I believe the bodies would be stored in the vaults during the winter due to the ground being frozen, making burial near impossible. Then they’d be buried in Spring.
    Great content as always!!!

There is a leg buried in my grandma’s small little hometown cemetery in Samaria Idaho. The owner of the leg is buried on the other side of the same cemetery. We’d go there as kids on Memorial Day and always have to find the leg.

Maine has many old cemetaries dating back to the 1700's and I think older, they have the witch's foot in Bucksport, plus many others. Always enjoy your video, I have learnt alot form them.

My uncle crushed off the tip of a finger in a piledriver making a dock and he and his friends had a drunken funeral for it, and the glove he was wearing, and gave them a burial at sea. That always made me laugh as a kid.

The empty crypts may be old temporary crypts to store bodies of people who died in the winter. The ground would have been frozen too hard to dig. So they’d keep the bodies there to bury later when the ground thawed.

3:13 Not crypts, those were for storing coffins containing the deceased when the ground was too frozen to dig until a thaw.

Thank you, Chris! As it happens, I recall (in the 1960s) a man losing a leg to a shark attack off the (I believe) Jersey coast, and it was buried with the hope of being reunited with the rest of his body at the resurrection on the last day. As I say, this is a recollection, but I'm pretty sure I'm remembering correctly. I suspect religion may have played a role in these body parts being buried.

How interesting, never heard of a persons limb being buried after it was amputated. When I worked for the care industry, I looked after an amputee who had a leg amputated because of diabetes and during the winter he would say how the stump would ache and be so painful. He would go to bed as this was the only way he could cope along with pain killers to relieve pain. As far as I know the limb was discarded and don't think it was buried. Interesting story!

You may think it weird for someone to want to bury a part of their body buried, but, I don't think it is....Due to an infection, it was necessary for one of my toes along with two bones behind it, to be amputated. I thought about burying it. Right away family said to me "what's the big deal, its only a toe."...Yes, it's only a toe, but, it was MY toe. Please believe me when I tell you,it IS disturbing.

    • @JohnShinn1960
