As a volleyball referee of 5 years, I get really irritated when commentators say stuff like “the player the ball at the top of the ball wouldn’t make it a lift.” This is just incorrect. First of all the violation is prolonged contact not a “lift” like everyone else calls it. Secondly, calling it a lift makes it seem like the ball has to be contacted beneath the ball for it to be a violation, which is not the case. Thirdly it just further spreads incorrect information to everyone who watches.
When the ball is knocked down, or play doesn't extend for other strikes it looks clumsy. It's like anyone could do this. It's when the ball is vollied for a while that one can look through the tv and then you realize how hard the sport is-how fast the ball moves.
