscope- I’m on Plaquenil & doing steroid shots one monthly & some other meds from derm
I went to dermatologist office maybe about 11 years ago. This white lady didn't know and didn't care about me the patient. She looked at my scalp and then left the room. She sent to nurse in with a note for me to buy Frizz Ease over the counter at the drug store. I should have complained to the medical society about her unprofessional behavior. I paid a lot money for a wasted visit. Thru looking at You Tube videos, I think it is CCCA. It got much worse over the years. I believe my biggest trigger was dietary issues and stress. I can remember losing my hair in my twenties. But, it would always grow back. This has recurred over and over in my life. About 5 years ago, I couldn't get rid of the itchy scalp. I ended up losing most up my hair in the mid section before I could find the right product to relieve the itching. The hair loss ended up extending to the sides of my head. So, nutrients are very important. It is growing very slowly. The top of my head is still mostly bald. So the hair follicles may be dead. I am in my sixties. So, please if you can see a good doctor that will at least look at your blood work to see what is going on. Some of my blood work was not good. The main causes when I was younger was stress. The hair would grow make on this own.
Folks please go see a Dermatologist. Dermatologists are uniquely suited to diagnose and treat LPP, CCCA or any skin problem compared to family doctors because they specialize in skin disorders. I’ll drop this in hopes of helping someone. Incorporated with a steroid oil for the scalp I was put on Nutrafol (the only product on the market so far backed by peer review). Since that time my hair has strengthened and Grown considerably. Nutrafol is expensive; however, if your physician deems it medically necessary with your insurance carrier they may give an authorization for approval of payment. This would include using your FSA or HSA account. It all depends on the benefits YOUR EMPLOYER purchased from the insurance company. A key takeaway is to address any disorder as soon as possible so you can better your odds at beating that thing. Just know your beautiful with or without hair. ❤
I used a steroid oil that made my scalp itch severely. Now that I have stopped my scalp is flaky like psoriasis. 3 months later and my scalp is still inflamed
@@AliveBlessedGrateful We are all different so what works for one may not for another. Also, sometimes we don’t give products enough time to work (not saying that’s you). My point was to go and see a dermatologist especially if your PCP has ruled out other things. There’s a fine line between having the ability to grow back hair and the inability to grow back hair. So again my advice was to see a professional and not loose time, giving your scalp the ability to scar. I’m no longer on Nutrafol because my hair is doing well on its own. Also, there are salons that deal in hair restoration. Don’t give up. My hair loss was a shock to my system so I know how it can feel when loosing hair. I wish you luck and I hope you find something that will work for you. Hang in there 💛.
Hi new studies out of Italy have shown that this is not CCCA. This study just came out. Go figure in this training I learned that black women have been diagnosed wrong. Also I seen some comments about bloodwork but it’s not just deficiencies in blood but we must look at tissues. Yes it begins with inflammation but we must look at what caused the inflammation and there is no cookie cutter answer everyone is different. GREAT VIDEO
Please keep studying. There are over 500 forms of alopecia. Studies are normal using 9-10 women in each study with very limited information from the test subjects. They make educated guesses to observe. I’ve had over 40k clients, this is ccca but there are hundreds of other forms. Keep learning.
I'm a Thalassemia carrier and it messes with my iron and ferritin. However, I've had black stylists do my hair wrong for 2 decades!! Now I have crown breakge. I think the follicles in that area are weak from the damage as I have aged.
I uave the same balding in the middle. I don't use heat or do braids or wigs, chemicals of any those things. I also don't have tight styles I think mine is due to stress as well as using "natural" products that are not suited to my hair and scalp. So I uave stopped all those homemade remedies and use those that have been tried and tested.
Yes follicle blockage with heavy products can limit oxygen flow causing follicle death. Look to your diet as well if tension is not the problem you may have a different form of alopecia. Video coming soon.
I'm a thalassemia carrier and I have mental health conditions which I have to take medication for. It's a triple whammy for my scalp. I no longer do DIY products either.
@@marleyhill34 Funny you should mention thalassemia. I have sickle cell and take medication for that. I never thought that too could be a cause of the balding. Thanks for sharing.
@@mariw1741 Yes unfortunately anything to do with your immunity and blood interferes with hair growth. That's why cancer patients lose their hair. the Chemo triggers an aggressive immune response which attacks your hair cells/follicles as well as the cancer cells. Hugs.😓 Ask on a sickle cell forum what they do, if there is anything that they can do.. One of my friends has a stomach that won't absorb enough nutrients so she is very thin but she said it's ruined her hair.
I thought I was tripping to be honest I listen to my hair I let my classmate braid my hair down she used a lot of gel after I had a itching sensation so I rinsed all the gel out my head and the itching stop and after that I told myself never again.
Shea butter which is low on the comedogenic scale and does not block the follicle. Find a Braider that doesn’t need any recommendations. Edge control is new women have braided for years before edge control was a thing.❤️
And do u feel like if my scalp is itching at all it’s always a form of Shedding or some type of Scalp problem ?? Do u think the Scalp will itch when it’s time to wash ??? Just asking because I’m trying to start paying attention to my hair to know when I should wash it and sometimes it slightly itches so maybe it’s my scalp saying simply wash me ?? Or u think it automatically means it’s something wrong … ? I should wash my hair and only do the condition and leave in conditioner and dry it and see if it itches in a couple days?? I currently have a quick weave in since march 14 but I haven’t added any more oils or anything … 😬
It would be interesting if you did a video about caring for your baby and children’s hair. I keep seeing videos of people braiding their child or babies hair when they barely have any hair and it’s making me think this is the beginning of alopecia.
Does scarring aleopia only happen in the middle of the scalp? I only have balding on the sides of my head and it's spreading towards the back. This has been a problem since I was about 9 and I'm 18 now. Is it to late for hair growth?
So I want to understand, please. Do you mean that grease and butters are bad OR they are only bad when in addition to using the grease and butters, we use tight scarves. So can we use the grease and butters if we don't tie our hair tight? PS: I didn't mention edge control and gels. I don't care for them so much. But you can still speak on them. Thank you.
Too bad Olaplex never worked for my hair. On another note it took me a long time to realize my hair loss is from BOTH stress & inflammation. So now I do steroids injections in my scalp and my muscle to slow down and hopefully stop the hair loss. In addition I use a steroid foam to my scalp.
Ok how do u feel about box braids or knotless braids ..? As long as we tell the braider to not put product on our scalp and not braid too tight or get them all the time it’s ok ?
I've had it for 6 years I believe, I'm 21 btw. I thought I may have had it and my dermatologist said I "looked fine," so I trusted her. I have two small patches with a thinning crown, the patches only ever start to inflame when my hair is too dry. I haven't used heat regularly for about 4-5 years. I only used heat heavily in 10th grade, then stopped shortly after. Most of my life has been one of natural hair care. These days my hair is only ever manipulated every two weeks and put in large plats after washing, and I mix castor oil and essential oils in my hair products with coconut and Olive oil for shine. Only today have a really considered this may be what I have. At first I thought it was eczema, so my original goal what to stop it from spreading from other parts of my body to my head since I had eczema already. The upside is again, I can minimize the spreading through moisturizing. Also, my crown has been showing progress of not itching or burning nearly as much as before since I've calmed down on the heat, and went for low maintenance care. I will be going to get a more serious check up soon.
I’m not trying to be rude but you are the problem. Your avoiding heat when heat is the least of your worries. I like how in depth you explained everything, and didnt give generic information. Im one of those women who doesnt wear wigs or weaves but my hair is back or tied up all the time, mainly due to depression. I just put on a knit cap, slick my edges, with a bonnet underneath to protect it from the cap. Done that for almost 3 years now & dont really wear my hair styled or out ever. Hair is tailbone length, but curls dont lay right anymore wven though my hair looks thick when straight, and no see through ends, & was starting to wonder if I need a thorough trim, or if there was thinning hidden inside somewhere. My scalp has been itching more too, but no flakes. I do have that gunk under my nail after wash day though that indicates buildup, when I wash my hair. I was literally wondering if sunlight needed to hit my scalp more like a plant or something lol, or was I working against my hair health by not letting airflow happen when Im out the house, by always weaing a cap and you addressed that! So thank you! But I was still a little confused. I listened all the way through, and heard a lot of preventative things, but I didnt hear what we could or should do for our scalp health. What do we do for the scalp? My scalp tends to be dry if I dont oil it. I actually went a few months without oiling and couldnt take it lol. I tried no oils and butter, but it was itchy, and flaked occassinally, and ny hair tangled at the roots badly. And I dont put conditioner or stylers on my scalp or anything, so it wasnt irritated or buildup. It was just dry. I assume in wash day the gunk is old oil, or my scalp needs to be exfoliated but Im not sure. Should we oil our hear with a bit of tea trea oil in it? Or we dont need to oil our scalp at all? I didnt hear you address this. You just said dont grease the scalp, but I thought oil was different. To my understanding, the scalp is like the face, and needs moisturizers & sealants as well. So I would mist my scalp with aloe juice or water, and lightly rub oil in my scalp. Is this wrong? How do we keep our scalps healthy & moisturized? Or we dont need to? Do you have a video about that? Im not trying to debate or saying any information is wrong. Just a little confused and wondering how we can take care of the scalp if things like acv and castor oil dont actually help prevent bacteria on the scalp or in the follicles. Is just shampooing enough to clean the scalp? Or should we shampoo more often? Like what actually helps prevent the bacteria & keeps our scalp clean as well as moisturized?
I use a pre-made scalp mist or a scalp gel that is water-based and not oil or butter or petroleum based. I use the one made by my trichologists or a store-bought one. Here is a store bought one: Eucerin DermoCapillaire Calming Urea Scalp Treatment- The first 5 ingredients are not oil or butter or petroleum based. This one is sold in Target: Pacifica Rosemary Split End and Scalp Treatment Serum. Instead of rosemary oil it has rosemary extract. Also shampoo every week.

@IamCynDoll I agree, Cyn But it was the constant direct heat at the crown of my head with plastic roller getting hot as heck biweekly that I think traumatized my scalp and got me. It was probably also a lot of other $hit I did to my scalp and hair trying to be a fly girl.
If it was hot enough to kill the follicle you would have scabs and blisters on the scalp. In that case it was a bad dryer not the style. It’s from something else love not the dryer.

Great question. Personally, I believe there are many reasons for Alopecia. The one thing all people regardless of color or culture have in common is Diet and Stress…. which causes INFLAMMATION, that also contributes to hair loss as well as other health conditions. I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder over 50 yrs ago. Recovered to normal health til my 60’s . And now in my mid 7O’s full blown OA. I started seeing slight changes in my hair texture and thickness in my late 50’s. Never thought much about it. Before 70 things began to change … So there are many contributing factors. Before 7-10 yrs ago I never even heard of this epidemic (and it is). Black women ore more stressed and do more damage to our hair than anyone I know. Back in the 60’s and 70’s there wasn’t all these topical things we put on our hair. Afro were just wash, oil and pick your hair out. Simple. And our diets were simple. People cooked real food. No GMO’s and all the process crap people eat now. It adds up.
oh yeah. I have a mental health condition and any time I get stressed patches appear in scalp...i don't know if I'm pulling it in my sleep or it's just from the pure stress. When the stress goes away, I only have thinning in the crown.
Please watch the video again I gave many causes you heard and addressed one without a full understanding. Hairstyling is the style and the products/chemicals are one and the same. It’s hairstyling and the chemicals needed to do the styling. Your dermatologist doesn’t know the exact causes because they don’t come into contact with it. Please go do more research and learn for yourself.

Great video
Skin is popping Cyn
Thanks so much lovely!!
I knew it! I just knew that tying my scarf too tight was the reason for my edges breaking. I sleep like a fish out of water (flipping and flopping) and I thought tight = secure. 🤦🏿♀️ My edges paid the price.
Yes when you know better you do better.
U are so right my bonnet took all my edges lol, I realized what was causing my edges to thin & once i stop wearing my bonnet my edges grew back in no time
I can’t keep a bonnet on my head. I just sleep with pillowcase. Also tight ponytails have wrecked havoc on my edges and the back.
And keep those tight braids out of your hair. They pull your hair out from the scalp and it will never grow back.
Not true love stop spreading and believing that. I will grow back and only tight braids damage the follicle.
Cyn your videos are gems
I appreciate you!
I'm a license stylist, you are wise and knowledgeable and yes immediately i had to remove my crochet in my tresses lol at 5 am 😅

Thank you Cyn. My hair routine has Changed since I started watching your channel. I noticed every time I put oil on my scalp I get this blowout itchiness and tenderness. So stop and my scalp is doing well.
You are so welcome❤❤❤❤!
This happened to me with coconut oil. I'm so glad I discovered this was the culprit. I never experienced that before....amazing!
Your hairline looks beautiful!
Thank you so much.❤️
When I see women trying to get their roots straight I always think they're cooking the root ball. Like frying chicken in oil, sebum being the oil.
Truth!!
Hey Cyn. I’m also a licensed cosmetologist and hair loss specialist. I really appreciate this video because you are spot on with your info. I wish that we as black women would learn to love our own hair and choose healthier style options to avoid some of these issues
Yes, black women don’t understand that hairstyles are for special occasions. Learning the human body is key not products.
It’s treated with Plaquenil, shots and other meds for severe hair loss.
yep! LP and CCCA look identical with a biopsy
Very true because I hadn’t had braids since I was a kid same with relaxers and starting losing hair 20 years later
@@ambrosia1917wwwooww !! I didn’t know they look the same under a microscope- I’m on Plaquenil & doing steroid shots one monthly & some other meds from derm
This happened to me!!! Turns out it was PCOS
Let me look into this. Just recently diagnosed with CCCA but I don’t wear braids or wear tight hairstyles.
Cyn suggest Rose Hydrosol. I'm using it along with Rosemary hydrosol and my scalp is loving both!! Keep glowing lady and health and blessings to you❤
AMEN!😌🙏💕
Thanks so much for watching!❤
I did to my hair everything you talked about and now I’m paying the price🤦🏾♀️

Nutrafol didn’t help me at all. I’m glad it helped you though.

@@IamCynDollI have it. I received injections and two prescription hair oils. I’m not sure if the bald spots will grow back. But my scalp feels better

Wig rub, rott from wearing eig on wet hair.wig glue ...main cause. And tight styles
My grandmother was bald in the top largely from wig rub. Would see her do it all day.
@@heywhatsthewordpodcastScratching your scalp by rubbing the wig across it. It's like erasing whatever little bit of hair that was under there.
I uave the same balding in the middle. I don't use heat or do braids or wigs, chemicals of any those things. I also don't have tight styles I think mine is due to stress as well as using "natural" products that are not suited to my hair and scalp. Yes follicle blockage with heavy products can limit oxygen flow causing follicle death. Look to your diet as well if tension is not the problem you may have a different form of alopecia. Video coming soon.

I thought I was tripping to be honest I listen to my hair I let my classmate braid my hair down she used a lot of gel after I had a itching sensation so I rinsed all the gel out my head and the itching stop and after that I told myself never again.
So, when I get my hair braided, what would you recommend the braided use instead of the gel?
Shea butter which is low on the comedogenic scale and does not block the follicle. Find a Braider that doesn’t need any recommendations. Edge control is new women have braided for years before edge control was a thing.❤️
@@IamCynDoll can you recommend a shea butter to use and thank you so much for getting back to me.

Scalp problem ?? Do u think the
Scalp will itch when it’s time to wash ??? Just asking because I’m trying to start paying attention to my hair to know when I should wash it and sometimes it slightly itches so maybe it’s my scalp saying simply wash me ?? Or u think it automatically means it’s something wrong … ? I should wash my hair and only do the condition and leave in conditioner and dry it and see if it itches in a couple days??
I currently have a quick weave in since march 14 but I haven’t added any more oils or anything … 😬

Can you do a video on loc care?
It would be interesting if you did a video about caring for your baby and children’s hair. I keep seeing videos of people braiding their child or babies hair when they barely have any hair and it’s making me think this is the beginning of alopecia.
What is the correct kind of bonnet to use

Does scarring aleopia only happen in the middle of the scalp? I only have balding on the sides of my head and it's spreading towards the back. This has been a problem since I was about 9 and I'm 18 now. Is it to late for hair growth?
No that’s Ccca. You have a different form of alopecia.❤️
@IamCynDoll Ok thank you❤️
So I want to understand, please.
Thank you.
Grease and butters are for the hair/ends not the scalp.
What do you think of doing mini twists? and also do you sleep on a satin pillowcase instead?
Yes I sleep on satin pillow cases. ❤️ mini twist aren’t my thing.

Too bad Olaplex never worked for my hair.
On another note it took me a long time to realize my hair loss is from BOTH stress & inflammation. So now I do steroids injections in my scalp and my muscle to slow down and hopefully stop the hair loss. In addition I use a steroid foam to my scalp.
you gave an example of the effects of tight scarves, does that apply to bonnets with elastic bands on the edges?
Yes absolutely if it’s the wrong type of bonnet.❤
Ok how do u feel about box braids or knotless braids ..? As long as we tell the braider to not put product on our scalp and not braid too tight or get them all the time it’s ok ?
They are fine as long as you find a Braider that can do it without packing the scalp full of edge control.
Nothing goes on the scalp but shampoo and your putting the worse of the worse on your scalp I have so many videos on it. Your apart of team natural and it’s killing your follicles.

I have seen all such color, women and men have this same issue that they don’t wear braids, explains that,
Great question. It adds up.
Can someone have thinning hair without follicle damage
Yes but there is still an issue that needs to be fixed within the body.

Medication can cause it, emotional trauma....
oh yeah. I have a mental health condition and any time I get stressed patches appear in scalp...i don't know if I'm pulling it in my sleep or it's just from the pure stress. When the stress goes away, I only have thinning in the crown.
My dermatologist says CCCA comes from relaxers and hair chemicals not styling.
