Sinopsis
La acción tiene lugar en Fuenteovejuna, un pueblo de la provincia de Córdoba, y se inspira en un hecho realmente acaecido en el siglo XV en dicho enclave agrario andaluz. El núcleo de la historia gira en torno a la lucha colectiva y solidaria de un pueblo contra la tiranía de un cacique, representado por la figura de Fernán Gómez, Comendador de la Orden de Calatrava y símbolo del despotismo y de los privilegios inamovibles de las clases dominantes andaluzas.
El pueblo asiste impotente a los abusos y a los excesos del citado Comendador soberbio y lujurioso que quiere imponer su propia voluntad a todos los habitantes de Fuenteovejuna, empezando por el representante del pueblo y terminando por los jornaleros y los pastores.
El epílogo del drama se centra en el proceso que se celebra para descubrir al culpable del homicidio del Comendador. El Juez se dirige al pueblo y este le responde:
"¿Quién mató al Comendador?
Fuenteovejuna, señor
¿Y quién es Fuenteovejuna?
Todos".
El juez comprende las razones del pueblo y nadie es declarado culpable. La justicia ha vencido.

Synopsis
The action takes place in Fuenteovejuna, a village in the province of Cordoba, and is inspired by an event actually occurred in the fifteenth century in the Andalusian agrarian enclave. The core of the story revolves around the collective struggle and solidarity of a people against the tyranny of a chief, represented by the figure of Fernan Gomez, Commander of the Order of Calatrava and a symbol of despotism and privilege class immutable Andalusian dominant.
The people helplessly witnesses the abuses and excesses of that proud and lustful Commander wants to impose its own will to all the inhabitants of Fuenteovejuna, starting with the representative of the people and ending with the day laborers and shepherds.
The epilogue of the drama focuses on the process that takes place to find the culprit of the murder of Commander. Judge speaks to the people and the answers:
"Who killed the Comendador?
Fuenteovejuna, sir
Who is Fuenteovejuna?
All. "
The court understands the reasons of the people and no one is convicted. Justice has expired.
