Goten honestly needs to be utilized more, needs more development, actually needs his own arc, definitely needs his own goal, and definitely needs way more importance after the current DBS arc so I hope all that happens, especially considering he’s finally aged up and getting involved again. Hell I actually hope Goten is the main protagonist for the next Dragon Ball movie as that would also give him tons of development and shine. Plus it’s definitely time for Goku to actually dedicate time to training Goten which would also give Goten, so I hope that actually happens in the next arc. Like the main issue with Goten is that he hasn’t been utilized as much or gone through tons of development until recently, but they definitely need to do better with Goten, so Goten will get better treatment and become more as a character once all those problems for him are fixed hopefully after the current arc. Also Goten should get an arc where he’s the main protagonist and Trunks isn’t around and Goten has to rely on himself and improve himself in the arc. And while the Prequel arc was mostly centered around Trunks, I do like that it did bring Goten back into the story and did let Goten have some use and it did give Goten his own personality which I think is way better than his GT personality and I feel they’re not doing the ladies man thing for Goten which I’m very happy about, so hopefully they’ll add more to Goten’s new personality after current arc and actually let him set his own goals. I also think Goten (as well as Trunks) should later join the Galactic Patrol later down the line as I feel the Galactic Patrol would also do a lot for Goten’s character and do justice to his character and Galactic Patrol would honestly suit Goten’s character and personality better than the Saiyaman-X gig and also allow him to set new goals for himself.
Meanwhile Gohan with barely any training just surpasses SSB (maybe even MUI) eventhough he doesn't want to be a fighter just an office rat Heck the Kais who trained him are a fraud
Toriyama didn't really think about it throw while making Goten. The idea of making a replacement of Goku while Gohan is the main character sounded good on paper. But the moment they bring back Goku he simply become an obsolete character
Honestly i actually like how smugstick did with goten character better than anything that dbs/recent mangas during his video super 17 which is him becoming/wanting to be a adventurer and is tired of being shadow of others
You forgot that kid trunks even got his own movie with wrath of the dragon. Also, Goten's main trait in Z is that hes a follower. He follows trunks, gohan, chichi, whoever. That couldve been a good starting point of a character arc, but i guess people just forgot
It'd have been a great character development moment for Goten had he achieved SSJ after his mom died, instead of while sparring with Gohan, or while his mom was disciplining him when younger. That flashback could've been a trigger scene to realize his mom's care for him before turning SSJ to face Buu. I feel like no one bothers to develop Goten's character or explore his potential.
For me goten has been a cool character and I do think he has good potential, though Toriyama has done this with so many characters and that’s one of the main problems I have with the Dragon ball series. I get there’s a handful of characters, but it would be nice if there were mini arcs meant for the humans trying to reach god powers and Goten being able to discover who he wants yo be and be seen as a different character besides being known as a mini Goku
Just found this channel and yes, more love for my boy Goten please, he as been robbed of screen time and needs an arc. I've been writing a fan manga about Goten and Trunks' decendants, with my main focuse beeing on Goten's decendant to show what I wish they would actually do with Goten.
The infuriating thing about all of this is that is lack of distinction in of itself could have been made into an arc, I honestly thought that’s what they were setting up when I first watched the Buu saga as a kid years ago. I also wholeheartedly believe that goku black being Goten was on the table at some point during production of the original arc, I mean come on! Goku lookalike, is slightly thinner with a slightly younger face and has long sleeved gi like Goten and is evil, crazy with a transformation that turns the same color as Majin Buu the closest thing Goten had to an archenemy while the present one was being left out?! The pieces were all there!
I know I'm late but I really liked the idea of Goten being Goku Black. It would have given him something interesting by making him become the complet opposite of Goku while in the 'normal' timeline he is exactly like his dad. Also maybe at the end of the Arc make like an Episode where Goku spents time with Goten since we never saw them truely bond in Z or Super.

Goten is the type of character that doesnt work in Dragon ball because, he doesnt have a gimmick, his problem is that he only exists because Toriyama likes to pair characters, Tien and Chiaotzu and Shin and Kibito and many more but the problem with this dynamic is that the double gets outshined or forgotten because the other character in those doubles fall into the "It's no one favorite character" and Goten for most fans fall into this
