Beginner Editor on Adobe Premiere VS. Pro on iMovie - Video Editing Showdown!

  • In this video, we're putting the beginner editor on Adobe Premiere against the pro on iMovie in a video editing showdown! Find out which software comes out on top and which one is best for you.
    In this challenge, they both edit footage shot by Landon for a fan-made commercial for Ghost Longboard. With no creative upper hand, they each have two hours to transform this footage into a compelling story. Josh, a three-month Premiere Pro user, and Jake, revisiting iMovie after years, face off to showcase their editing skills.
    The results are fascinating! Landon critiques both edits, discussing aspects like pacing, frame rate, color grading, and sound design. While Josh's slower-paced, technically sound edit impresses, Jake's iMovie creation brings an immersive, fast-paced vibe with impressive sound design, winning Landon's favor as the ideal choice for engaging social media content.
    In conclusion, this challenge highlights the importance of skills over gear. Full-time Filmmaker emphasizes this ethos, offering a course to excel in filmmaking with any equipment.

    • @FraserSouris
      @FraserSouris Před 2 lety +5

      Eh, somewhat. The context of the video is similar enough that both iMovie and Premier can engage with it well. It's like asking someone with a bike and someone with a car to go a few blocks away to a grocery store and bring back some milk and seeing how fast both take. In that test, both don't really much have that much of an advantage over the other. But if the test was something like 1 street away or like a huge distance away, then the tool would really outshine the skill of the user.
      In the same way, if you were asked to quickly edit some clips together, iMovie would do that faster and easier. If you were asked to do a series of complicated shots with effects like colour correction, green screen, multiple layers of images and audio, then Premier would shine since iMovie can't do that kind of stuff (aside from just 1 later of green screen).

    The most major issue i found with Joshs edit was that despite him having done a color grade, it didnt look like it had been done. Mainly because the main subjects of the film were almost always merging with the background so often times i didnt know what i was supposed to focus on. However Jake (despite having only the basic tools of imovie at his disposal) tackled this problem very well. In every frame my eye is immediately drawn to the characters instead of going anywhere else.

    @Turtledud3 Před 3 lety +12

    I just made a roughly 30-hour long video in iMovie. I had to bust it up into 3 parts to get it onto CZcams under this channel. I did the entire thing in iMovie on a lightweight Macbook Air. If you want to know what that did to the video and how it turned out, continue reading. This way you can see what the final product on a serious attempt from somebody who is a total beginner at all video editing.
    Before we get into this, I have a very limited budget and basically no tools to video edit except iMovie. That is why I used it.
    I knew very little to none going into this project about how to use iMovie. I basically could get things into the timeline and bump them up against each other. I did not even know how to add transitions between the video clips when I started. I learned a ton along the way.
    This thing is in fact 30 hours long. It is actually just shy of 30 hours at 29 hours and 40 some minutes. It ended up being just under 100GB in file size at around 98.5GB. (And that was only at 720p. I decided not to push my luck too far. 1080p would have been 300+GB for the record.) For context, it is an entire playthrough, from start to finish, of a video game called The Last of Us Part II, although that is not important to the comment. Just know that it is so long because I wanted to include everything for the whole experience, not the edited down version that a ton of other creators had made already.
    iMovie handled the entirety of the 30 hours of video amazingly well while editing. It did not lag. It starts up quickly and loads the videos into the timeline in under 15 seconds or so despite the extensive video. It did not matter if I was set up for editing 1080p or 720p as it seems iMovie treats the video file at its best possible quality while editing and reduces it only when you export. However, I should note that I wasn't looking for much editing such as color correction or grading, sound editing, or anything in that regard. I was mainly using it to seamlessly stitch together a ton of shorter clips into one massive video. For this, I had absolutely no troubles once I learned a few tricks on how to zoom in on the timeline and whatnot for more accurate trimming. So editing went great.
    Later on, I discovered that iMovie cannot currently export more than 24 hours worth of footage. It collects the time past 24 hours and only uses that amount of time from the start of the video. For example, a video is 26 hours long. It will only export the first 2 hours of your video. If it is 28 hours long, the first 4 hours will be exported. Anything up to 23 hours and 59 minutes will ~theoretically~ be fine.
    I say theoretically because I was having an extremely difficult time even getting this long of a video exported. iMovie can only handle exporting maybe 7 hours of video without hanging indefinitely, at least on my computer. This is where iMovie is extremely lacking in my experience. In fact, 7 hours was really pushing it.
    After multiple weeks of head scratching and countless failed attempts at exports, I, at last, got everything out of iMovie by breaking them down into sections of 2-4 hours of video. From there, I tried a ton of apps to recombine them post export. None of them worked. Anything over 24 hours crashes every program (not my computer, the program itself stops responding or hangs indefinitely). Then I found that QuickTime Player can be used to recombine all the individual clips. I gave it a shot. QuickTime Player amazingly pulled it off but deleted the audio due to the .mov file format. It actually did not delete the audio, only made it unusable. I know this as a long time later I compressed the file using an open source app called HandBrake into a .mp4 file for CZcams and the sound showed back up. So, apparently, .mov format, which iMovie uses by default, has issues with sound over a certain time.
    So, to summarize, if you ignore the limited timing on the export of files, you can edit in iMovie even with massive files without trouble. The export is what gets you. Now, if you are editing a normal length video of around an hour or less, then iMovie should do you just fine.
    There was also a very frustrating issue with uploading to CZcams, but that does not matter for this comment. Just know I did succeed in getting them up on CZcams at 720p. (CZcams wouldn't accept any larger quality due to file size.) You can find all three of them on my channel named as "The Last of Us Part II Survival + Complete Playthrough Part #" Where the # is 1, 2, or 3 with respect to chronological time. If you want to check that out, head on over.

    The first would be based on engagement which the iMovie is better for.

    I personally prefer the Premiere Pro version because it's visually pleasing and keeps my attention on the skateboards which is what you are trying to sell, I know what a skateboard sounds like and I know what traffic sounds like but if I went skateboarding it would be for the joy and enjoying the environment
