    So glad you finally reviewed this blade! This is my number one favorite “jack of all trades” knife for hybrid outdoor/self defense/camping use. Unlike most other “master of none” designs, I find the Survivalist is aptly named because it truly punches above its weight in all categories. For price, the durability, reliability and performance is without compare among my other Cold Steeles’, Condors’, and Kabars’. Bar-none. I belt carry it in a two knife system with the drop forged hunter where I have the smaller knife’s sheath attached over the larger blade’s at the bottom. It looks REALLY good and it’s an incredibly adept outdoor sporting combo.

    The first time I purchased this knife was five years ago, and I definitely put it through quite a bit of tests!! it held up extremely well which is why I bought two more shortly after that!!
    When it comes to great value, that is not going to break the bank, you can’t get much better than this!! It definitely won’t let you down. It does every single thing I need it to!!

    One day my boss had some flooring coming in to the job site.
    We had to take apart the skid it was on so I was like ‘hold on guys I have something for that’.
    Went and grabbed this blade and just destroyed that skid. Everything from chopping to prying.
    I felt like a badass that day

    I have this knife, a standard Ka-Bar, an Ontario SP10, & some others. This is by far the best knife I own. I don't think you can find a better knife for the cost. I wish Cold Steel would make similar handle upgrades to The Drop Forged Hunter, & completely redesign the Drop Forged Bowie, such that it's an actual Bowie with a decent grippy handle, rather than the current short handle w/ fake stag scales, & zero retention to prevent it from slipping out of your hand.

    This is one of my favorite large fixed blades. Basically indestructible and 52100 allows for easy field sharpening. Really a great value as well.

  • @bobhabsolute4995
    @bobhabsolute4995 Před 4 lety +10

    For me 52100 is the regular carbon steel that performs like super steel. You can get a great edge, a great edge retention and a very good strength. It’s not a stainless steel but it’s more rust resistant than 1095 and with that coating ... The best part of this knife seems to be that, like you said, they did not go for the overkill profile. I think you have a winner. Very informative video, as usual. Thanks.

    Don't hit it with a rock. It's not recommended, anyway, but you might have to do so in sn emergency. I prefer the Schrade SCHF2SM. It's a solid piece of 1070 steel, with a hollow handle bored into the grip. It's less prone to shattering if abused.

    I have this knife, and the handle scales are better than they look. I tested them out wet, and they have better grip than a wet Ka-Bar with the Kraton rubber. The only negative is that the handle is a bit small for people with large hands. If you have regular size hands, it doesn't need modifications.

    • @quicktoevil
      @quicktoevil Před rokem

      I wear XL gloves, is this handle a deal breaker?

    • @DDDYLN
      @DDDYLN Před rokem

      @@quicktoevil it shouldn't be a problem. My hands are XXL in palm circumference (10.25"), and XL in length. There's plenty of length on the handle for people with wide palms. The circumference of the handle is admittedly a bit small. It's doable with gloves. But, if I was going to use this a lot without gloves, I'd probably add some circumference with grip tape or heat shrink grip.

    • @DDDYLN
      @DDDYLN Před rokem

      @@quicktoevil I put heat shrink grip tubing on most knife handles. I haven't on this one, because the handles are so grippy. I don't even bother with handles that are less than 4.75* long. This knife will be just fine for you, unless your fingers are extraordinarily long.

    The Drop Forged Survivalist is a good replacement for the Recon Scout, which was discontinued over 10 years ago. It is a little thinner, but a little longer, and a small upgrade in steel from the old CarbonV (1095 Cro Van). I had been looking for an old Recon Scout, but they are hard to find and expensive! Then I found the Survivalist and it was like the Recon Scout came back with some improvements. Especially the new 36mh which has better balance and grip than the previous gold colored 36mc model.

    For most the Cold Steel sure seems a good choice however I must consider grip first in most knives. Why? Only one hand to work with concerning any medium to large knife. And on that principle always consider incidents causing the same possibility for anyone. So when it comes to mostly metal, aluminum and carbon fiber grips I rarely will consider such knives. Grip in my case is always a top priority. This still provides plenty knives to consider. If you can imagine the wear on skin being essentially one handed. Very few really can realize such a thing. This comes with six decades of experience. Thanks to thalidomide!

I put some sticky tennis racket tape over the handle for thermal protection. If spudge gets under it, I just remove, clean & re-apply. I wish that you had removed the scales to reveal the cross profile of the forging. I am wondering if the forging dies got modified or not. Regards, Barry from Western Mass.

      If you must chop with it, use a two finger pinch and use the lanyard to keep it from escaping. You'll get 2x the chopping power as opposed to a hammer/traditional grip.

      I had the knife out just the other day and did some chopping with it, didn't really notice the ringing sound like I'd mentioned, must've depended on the thing being chopped. It's a decent chopper but it's full flat ground so the blade is a little lighter than many dedicated beastly choppers. A decent mix of large strong woods knife and a fighting knife. It is a Bowie, after all. Vibrations seemed insignificant as previously stated.

    • @johnnyshanksalot8358
      @johnnyshanksalot8358 Před 3 lety

      It's pretty simple, just get a dremel and a bucket of water and don't cut/grind for more than a second at a time without cooling it back down in the bucket. I cut Emerson waves into my folders all the time, if it doesn't get hot it'll be fine. On the flip side, if you just cut right through and don't cool it off, you're basically making good steels into 420j2.
