  • "Sign On Bonuses" can mean a lot of things behind the scenes. It doesn't guarantee they are there, but it's sort a "where there's smoke there's fire" situation.
I have about a dozen red flags in the garbage industry. If I get some feedback on these, I'll work on getting the next ones done.

I remember getting an interview with Waste Connexions (I live in Québec), they had a sign on bonus.
When I found out that they have cameras in the cab watching the driver, who is not allowed to drink water, talk on the phone ect unless the brakes are pulled, I got turned off. They have insane turnover and appatantly poor maintenance, as well as overbearing management. Not to mention new drivers would be thrown all over the place on any rout and truck in different cities.
    I guess I dodged a bullet.

They operate a landfill in my area. It is still owned by the town. I worked there in the 90’s but then the town was broke and waste connections bailed them out by renting our landfill.

Check the galley freezer during your interview… if there’s a pile of electrolyte freeze pops in there… you know they’re going to work you like the south won 😅

Sign on bonus means employee retention problems. It's a retention incentive to get the new people to put up with sometimes illegal employment practices and unnecessarily unsafe conditions. My boss on a delivery job once bought a replacement truck. He swapped a truck that wouldn't start for a truck that wouldn't stop rolling, had bouncy exterior mirrors, two of four double wheels flat, no heat for the defroster, non functioning washer fluid system, and shredded windshield wipers. After surviving my first day in it I absolutely refused to get into it again until he fixed ALL the problems affecting safety. He TOLD ME he had and I returned to find that only half the list was done. After my first stop I returned to the shop and went home. He still had me back after the entire list was fixed. That's how hard up he was to get a worker at my price point.

Been in similar situations w different company. Stressful when you take a stand from a subordinate position.

      Anyway.
Yeah I'm gonna say this doesn't aply to all.
The wife took a job with a great sign on bonus from a top local employer.
The job came with above average pay and work environment was great.
      We didn't notice any drawbacks.
