I discussed the rules with the kids and the punishment associated with it. Not every infraction deserves a whooping. When the kids broke the rules, I would remind them of the rule and the punishment and really make sure they understood why they were being punished and answer any questions they had or disputes about if the punishment was fair. If the punishment was a whooping, then I would get their acceptance and consent to beat their ass and they had to stand there and take it. No holding anyone down, no chasing anyone around the house with a belt - I will say that my sons were better at this than my daughter. LOL. No yelling and emphasizing words of anger. This might sound like a lot and maybe I overcompensated for my own chaotic childhood, but I have found that keeping the lines of communication open and building that trust has helped my relationship with my kids. They knew that I wouldn't take my anger and frustration out on them, ambush them randomly and would make sure the punishment fit the crime. Additionally, I will say that not having most rules that have an ass whooping as a punishment has pushed my creativity over the years. I've up with some memorable consequences for my kids that have had the impact of never dealing with that particular infraction again!

I was always one of those who just needed a stern talking to, but that won’t work with all kids, different kids need to be punished differently, as I’ve always been an easy child, I don’t remember ever actually being disciplined for anything, as I just stopped when I was told to stop.
