In one of those classic gross-out-the-viewer-with-food scenes from the 76th season of Doctor Who, the Eleventh Doctor gleefully goes to town on a pile of frozen fish fingers dipped in vanilla custard. Turns out this isn't that gross in real life; in fact, it serves as the inspiration for what I hope will be a fish fingers revolution. Probably not though.

Not really? I mean in the behind the scenes for the show, the fish fingers and custard just looked like it, the fingers were actually another dessert that looked like fish fingersl.
That radioactive yellow monstrosity Matt Smith was drinking looked more like Birds custard, which was a British staple in the 70s (and still is in some parts) and is definitely not vanilla-flavoured. None of us even know what flavour it is. It’s...custard.

Apparently on set, they weren’t even fish fingers. They were small cakes made to look like fish fingers.

Years and years back my very Scottish gf made fish fingers and custard with Birds and it was that exact shade of yellow, also it tasted like no other food ever.

I remembered reading somewhere that Matt Smith revealed that it wasn't really fish fingers he ate in that scene, rather it was some sort of bread with sweetened coconut filling inside

I think the 'breadcrumb' coating on the outside was the coconut part, like shredded desiccated coconut that's been toasted or dyed.
I feel pretty confident Moffat only put that line in to see if he could make people unironically eat it.

i grew up on doctor who, so of course when matt smith ate fish fingers and custard i decided i wanted to try it. my mom came up with fish sticks and a homemade lemon custard and honestly? it kinda slaps
I remember having fish fingers and custard while I was watching the 50th Anniversary special air 😂 It was years ago so I can't remember if we were actually able to get custard or not...But I don't like fish so it wasn't very enjoyable

Warm Custard is what I expect as well really... And the American Vanilla custard doesn't taste the same at all. There is a HUGE different between the two.

@@yaboi9419 as an American, no, it really isn’t. Custard/pudding and ice cream are completely different. We have a few custard based ice creams, but in no way is it practically the same.
Picture this: You're 14 convincing your black mom to go to various stores to find an ingredient she's never heard of until you're whispering custard in her sleep, just to finally find it and make the dish you've been so keen to try, and its absolutely terrible, but because you've caused such a hoopla about it, Mom demands to finish all the custard. You say this like Ten's first episode didn't include him quoting The Lion King by accident and then swordfighting a Sycorax leader, or Twelve's first line wasn't about how he didn't like the color of his kidneys.
Matt Smith is a underrated actor and for me the best of the new doctors

Smith and tennant were the peak of doctor who. Easily my two favourites, plus tennant had the saddest end to his run.

This is the weirdest cosmic coincidence I’ve had in a while. Haven’t watched Dr. Who in like 5 years and I randomly rewatched some of the doctor switching episodes last night and then this video gets released the next day.

This combo kinda reminds me of the time I was introduced to dipping french fries into melted ice cream. My roommate brought us to McDonalds for lunch and I saw him dipping his fries into his ice cream. Thought he was insane until he told me to try it. What a discovery that was.

At heart a custard and a mayo are really similar and the iconic fish condiment is mayo based tartar sauce , so I expected something really tasty to appear.

Half the UK just had a quiet, polite Brit-gasm over this episode.
However, you do need the right brands of both fish fingers and custard. Having already tried this with several different brands, the difference is massive.
What would you say is the best brand combo?
Your comment makes it seem like this is a normal thing to eat in the UK, I want to assure everyone this was only made up for Doctor Who. The UK already has enough of an undeserved reputation for having "bad food" without people thinking we actually eat this.
@@howardatkinson9789 Well, I quite like Young's fish stuff and several Cornish cream based custards. The 'typical' Brit brands would be Birdseye fish fingers and Birds custard, but really it's about finding brands you personally prefer and combining them. I'd suggest staying away from the cheap stuff, either way.

Incidentally, custard has been both a sweet and a savoury food preparation for many hundreds of years in many dishes that are still popular today (quiche, bobotie, moussaka), and there are written English recipes for fish custard in cookbooks dating back to the 1600s... so I, and history itself, both assure you it was not only made up for TV.

I'm grateful he had the same opinion I did when I and my Whovian pals tried actual fishfingers and custard. "surprisingly inoffensive" was our opinion as well. i like both a lot honestly, they are pretty equal to me but Tennent def got the better companions like Rose and Captain Jack, i liked amy and rory but clara not so much lol

@@gregjones4035 Probably not the same as in the US... Fish Fingers in the UK are usually decent cuts of fillet fish, while fish sticks are pretty much reconstituted from whatever they swept up off the floor of the crab-shelling warehouse next door.

My mum craved this for the entirety of her pregnancy with my little sister. She always got sad when she saw other people's reactions to it, sooo I ate it a few times to make her feel better. Combination ALWAYS made me throw up. Now we know i'm allergic to fish:-) Poor mum.

Babish, That particular episode of Dr. Who has a special place near my heart. My daughter and I used to watch it over and over when she was a kid. She's grown up now, but next time she's in town, I'm totally making this. Yay!
There should be a sequel to this. In a later episode (The Power of Three, I believe) the Doctor says that fish fingers and custard inspired him to invent Yorkshire pudding.
I’ve made fish fingers/fish sticks like this, and my family absolutely loved it. I made a normal tartar sauce instead of the “savory crème anglaise”, but still it was delicious. The batter skin was so crisp that even I was surprised.

Babish is the kind of madlad that takes the plunge to try custard and fishsticks, say "this doesn't taste that bad together" and then FURTHER say "I can work with this" and make something truly special.
