@mavishill Sadly it goes both ways, it seems some guys expect girls to be materialistic too. I am by no means the type of girl who wears anything expensive, or expects anything to be paid for me. That's why I'm going to school to get an education, so that I don't have to depend on anyone. I have a job, I pay my bills as well as help my parents and mostly spend my money on necessities. I have this opinion based on how I saw my parents struggle financially as I grew up.
My ex was struggling financially and was by no means a looker either. He was trying to improve his life and financial situation, and I was as supportive as a girlfriend should be without telling him he was obligated to. I told him to change because he wanted to for himself not for me or because of anything he wanted to give me. In the end, that's all he would talk about how he wanted to take care of me and buy me things regardless of how many times I said no. His friends would even say I'd break up with him if he didn't buy me things and take me out. Or would say things like he only got a job because of me otherwise he'd still be were he was before. His family mistreated him, and his friends gave him bad advice. A year into our relationship, he dumps me because supposedly "I was going places" and he wasn't. I, however, only wanted his love and company and never expected more than that.
I think depending sometimes on culture, men are especially expected to provide and if they can't, they feel emasculated. So if their gold diggers or not, a man having money means being in control, as well as having confidence. It takes alot of work and effort to be successful, and with success there's less to fear.
