    In one of those classic gross-out-the-viewer-with-food scenes from the 76th season of Doctor Who, the Eleventh Doctor gleefully goes to town on a pile of frozen fish fingers dipped in vanilla custard. Turns out this isn't that gross in real life; in fact, it serves as the inspiration for what I hope will be a fish fingers revolution. Probably not though.

      Not really? I mean in the behind the scenes for the show, the fish fingers and custard just looked like it, the fingers were actually another dessert that looked like fish fingersl.

    That radioactive yellow monstrosity Matt Smith was drinking looked more like Birds custard, which was a British staple in the 70s (and still is in some parts) and is definitely not vanilla-flavoured. None of us even know what flavour it is. It’s...custard.

      Years and years back my very Scottish gf made fish fingers and custard with Birds and it was that exact shade of yellow, also it tasted like no other food ever.

      I think the 'breadcrumb' coating on the outside was the coconut part, like shredded desiccated coconut that's been toasted or dyed.

    i grew up on doctor who, so of course when matt smith ate fish fingers and custard i decided i wanted to try it. my mom came up with fish sticks and a homemade lemon custard and honestly? it kinda slaps

      I remember having fish fingers and custard while I was watching the 50th Anniversary special air 😂 It was years ago so I can't remember if we were actually able to get custard or not...But I don't like fish so it wasn't very enjoyable

      Warm Custard is what I expect as well really... And the American Vanilla custard doesn't taste the same at all. There is a HUGE different between the two.

      @@yaboi9419 as an American, no, it really isn’t. Custard/pudding and ice cream are completely different. We have a few custard based ice creams, but in no way is it practically the same.

    This combo kinda reminds me of the time I was introduced to dipping french fries into melted ice cream. My roommate brought us to McDonalds for lunch and I saw him dipping his fries into his ice cream. Thought he was insane until he told me to try it. What a discovery that was.

      @@howardatkinson9789 Well, I quite like Young's fish stuff and several Cornish cream based custards. The 'typical' Brit brands would be Birdseye fish fingers and Birds custard, but really it's about finding brands you personally prefer and combining them. I'd suggest staying away from the cheap stuff, either way.

      Incidentally, custard has been both a sweet and a savoury food preparation for many hundreds of years in many dishes that are still popular today (quiche, bobotie, moussaka), and there are written English recipes for fish custard in cookbooks dating back to the 1600s... so I, and history itself, both assure you it was not only made up for TV.

      @@gregjones4035 Probably not the same as in the US... Fish Fingers in the UK are usually decent cuts of fillet fish, while fish sticks are pretty much reconstituted from whatever they swept up off the floor of the crab-shelling warehouse next door.

    I’ve made fish fingers/fish sticks like this, and my family absolutely loved it. I made a normal tartar sauce instead of the “savory crème anglaise”, but still it was delicious. The batter skin was so crisp that even I was surprised.

    I was still in school when this episode aired and on fridays the school served fish fingers and you could also get custard with desert so me and some friends actually tried fish fingers and custard and we quite liked it
