The often forgotten P4 pistol in the P38 family is another iterative step in development towards the end of the P38 family. Only the P5 and P5 compact would come after and the P4 certainly filled a niche in the police and border guard forces of Germany at the time. Not many were made and there are only a few significant changes from the P1 pistol that came before it.
Despite that, it is an uncommon pistol and is commonly mistaken for a regular P38 or P1. Closer inspection reveals its true nature but it is in every way just as good and reliable as a P1 and even product improved but not quite to the level that the P5 was. A transitionary pistol it nonetheless deserves mention in such a legendary family of German pistols.

Due to life and its financial difficulties, I will never own a collection of Walthers like you have. Thanks to you, I now know a lot more about a series of guns that have always fascinated me. Thank you, Merry Christmas and have an awesome New Year ‼️

Late production (late 1970s) P1s also have the same white bar and dot sights.

Cool, man. Not a lot out there on the P4. I guess I'm kinda doing the P38 family backwards, too--I've got a P5. Need to get a P1 or P4. Interesting to hear your thoughts on how it compares to the P5, as far as shooting; I shoot my P5 as well as anything. Would be interested to see how the more traditional P38 layout stacks up to the P5 design.

Bobbed hammer….different slide serrations….widened wings at tail of slide for cocking…..frame strength is better. Good video….find a Manurhin…..great shooters!
