You’ve heard my tips, what do you think helps make a successful group ride???
My biggest problem with group rides comes down to those riders that can't stay in formation. Some can't maintain that 2 second spacing, some can't comprehend the concept of staggered riding.
Hope you have a great ride. I'd love to make it, but I'm on a fixed income and just can't swing it.
I hate when doing a gas an go stop and someone goes wondering around the gas station for 30 or more minutes.
I'm so mad I cant go. What a great ride this will be!
The hardest part of a good group ride is fatigue. Formation riding does take a little concentration.
Riders who have been riding for years, pride won't let them learn. So they can't stay in line, can't keep a pace, see sawing all over and paddle footing off intersections, but they're riding pros. And yes, fuel stops, the more bikes and passengers the worse it gets, they wait to fill, then go into pay and buy everything from water to tampons. And bathrooms, there will be a line every stop... Big lines of bikes look great, but I'd rather one or two friends who I know can ride and I trust completely.
John, I think that it's a great thing you're doing for Adam and our vets. This activity of yours will surely increase the number of riders for the event. Thank you.
Bro, this was the best & most important vlog I found anywhere; should be a must watch before a long road trip. So many great nuggets you shared, not to mention, I could go on for hours over Don’t & Do’s on a road trip. In addition to making sure your bike is healthy... items of interest, non-negotiable, I’ve learned the hard way, with guys not getting invited out on a second road trip:
1) Know your invitees well. Make sure the “kitchen Pass” they got from the wife to travel, has NO contingencies.... like calling and texting your wife every time we stop for gas.... like committing to your wife we will arrive our hotel room each night at a certain time, followed by a 45 minute call to de-brief her on every moment of riding 500 miles.... save that so you have something to share when you get home!
2) We fill up the night before we leave. Non-negotiable. Nothing worse, getting all geared up in the morning, riding 3 minutes to a gas station to stop and fuel.
3) If possible, we all crash at my house the night before, talk thru our trip, and leave together at 5:30am, so we find light traffic early, and we shut it down before dark... 3-3:30pm. We enjoy a few adult beverages then, along with a nice dinner, and a good nights sleep. If we have a short days ride ahead, 350 miles or less, nothing wrong with sleeping in, have a big breakfast, and be on the road by 9-10am. 450-600+ mile day ahead, we leave at 5:30am.
4) We leave together and on time; we wait for nobody. You get left, if you can’t manage your time, holding everyone else up. So either stay home once you’re left behind, or ride like heck to come catch up. You will learn to show up on time next time, if there’s a next time for you.
5) We don’t whine, and cry about the weather; if you ride, you’re gonna have weather. Man up. No sniffles over “my butt is numb”...”my back is stiff”.
6) Stupid riding, ill-advised passing, passing our own crew, riding at speed beyond common sense, gets you placed on the Non-Invite List permanently for future trips.
7) When we pull in to top off our gas tanks, we all top off, regardless of what your gas gauge says. We fill up just before we check in to our hotel, so we’re full when we roll in the morning.
8) Partner with somebody to take turns sharing a gas pump. It’s quicker, more efficient than a group of guys all trying to find “their own” gas pump, or waiting in line. Fill up, then pull out from the pumps to a clearing so we can all roll off together.
9) Stay hydrated, pound water all day.
10) “You never know someone until you’ve traveled with them”. Planning the trip in advance is half the fun. The stops along the way, the photo-ops, our chatter, the evenings out to dinner each night, is a great bonding time with your peeps. If you must check in at home each night, make that quick call home, while your buddy is in the shower getting ready to go to dinner. Vice versa. When buddy #2 hits the shower, buddy #1 make your call home. Nothing worse than a few guys ready to leave the hotel for dinner or a night on the town, but we’re waiting on one lonesome loser to get off his phone call to home or putting fires out over the phone. Additionally, texting the wife or girlfriends while we’re out to have a good time, lands you on the Non-Invite List too, so next time you can stay home with your gal, watching sitcoms together.
Sounds pretty juvenile, but some of your best buddies are not good traveling partners. My 10 items interest, are all supported by some stories I could tell. LOL, Best of buddies, but by the end of the trip, you want to knock them out. It takes a few trips to identify WHO can really ride on the same page with you, and who you leave home to preserve a friendship. Lol
Riding with people you've known for a long time. Being spontaneous and making stops along the way. Don't make a plan it takes the fun out of it!
Rats! I was thinking, why worry about that oil light, I'll just get John to fix it on the way out to Texas!"
Yea, dont think that will work now.
Yes!!! You covered the big 3:
1) Bike maintenance BEFORE your trip.
2) Try out any new gear BEFORE your trip - make sure it works for you & what you're using it for.
3) No alcohol before or during a ride. The ride is intoxicating enough!
The only thing I'd add is to bring your Rain Gear -if you're cold, even if it's not raining, you can put on your rain gear to keep you warm (because water proof = wind proof). And, if you do see rain clouds on the horizon, and you put on all your rain gear, SOMETIMES it'll actually do it's job -which is keep the rain away all together. ✌
Why stop and pay cash for tolls and wait in line ? Either get a multi-state epass type reader for your bike (there are plenty) or just ride right through the toll; most states just bill the tag now via mail(no fine) with a very small admin fee (and in Florida a nice picture of you on your bike to boot!)...
I forgot my tag and went through a toll recently. Originally would have been 1 dollar now with the admin fee of 30 bucks its $31.00. Very steep in my opinion but I did get a sweet picture of me going through the booth.
Demetrios W you can fight that and claim it didn’t read your tag. As long as the plates are registered it doesn’t matter. I never carry my ezpass and just claim it’s not read whenever they attempt to charge extra
@@raghnor2614 Actually it was my first trip on a new bike that I needed ezpass on so new bike plates weren't on file. Was my fault but don't get new bike often :). Plates on file now
@@snipexd4964 Only like 25 cents extra/admin fee here in Florida that sucks! Best option get a pizza box (tour pack) hide tag and get free tolls for life...
We are riding down from Iowa, have a safe trip and hope to see you there.
Where in Iowa bro? I-29 north of Council Bluffs totally closed, flooded out.
@@DeBa1226 I'm in between Davenport and Iowa City so I should have good roads. Not sure about the route yet but maybe taking I80 to Des Moines the heading down I35
I would recommend using Gaffer's Tape to wrap each joint on your 360 selfie pole. Wrap in the direction that you would turn it to tighten each joint so that it does not vibrate loose and come down. I would put a small piece over the memory card slot to minimize dust and moisture entering there. Also, ove the record button and mode button but, color a spot in the tape so you can easily see the button position when needed. It will help with moisture not entering there as well unless you have the waterproof case. I would wrap the base of the camera to the pole so that it does not vibrate loose as well. Safe than sorry kind of thing. Gaffer's Tape doesn't mar or leave adhesive traces. It can be bought in Guitar Center, camera stores, and on-line. Good luck on the ride! And don't forget to leash the camera! Lol!
Since you asked...I like to use to power of the group. One guy can take battery charger. One takes air compressor for tires, one tool kit etc. Designate gathering points along the way in case the group breaks up. Baggers to the back of the pack makes a slight improvement to road visibility ahead. See y’all at Bring It Home.
Happy to see you're trying a handlebar mount instead of the suction cup on the shield buddy! What about a Velcro strap wrapped around the stick and handlebars to keep stick from moving back towards you? (I carry a small roll of Velcro on my bike.)
As I mentioned last post, it's like hearding cats leading a group ride and it's great that you're putting in some "ground rules". Start with a "full tank empty bladder"!!! Probably the only way to get lunch with that big group will be fast food and give everyone a time for "kick stands up!"
Good luck,
Ocala Fl.
Have seen money blowing down the line between the bike rows, seen water bottles and cigarettes, my favorite was a foot peg, bouncing along down the road between the two bike rows and disappearing into the distance.
Thanks for the tips John. How about a companion video on packing for a multi day trip? I'm interested in seeing how you pack your bike. Thanks and keep them coming
I'm sitting here watching your cool video and it's warmed up outside to 33 deg F. Really liking the sounds, green grass etc. Thanks for posting.
Go over the hand signals with everyone before leaving, ask everyone if they have a full tank and is their stuff squared away. Having CB radios or Cardo/Sena communicators is really a bonus. Establish a tail gunner to run sweep. If someone has a problem, the group continues and the tail gunner stays with the rider who’s had to stop. This is really where CB radios come into play. The leader (you) and the tail gunner can communicate as to wtf is going on and adjust. Safe travels, set the record.
Have a great safe ride
Love your videos John. Keepem comin
Get EasyPass transponder in your riding jacket. My time is too valuable to stop to fumble with tolls.
You the man John...good video, I'll see ya at Paris HD when we bring the record home. Keep it safe, see ya there 🤙🇺🇸
Sounds like a blast! Wish I could make it--the road tips about safety are great!
Here's a tip for your 360. Glue sandpaper to the contact surfaces, grit facing grit. Another shim may not hurt for the fastener, either. For telescopes, throw a couple (four or more) wraps of elec. tape, (your a tech, ain'cha?) at the bottom of each extension. Keep it, between 'em...
Man, after all these years …….. I always thought the shaky left foot, shaky right foot thing was doing the motorbikel hokey pokey. Learn something new every day. Thanks John !!
Hope you guys are having a fantastic and safe ride
Fix for your mount.
Double sided tape wrapped around the handlebar then add your 360 cam mount.
I use 3m double sided foam tape stuff. Got it at an auto parts store. Mount stays right where I put it and no longer spins or droops down.
Hey John. Check out this mount on Amazon. I have 4 and I think they work pretty good. I don't really know how to give you a direct link but it's called "EXSHOW bike camera mount".
Really nice mount and very adjustable.
The THRASHER Vest looks good on ya, John! Ride safe 🤘🏼
You're so right. I took a trip last month and half way through I had to stop at Laconia Harley-Davidson for new tires and rear brakes
Wish I had found this before 12:30 AM Oct 7th, would have been a fun time to ride along with my Better Half on the back, since the baby is with her Aunt BB for the weekend, I don't get to ride as much since she came along, but hey, the trade off makes it worth it! Would have been a great ride I think and an opportunity to make new acquaintances and meet some new people along the way.
Wish I could attend. Work calls. I would try and mount that "stick" lower and use an additional "mount" like a wire tie and if you need space for angle build up that space with tape or something sturdy. I hope everyone has a great time out there and Bring It Home. Everyone be safe, have good times and get home safe for the next ride!! Looking forward to a lot of video of the ride and the event.
Three clamps run the stick along your handle bars. It should be the same shape as your bars and clamps should have as much space as possible between clamps. NO SCRATCHES PLEASE!!! I bet the man in the video could make a better mount than he can buy. Or modify a store bought stick. All his clips are a treasure trove of must know info, especially for those of us that have to do a lot of stuff ourselves. Shop rates in Canada are killer expensive. Great vid as always Mr Maxwell!!!!
Great tips and used the gas stop one before with buddies.
For your camera try a mount straight up windshield so you have some support but can still reach.
Keep rubber side down!
Hooorah
Love the vids man. While I understand the stagger form, I was surpeised you didn't mention that confident packs are bar to bar.
Your group ride tips are right on the money... I hope your ride goes exceptionally well and alot of riders show up....ride safe brother!!
Hey John great group advice. Just done a group ride at the HOG rally in Johnson City. The two guys in front of me swapped positions so many times they kept the line screwed up. No use of hand or leg signals. A talk with your HOG chapter should be able to give you some more advice. Just saying.
Stay safe chrome(or black) up and rubber side down
Hey hey Johnson City. Gray here. I wasnt able to make it to the big ride. Work takes all my fun.
Keep up, stay up, be happy 🤘
Another Great informative video John. Thanks Brother 👍 ! Robert L Kerns-Columbus GA 😎
When going through a toll, the first bike pays for everyone. It make the process much faster.
No one will want to be the 1st bike. Lol just kidding. I think that would work for 10 bikes but he may have alot more than that.
we usually send out a pair of bikes in both directions at an intersection, they make u turns and ride back to the intersection slowly, Legally they are not blockers, they are simply slowing traffic behind them and being nice allowing the traffic from the side road (the group), out. then as the last bike exits the road the two facing the wrong way make a u turn and fall in, the other two protect that move before falling in. We've done it in front of Cops and have never had an issue.
I quit doing group rides years ago because I found that if you were in a group, you put yourself at the mercy of the others in the group. You know, the ones who need a smoke every 20 minutes, stop to check out every road side sign for points of interest, have a weak bladder or can't ride to save their life. The worst case was a bunch who wanted to stop and check out a bear with 2 cubs. They found out very quickly the bear didn't like the noise from the bikes and charged......... I ride alone. I make good time and get where I am going.
I swapped out all of my GoPro mounts from the OEM plastic mounts to aftermarket all aluminum mounts. Much more stable and the mounts can be tightened down solid. Some even come with a small spanner type wrench to really torque down the mounts. You're probably already aware, but just thought I would throw it out there. I hate having to constantly fidget with the camera while riding.
I know they exist, but you have quite a sales approach. I’ll look into those!
Great video as always. Wish I could go on this record breaking ride. Too far from Upstate NY to ride it. No trailer. Not enough vacation time. Have a great trip, a safe trip and bring it home. 👍
gym shoe is that a serious question? Lol
Discuss who will be stopping or not stopping when a group is going thru a stop sign. Here we can all go thru once the group has come to a complete stop and traffic sees you. However there’s always one who refuses to do it. It usually almost causes a wreck. And the most fun part is you can’t talk them out of doing it EVERY time. So identify that person before you go so they can ride in the rear.
on the 360 cam issue i would try a ziptie holding it to the handle bar to keep it from falling
Strap tie the camera stick to your left handlebar or maybe use velcro straps.
Michael Craughan Nice pic, Chief!
Wrap the upright part of your bars with a 6" long and "however wide you need it to cover the whole bar" piece of leather or other soft material, buy a bag of zip ties "or get them from work" lol, zip tie the lower shaft of the 360 rig in 2 spots. It'll never move on you. I'm sure the extension rotates so you can move it if need be? keep a small pair of dike's in your pocket and clip the ties if you want to remove it. Just a suggestion dude...Have a great safe ride!!
Put a little piece of skateboard grip tape on your handlebar where you want the mount. it's black, so you'll hardly notice it, and it'll help keep that mount from slipping.
When or if you ride the Indian Nation Pkwy, (pay as you go road) from Tulsa OK, you will have to pay 3 times. Also their is gas stop, bout half way. (Give or take 10 miles) they really like quarters. When you get to the campground. They have good food available, and when you want a beer, prices are very good. Rather cheap. Using SD standards. Great place.
Ride the paint when going thru automated toll areas. Cameras generally can't pick up your tag number.
I'd rather ride alone however enjoy the company of 3 or 4 riding buddies that are professional and that I have ridden with for years. I expect to be told if I do something stupid or considered unsafe by the others and I reciprocate. I don't care about hurt feelings, it's about getting home safe and sound each and every time.
Pick 1 guy for group of 8-10+ to pay for that day or whole trip.
Sit there with notepad and writes name and total after each person.
Later when there’s time.
Do the math and check up at end of trip.
2 situations at stop sign.
Heavy traffic get out when you can. 1-3 at a time and just ride slow till the rest catch up. Cars will go around.
Last 3-5 bikes watch mirror for last guy and waves through the group lets go.
Moderate traffic same instance but you may wait till after that car till a bigger opening and wave and put up 2 or 3 before you go to give everyone notice we’re moving after that many cars.
Always glance at mirror half to a mile. That person fell back. Slow up a little to help them catch up.
Slowing 2-5 mph doesn’t slow your whole group but makes a huge difference for the back.
Point to ground for object on ground. I don’t notice feet moving.
I’m usually shaking my feet just for stretching.
The others. Everyone should know basic common send hand signals.
Point at tank. Need gas.
Hand to mouth. Food but you should have ate back then.
Constantly looking at bike and wave at exit.
Bike problem. If they wave you on while getting off. They’ll catch up.
There is a shortcut/bypass from Paris H-D to Hugo to the Campground with no toll! Same time and more scenic... JMO
Good to know! I’ve only been once, and followed Adam.
@@TheHarleyTech , If I can escape the dealership when you head to K River, I'll ride with ya. I'll probably be busy here though selling bikes. See ya in a few days!
Great group tips. Ride safe see you in Paris
Good info man. I'm Riding solo up there for the Ride and them making my way to Florida and Back to Texas. Look forward to seeing you there.
Move your mount further down you handle bars, then use a velcro strap to hold it in place higher up on your handle bars bro. all good tips for a group ride, especially at the gas station, that makes total sense. Drinking beer and riding,is just stupid, don't do it folks. Go find the Duck Commander boys in Monroe lol.
Looks good ., just need to toon the mount !
John, Excellent information for people in Group Rides.
Like the group ride info thanks
Thanks for the tips ... see you in Texarkana 👍🏼 on Friday the 4th.
Hey man, we use an app called Splitter on our iPhones to log expenses and afterwards settle payments, very useful for gas stations and/or tolls
You might have to get a heavy duty monopod its bending quite a bit on the highway. I would also consider a gopro official handlebar mount or a metal mount with rubber inserts to help keep it in place. There are a few 1/4 20 handlebar mounts on Amazon but cant verify the quality.
Try wrapping the part you tighten with teflon tape. That may help.
Great video. Have a safe and fun trip.
Looks like you are on your game John. I wonder if or how many group rides you've been on that went wrong. I've been on a number of group rides and its happened everytime. I'll either ride solo or two three bikes now. Get your camera stick figured out and good luck with the ride. Stay safe.
Put a velcro strap on it to help keep it in place.
Unfortunately, I am not going to make the ride this year. Too many things going on this year in my life. Best wishes and I will continue to watch the videos leading up to the Bring it Home ride. And future videos afterwards.
See you at Paris HD OCT 5th … Enjoyed the video …. Looking forward to the video of the whole thing ! bsafe !
Good advise, Great Video, that stick seems more problematic than needed. Hopefully you can get it figured out.I am probably NOT going to be able to go, still trying to get work taken care of, if I can get that hurdle figured, I'll be there, if not...it's gonna suck to be me :(
I'm not really into group rides. I enjoy my solo trips, have no particular need for companionship, and am quite self sufficient despite traveling light. I like being able to keep going as long as I choose, and when I have a destination, I don't like to dawdle. I did 1700 miles in around 28 hours on my last trip. On a sport bike... I don't even really consider it a "trip" if I can do it without lubing my chain multiple times, but I still don't like to stop before I get where I'm going. Next summer, I plan to ride coast to coast in around 3 days, stopping to camp for a night in Colorado before riding on to Oregon. I'll stop whenever I want, for as long as I want, but I'm generally pretty driven to carry on until I get to where I'm going. Quite often, I don't even get off the bike at fuel stops. Most people I might ride with would just hold me up. It's me, not you. I think I may have psychological issues.
You can make a nice riding vest by getting an old or new Levi's jacket and cutting off the sleeves.
@@aliceshaw8265 so what
Have you thought about mounting the camera on a sissy bar?
Zip ties
Duck tape
Bailing wire
Fixes everything!
Also, did you ever get to do a test ride/video that S1000RR that was in the shop!?!?
In August my whole group was delayed 3 hours one morning at a hotel parking lot when my Road Glide ignition popped out. 280 miles from the nearest dealer. Eventually we found the perfect size screw driver so I could line up the cigs and get it back in service. REALLY SUCKS!
Use your suction cup on the inside of your windshield then you can grab it.
9:46 When pointing out a hazard on your left, the proper signal is pointing with your left hand
@Earl James John was referring to the MSF standards and those say left hand and right foot are the proper way
I can't BELIEVE that the majority of these comments are social media and camera gear how to's. I mean I guess if you're more concerned about youtube and Facebook likes than helping a fellow biker out...priorities are stunningly in the wrong place. I was always told never leave a biker behind and I never have.
Riding in a group always has its challenges. Good luck and be safe. Hopefully you won’t have “that guy” in your group. Thanks
Off subject: The bike in the background is an S1000RR. I rode an S1000RR a couple of months ago. That bike is pretty sweet.
I keep trying to get a chance to ride it. Just hasn’t worked out, yet!
You mentioned trying out another seat. I heard Harley dealers offer a demo seat program. You should try that out at your local dealer lmao 😜. I have the sundowner solo on my 18 heritage and I really like it. Give it shot man!
Listen to those sexy TAB Performance pipes!! Thanks for this information John!!
Safe travels John...
Safe travels!
Hey John, Good thing you live in Georgia, they just ban vape products in Massachusetts. Love your stuff.
Thanks for this. Me and a dozen friends will be in Paris TX 😁
Yeah you’ll be in great shape dropping straight South out of Iowa and stay east of KC, then cross over. That whole Missouri River Valley is just a mess.
Put a U bolt a little farther up the camera pole. That'll keep it from spinning.
Couldn't get the the Time of from work to be the October 5th. Wish you guys luck 👍
Top channel... keep the good shit up...
Don’t forget to check for transmission to primary oil migration.....I here quite a few people on the Harley Davidson forms are having this issue. 2017-2019. Have you seen any?
Great video John! The Between2Wheels podcast also put out an episode with group riding as the topic, you should check it out! 😂😂😂
with your 360 cam... I can't see the mount close enough to see what is going on with it. But it seems something needs to be made bigger so you can make it tighter. Would a inner tube piece of rubber wrapped around the stick help to make it tighter? Gorilla glue the rubber on if need be. Hope you get it all sorted out.
John, Good luck, a group ride for me is no more than 3 , and lots of separation, watch out for squids. DW
Dude that foot shaking reminded
me of doing the Hokey Pokey! 🤓
Two important tips that weren't mentioned in the video...
- If you're riding with people you haven't ridden with before, make sure you leave a bit of extra space between you and them. It's amazing how bad some riders can be... Don't let someone else take you down with them.
- If you feel like someone is riding too close to you, make it known that they should back off, or alternatively, fall back to a different position in the group. It's more important to feel safe with the spacing around you than it is to worry about whether or not someone will take offense to the fact that you're uncomfortable with they way they are riding.
i hope my husband and his friends run into you in Texas! they’re riding in from Northwest Indiana.
Love the tips John ! I plan on using them for my first group ride this weekend! As a side note what kind of gloves are you using? they look bad ass!
I should be up that way about the time y'all are between Texarkana and Paris. I'll meet y'all at about the halfway point and join up. Wouldn't it be something if you had 2K+ bikes in your group when you pull up to Paris H-D? Ha! Ha!
I dont have the patience for a Group Ride
In California, we have fastrak to pay tolls
Still have that extra long clutch cable huh? Lol
😑
All pretty good tips. We try to meet up at a spot that has oil, air, and tools for any last minute maintenance items that need to happen. Also every rider has at least 2 spare bungees. You can do a lot with them if things go south.
We do quite a few iron butts and the same rule applies there, if you break down, you get left behind. We will come back when we are finished, but the time crunch is more important and the group shouldn't suffer. Everybody knows that ahead of time so it isn't a big deal.
I understand the drinking thing, but we have one road beer and a group prayer before each ride. The one time we didn't was the one time we had a major wreck. Superstition, but it works for us and it is Utah beer so...
Don't think they teach hand/arm turn signals now days. Took the Arkansas test online to see if I could pass after 53 years, (I did) but no test I took talked about hand signals. Grandson getting ready to test, I hope but doesn't seem to be to motivated.
