If a terran showed up randomly in the last 20 minutes and then started attacking his own bases, it would accurately sum up the starcraft backstory.
good one
This deserves more
The two hosts well deserve a bonus for keeping the audience entertained non-stop.
Hahaha it was very hard work. I don't think any of these were in this highlight reel, but it got to the point where we were having contests to guess how many of X unit had died etc. and someone from the chat was ordering pizzas for whoever correctly guessed the number first. It was a very unique experience, but I'm glad I've never been in THIS bad of a casting situation since

Fun fact: The actual longest professional game was 4 hours 10 minutes long, and it was played the 13th of January 2015. It was a WCS EU qualifier game between ZhuGeLiang and Lillekanin.
Thanks sc2hl anyway for the work.
Thank you, for the hint! I am from finland like zhuge and seen a few of his games so it was nice to see how he looked back then.
Surprised it only took two years to beat the record this game set.
I'm getting flashbacks of locust running into siege tanks for hours
Wow a bit of a fail on my end, I'm sorry!
I need to see if that game was casted at all
Lol god that match was terrible mass raven was so stupid
3+ hours under 30 minutes? amazing job as always sc2hl!
I just love to hear the commenter slowly go mad as nothing happen xD

I think he gave up, or he had to pee.
He probably killed off all his probes and was supplied locked.
@@taijiangah yeah pretty much this - when he first lost that nexus to drop below 200 max supply he had just 2 probes left, one of which died right after. No idea if the other one died or he just couldn't find it or what, but if you can't make probes to build your pylons then you're basically toast
asharak84 from what I saw at the zergling highlight at least one was alive scooting on past unless either side killed it
25:33 colossus with 389 kills
Forced to fight super cost effective zero supply 'static' defenses, flying casters that can aoe and force one vs all engagements and endless free waves of powerful units. Worst era of SC2 that crippled the game.
One thing I pulled from this was the fact that the Zerg lost almost 3x as many units as the toss, yet spent a 1/3rd of the resources to do so.

Whoever come up with Swarm Host must grew up watching paint dry.
Shout-out to those two unfortunate unmined bases.
5 years, 1 expansion and like 50 balance updates later, swarm hosts and tempests still feel kind of awkward.
They're definitely still awkward, niche units, but they're waaaaaaay more fun to play and watch than they were in HotS. This was a very dark time

Blame it on the creep, Protoss been stalled

This is the Starcraft version of the Siege of Vraks from 40k. If this battle had actually happened in the SC universe it would be a legendary campaign told to fresh Zealots by their commanders to bolster morale.
Thanks for uploading this and helping me find one of my favorite games of SC2 ever. I watched it live but had trouble finding it again for years.
This game alone is the reason the resource system was revamped in Legacy
May I ask how it was revamped?

“Just one more game darling before bed”
I guess it took them a year to edit this 3+ hour footage
this match is actually 5 years old
Why did it take a whole year to change the swarmhost ¬¬
EXACTLY! It was totally imbalanced...Zerg always had the option to get WAY better trades in the late game and FORCE these exhausting, super-boring, very long games. It is like camping non-stop for hours in FPS games. Complete trash. Plus it takes superior skill to counter this playstyle since your units (in contradiction to locust waves for the Zerg) are not free, thus you are always at the edge of trading worse if you lose ANYTHING.
@@ascenator It was not totally unbalanced, this compo requiered 2 spellcasters, a lot of multitask with static D, a constant creep spead, and the gestion of rally point/locusts in order to not get outmanoeuvred which happened a lot with such a slow compo, it while war prism were super deadly. I thought it was easy to understand but I get that sc2 is sometimes a too complex game. :/ There were so many way to lose and the transition requiered to achieve it against mobile comp like blink stalkers was really hard to say the least. The design was terrible but there was no excuse to lose against this. Otherwise, protoss would have dominated 2014 years with 5 straight victories with different players in premier tournament (a feat never reproduced since then).
As for why it lasted not 1 but 2 years (critics are as usual well informed about the different states of the game!). Well, if you are not too stupid, look at the protoss deathball at the time : the tempest was only 4 supply and could hit the ground with 15 fucking range. It outranged everything the zerg had while the archons/templars/void rays wreck every tentative to attack them (with only 4 supply, you could have a massive army). Oh btw, infestors were shits, neural was only 7 range and terran infested did no bonus damage to air and was basically useless. The only good spell was fungal, not the best one to say the least against the golden armada, and vipers well, I guess I need to inform that being massively outranged and hard countered by feedback, this unit was generally not very usefull. (Parasit bomb did not exist at this time)
But then, you will say "but xD we just can kill the protoss before". Well, first of all, if you have to kill while playing a reactive race as zerg, this is already problematic in term of meta but the worst is the mid game was not a bit but heavely dominated by the toss. +2 attack blink stalkers/sentry on 3 bases was already superior to any no t3 tech the zerg had to offer. It made a muta build impossible because it straight up killed you and was cost efficient against just... everything. Actually, in most of the case, the zerg had to survive this stage until he hit a window with a a broodlord push or a tricky full mutas transitions (suicidal against mass stalkers but still) or a timing with mass infestors, soon after, he was 100% dead. 90%of the zergs at the time were looking for a victory in the early stages.
Anyway there is no way to fight a hots golden armada with a zerg army post sh nerf in hots.
That's why it existed, not design but balance purpose.
And don't brag about life's victories at blizzcon 2015, all of them are all in by Life or him countering two bases pushs, risky dt play or massive advantages grabbed in early games he could not win in standart games despite being the best zerg of all times.
@@andrerocka8135 Sitting on your ass and rallying from behind static D is not hard or balanced. There is way more stress places on the opponent to defend waves of free high DPS units and no amount of excuse making can justify how awful this was to watch and play against.
Zergs got cheesed by toss precisely to avoid this 15k-50k resource loss ratio, late game was pointless, the Zerg virtually never lost.
Life demonstrated the game was winnable for Zerg at all stages of the game without swarmhost camping. Life won more games muta+bane that year than Snute using Swarms as a crutch. This garbage was indefensible at the time and even less so now.
@@chinogambino9375 Life did not demonstrate it at all. Or you have to explain to me why he didn't try to go late game in gsl, kung fu cup and wcs world while arguing in numerous interview that late game was unwinnable (or you know better than the best zerg of history ofc) No zergs could win against a late game protoss army, Byul in 2015 managed to grab some games with BL timings and weird mutas play (which relied on protoss mistakes cuz losing to mutas with mass stalkers blinks was quiet a feat) but he was the only one and got spanked in wcs world by classic for playing standart despite being considered as the best zerg of the last two gsl/ssl seasons.
Life's wins were cheeses and successful all in defense, no standart play, go watch his wcs world 2015, kung fu cup and his gsl games before talking of imaginary comp. He performed rather poorly after the patch in gsl being crushed by protoss and mech play which was a big concern too. And bane/mutas against protoss in hots... what are you smoking and even more in late game with storm/archons. Lol The worst of your talk is Life was not even the best muta player in zvp, this title belonged to soO who really makes it a trademark until he hits a wall in 2015 with the rise of blink stalkers/sentry. The only times Life sucessfully beats a late game toss army with tempest, he was using sh+static D cuz there were no other way. (He did it against parting and san and lost against Zest in a super close 40min game)
Anyway, for your information; at the time, stalkers/sentries was the way to go as protoss, I guess you don't even know that it counters heavely banelings x)
Forcefields + the armored stalkers who can blink back made banelings useless, it was just a troll unit in zvp or used as an early all.
Anyway, you have to tell me how a protoss army with mass tempest, archons/ hts can be beaten without sh. Range (tempest had 15 range even for ground with 4 supply), aoe (archons, storm), durability, counter casters (feedback), vision, at the time, all the advantages were to the protoss, that's a fact. The BL didn't have the +1 range, the infest terrans didn't have any bonus against air and didn't scale with upgrads, neural was 7 range, corruptors were slower and all the zerg pros were complaining about late game but ofc it was balanced !
@@andrerocka8135 Balanced or not, it was literally the most unfun unit in the RTS genre imaginable.
Keep in mind this game is only 3 hours in hots time. You can see how much faster the timer is moving in game. I think it's like 1.4 sec/real sec so it would be like 2 actual hours.
"Congratulations" lol

"a HUGELY long time"
heh heh heh
When I played sc2 back in 2014 2 hour plus games would be normal for me it was so much fun
I remember watching the full a few years ago)
I actually remember watching this game live. It was wild lol
I remember this game. I even watched it live, iirc.
Ahhh long time no see. What a famous match. What an awesome match. God the Swarm Hosts were so fucking bad for the game...
Literally all us Zerg players wanted were Lurkers because we did need a ground siege unit, but they hated reusing old units as if most of the units used weren't from SC1 anyway so we got a broken Swarm Host unit that was brain dead and not fun to play, worse than Broodlords. I quit a little bit into Heart of the Swarm. Problem is the way units all bunch up unlike BW, units like these will be way too cost effective.
A good New Years gift :D
my god you look 3h of game for at the finala make a vidéo of 30 min epic gg and thx for this great vidéo

I just came here from watching a 8h Age of Empires 2 game wtf.
This is crazy, LOL!!!
HOTS pretty much killed my interest in pro SC2 lol because of stuff like this. Terrible meta for everyone involved, watching or playing.
This. I pretty much stopped playing SC2 because almost every game vs zerg became a losing battle as soon as swarm host started to be built and there wasn't a solid way to efficiently break the wall of static defense.
They stuffed the game with so much anti-fun it was insane. It started with hellbat drops every game, marine mine parade pushes, oracle cheese, mine drops. All the worst aspects of the game were amped up, APM requirements countering dumb things became such a chore and they knew it was broken. Kind of fitting WoL ended with Broodfestor death balls and HotS went out with Swarmviper camping meta.
So much has been fixed over the course of LoTV
@@SCKentrol Just a question: was it impossible to counter it with static defense of your own? For instance, in this match MaNa could have afforded to put down literally a hundred photon cannons. Couldn't that have protected his bases long enough to doom drop Firecake's main?
@@nnelg8139 The problem with cannons is that swarmhosts regenerate attacking units indefinitely so the cannons would all just die at no cost to the zerg.
Lol casters have really improved
That intro :O
23:35 last fight
Imagine if Firecake ever moved his swarm host line closer. Think how many hours that would have saved. Probably 3.
The longest SC2 game IS Clem vs a zerg ( I forget his name)
The match made 2h30 but are ",true" minuts
the best far away!! XD hahahahaha
Lol that Abduct chain
This should have been over in under an hour.
Great intro
The great wall of Spina... Hahaha
Anything giving free units should have been a red flag during balancing ^^
Is there gonna be a best of 2018 video this year?
I have not ever played Starcraft or seen it before, but this is still interesting
Think of it as turbo 3d chess. But harder
ah mana vs firecake, i remember a similar long match on ohana :D okay not that long but still :D
Those static defense though, probably 5k minerals spent on them alone
Amazing "cause he is not making pylonssss!"...
corrupters are so good against any air unit
the pain from supply block is real
The toss should have turned his bank into cannons and shield generators and slowpushed, it would have at least guaranteed a draw. I know people will say that's stupid because of the swarm hosts but with that deathball he doesn't have anything to fear, he needs to push slowly with his deathball straight at zerg infrastructure. He should win if the swarm hosts are taking up supply. I'm glad this era of the game is long since dead.
Now I gotta hear that hosts rap, he seemed awfully keen to do it.
nice new intro, but i dont know its only me but i used to like more the old one, it was simple but dang it was good
When I have seen it in advised to watch, I expected something new from LotV, but meh, I have seen full this video loooong time ago :D
The glorious protoss race in heart of the storm!!! Legacy of the void protoss is so nerfed
But what's a vampire's favorite fruit!? I need to know.
Blood Oranges
i was thinking about reality vs hydra lol
Mana needed to make some static turrets with shield batteries nearby. That would've prevented any inefficient trades with locusts.
except that shield batteries weren't in the game back then
2018 is the last year Blizzard has any viable Esports titles.
Zerg won so surprising.
So?? Most Starcraft 1 games were *1-2hours* each... i miss those days. Actual base play. Not just 2 mobs clash and gg
The great war in StarCraft.
UH. . . HI: we need more games like this.
At some point you just build 10000 overseers and crash the game with the sheer amount of changelings
Let's go mana!
back when sc2 was alive feelsbad
Why didn't the zerg just go attack? I understand the Swarm Hosts are sieging units, but at this level of play he should've known he had way more resources and could re-max immediately 2 or 3 times if his army got wiped. Alternatively, why didn't the protoss just surrender? He must also have known how hopelessly out macro'ed he was.
When there's money on the line, surrendering loses it's appeal.
toss: Never give up! Never surrender!
zerg: It's not about winning. It's about sending a message.
Protoss hadn't lost at all, he just couldn't do anything. He was waiting for a possible opening, which is what the Zerg could have given him by pushing (which is why he didn't).
@@Excludos "Protoss hadn't lost at all"... I mean, come on. Seriously? He'd been losing expansions left and right all game. His opponent controlled the map, had enough resources and larva to remax twice and he had no bank, that's essentially a loss. Even if the zerg pushes and loses everything, and the toss only loses 1/3 of his army, the zerg would be remaxed by the time the toss gets to his base and the toss didn't have enough to replace the 1/3. Is it literally a loss? No, but it basically is because at the GM level there won't be many mistakes.
I'm not really faulting the protoss for not surrendering. I think its more on the zerg for not pushing in for the win. I feel he could've safely ended it way sooner.
@@ross.metcalf You said it yourself: There's a difference between "losing" and "having lost". The Protoss was in a tough position for sure, but he hadn't lost yet, and in an official game you don't Idra out and leave before you've actually lost. Likewise the Zerg didn't want to leave even 1% chance of winning to his opponent, so he never pushed.
But... Why didn't you make a video of this back in the day?
I thought the same. I got so confused by this game as the meta is so different now
this channel is a part time channel
@@91010186 Its funny because he was more active during hots and now as he is less active he suddenly makes a video of a hots game
Havent watched vid yet, but late game with a zerg. Mana has no chance
Sky zerg is OP can't believe it beat skytoss
Can someone tell me how the protoss mary composition is? and should i use it? im a beginner
i see 3 celossi 10 tempest
It depends of the opponent. 3 Celossi to counter swarm host little army on the ground is the only reason he kept some. 10 tempest is specific and useless in online matches, but here it was a game where you try to poke your opponent to death (and zerg won that) and tempest can hit from so far they are the best units in this kind of situation
In all honestly the protoss should have just surrendered, it was very obvious he was going to lose, even if he won the final fight the zerg could have remaxed instantly, the toss is at fault for the game length.
Do u want him to just surrender, its a tournament game buddy
@@Jousef9 yes
Honestly for the swarmhost cheese I think the Zerg player deserved having the game go this long. Serves him right
