I started crying at baby items lol (and continued pretty much straight through) who knew organizing videos could make you cry?
At the start of my decluttering journey I had given a shirt away to a local charity (that gives back to our community through their thrift shop sales of donated items). I remember the shirt so well because I had added a special button to the top of the shirt so it would lay right. About 3-4 months later, I saw a women at the grocery store wearing the shirt. I complimented her on the shirt (because it looked so much better on her then it ever did on me). She said “Thank you, I love it!” It made my day! Knowing someone got joy out of wearing something that would have otherwise stayed in my closet. Now when I am cleaning, decluttering or trying to decide if I need to keep something, I think of her and that shirt…it makes letting go of stuff so much easier.

This video reminds me how we have been told our whole lives " don't cry "don't be a baby" so many times that we feel shame for showing emotions. It's so toxic and we should all help each other break this down 💕

This made me cry. 😭 Such a good way of looking at decluttering. I have been the woman at the Salvation Army who was so thankful for the clothes that I was able to get for my children for so much less than retail. ❤️ I like to think that my donations have blessed someone else as well.
For me, the struggle with decluttering is that I want the item to go where it can do the most good. I HATE just dropping things off at Goodwill so that company can turn a profit. I love that you mentioned Women's shelters, daycares, homeless shelters, nursing homes, medical charities, and after school programs as options. I'd love to see more great places to send our stuff. That's truly my biggest hangup. Just like the mom with the baby's foot brace, I can easily and quickly part with my junk if I know it is going to the right place. Please give us more ideas!!
emergency rooms often have to cut off clothing and people need something to wear home sometimes.
Yes same! I even have seen thrift shops and shelters throw out perfectly good items (not just due to something like bedbugs) and so when i can hand over an item directly or closer to the new owner, it feels like a safer bet that the item won't be trashed soon...but it also triggers my hoarder mind to hold onto donation items longer.
It has helped that i have been more selective and more aware about what charities/shelters/groups that i send items to.

Remember that Goodwill and other thrift stores are most often set up to use the proceeds for job training programs or other charity programs. 💜
I'd like to add that jigsaw puzzles are great to donate to nursing homes/assisted living. Especially smaller ones (200-500 pieces) that aren't super hard. My grandma has been in assisted living 5 months and has already done every puzzle there that fits on her card table multiple times, plus we have bought several to try to give her something new. She doesn't know how to crochet or knit, but she loves puzzles.

As a Former Activity Director of an Assisted Living Center for Alzheimer’s I’ll shout out in Agreement here! Most of us work with very little budgets! And better yet, donate some time and stay to work those puzzles! I accepted beauty products, books, games and most needed was what Cas said CRAFT SUPPLIES! I’m tearing up typing this too! Many Residents never had a single visit from family. They were literally dropped off with little to nothing! So check with a local center and see what they could use to bring some love to these people in our society who are so often forgotten!
Word and number puzzle books are also popular.
When my mother-in-law passed suddenly in a crash, we found some unopened balls and baby items in the closet. We were not sure what they were for. We finally learned she liked to donate to a program that gave Christmas gifts to children who's parents are incarcerated (her crash was right before Christmas). So that's an idea that always stuck with me.

Never put yourself down while you are picking up so many! You are doing a great service by connecting those with more to others who have less. That's moving & and heart felt & the perfect time to cry.
I, too, was crying for the nursing home and medical equipment. Then when you started talking about your work with people who could not afford basic things like clothes and dishes.
I am a crybaby, too.
I think "crybabies" are what the world needs. People who are emotionally motivated to help others. Keep it up, and I will cry with you.
This is exactly how I feel. After my husband died nearly 3 years ago, I went through his stuff (clothes, etc) and donated it all within months of his passing. So many of my friends were astonished, but all I could think of was that someone needs this and that all it was gonna do in my house was collect dust. We have volunteered for years at our local CF Storehouse (they give everything away for free) and I know that he would have wanted this. Granted I kept a few things my boys might want later but overall I emptied his side of the closet. Once you work with the homeless, needy, and the elderly your mind shifts to all the "help" this stuff can be. Don't feel too bad about crying. You made me cry with your story because I have those stories too.

I hope you remembered to check the pockets before donating. My dad is a guru of dumpster diving and came upon some books with total $70.00 in them. Purses with money in them and all kinds of things which are of value that people didn’t think were and tossed them into the garbage.
I too went to put something in a donation pile when I thought to look inside and found a pair of earrings and realized that my aunt had given me the item and the earrings together but I had had the items in a box packed away for 6 yrs marked cleaning that ended up having kitchen items not intended to be donated or given away
I felt the same way when my husband died. Getting rid of his clothes did not diminish my memories of him.
My husband and I would go through our closet once a year and get all the old sweatshirts and jackets and make up bags with personal care products, a warm shirt and power bars. After he died I just new he would want me to continue doing this. So I make up bags that I give to my church. I just tell them to say it's from Stan (my husband) I learned to ignore people's comments about how I disposed of his clothes
The elderly population NEEDS us. Thank you, thank you for bringing awareness. The little things can mean so much to those who have spent their lives giving to others.

Cass, don't EVER feel embarrassed or ashamed of crying on camera. It's a sign of strength, compassion, and vulnerability. You have such a beautiful heart. Don't ever be afraid to show that. I have worked in a nursing home for over 2 decades and THANK YOU for sharing about this! I wish more people knew the things you are talking about! I could write a book on this issue. Give anything you can to our elderly!!!❤ Thank you for your genuine heart!!
How do you go about doing that? Do you just cold call the nursing facilities in the area? Would whoever answers the phone be able to help answer questions or should you ask for someone in a particular position?

Thank you for this video ! God used you to speak truth in my life. I called our local nursing home and the day I called was the first day they officially had hired an activity director ! I talked with her and we worked up a list. Now there's a tote at my church and although its only been there for a little over a week, one lady shared that she has a lot of crochet items she's bringing to our box :) so excited to partner with our nursing home - maybe every few months to try and keep them stocked ! I also learned that they are happy to have churches sponsor a number of residents and the residents pick out a gift for their exchange friend out of what is there 😍😍😍 excited to get involved more. We have a new "clothing pantry" in our town for homeless/needy people. I was surprised to find out they need more than just clothing. They take (clean) pillows, bedding, pillow cases (I had SO many extra pillow cases)....even a big beach towel. I was told they'd use it for a towel or even a blanket. I also found that a rolling suitcase is considered a real "score" -- some of the homeless get stopped and have their grocery cart taken away (maybe because it was possibly stolen). Also, they can't take a grocery cart inside with them at, say, a warming or cooling shelter...but they can roll a suitcase in. I was so glad to give up my spare one, and I found out when it was given to a homeless woman she exclaimed, "And it's so pretty!". It really does help to know we can help others and ourselves at the same time.

Best decluttering video... EVER! When you look at it that way; why wouldn't I give what we are not using? I cried too. It's ok, it makes us humans that care. 💛
When my husband passed away a year ago, I donated 26 suits (a few with tags on) and over 40 ties. For me it was therapeutic to know that people would benefit from those. BTW, I'm a person who cries easily and I've reached the point where I realize there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Some of us are just "wobbly-hearted" by nature. ❤

It took me awhile before I was able to donate my husband’s suits after he died, but I was able to let them go happily when our local high school asked for suits for their career program, Dress for Success. My heart goes out to you in your grief. A big hug.

Oh man!!! So glad I’m not the only one that feels that ways about the elderly. I’m Navajo and we have a game we play only during the winter. A group of people from our community would get together to play with the elderly. To see their happy faces and sing the songs was the best memories of my life.
Yes! I learned that men’s jeans are the thing shelters need the most. Men in shelters need hardwearing pants that can stand up to sitting/sleeping rough and infrequent laundry (but when they do get laundered it’s rough too). When I told my husband he donated some pants he would’ve kept forever otherwise. Our local YWCA women’s shelter also takes empty journals - women and their kids appreciate having a place to process everything they’ve been going through and most of us have tons of notebooks and journals lying around, so that’s another easy one.
I have so many journals and notebooks that I don’t want to just throw away or take to goodwill. Thank you for this idea!!

Today I packed up 15 years of my sorrow in the form of tiny hotel shampoos, body lotions & conditioners that I accumulated over the last 15 years of long-distance Eldercare that I did to take care of my dying mother, who lived far away. I bagged them, boxed them, and dropped them off a homeless shelter. I know how grateful someone will be to get these.

Ghaa, this episode really got to me. I am in the "shop at goodwill" category, and can say I am so appreciative of all of the things donated to charity shops and to my family directly. There was a Christmas where we got presents through donation, and then I was able to get a dress and shoes for prom through the Cinderella project, I even got a voucher to get my hair done, which made me feel so special. I still have the dress and it remains one of my dressiest pieces of clothing. So thank you Cas and thank you to everyone who donates and helps others. It is truly appreciated

I had five boxes of household items I was planning to take to goodwill, then I heard a family had lost everything in a fire and they were finally getting settled in an unfurnished mobile home. I took everything to them to go through intending to take what they didn’t want to goodwill. They needed everything from cups, plates, kitchen utensils, picture frames, sheets, curtains, pots and pans and a few Christmas decorations. It felt wonderful watching them unbox and find things they needed and could use 💖💖💖
I didn’t cry through this video - I SOBBED! (I’m a crybaby, too.). It started with the poor sweet puppy lying on the cold, hard cage and went right to the last minute of the video. So, thanks, Cas, now my eyes will be swollen at work tomorrow morning! But seriously, thank you. There some things I hadn’t thought of, like balls of yarn to retirement homes. I will look at decluttering and donating in a whole new way now. And you, my friend, are a treasure. ❤️

At a bath and body supply store I used to manage we would take the returns that were still good and save them up and once a month take them to the womens shelter. I will add that it honestly isn’t just women though-there are women who leave with their kids, including sons. The kids can use the donations too.
Also, when we did a large donation to the homeless shelter we got to “tour” it and we met some of the people there. We asked the women what are the things they need most-female supplies and diapers were their top two they listed.
Every charity I have ever volunteered at has stacks of sanitary supplies & diapers because so many women need them. Anyone who has gone through menopause....donate those unused boxes of tampons & pads!
I live in a large apartment building with many low-income hoyseholds. With permission from the housing cooperation, we've set up a set of shelves in one of the elevator lobbies where people can leave unused items for others to pick up. A lot of my de-cluttering ends up there.
The things that aren't taken by fellow residents within a couple of weeks, are brought to local thrift stores.

Oh my goodness, Cass, you asked if I'm sitting on old yarn. I'm literally sitting on my bed and my yarn is under my bed. My tears were the opposite of yours. It's hard to let go. Thank you for sharing your emotional plea!
My kids and I always talk about how our stuff is going to other people, other kids. Makes it so much easier to part with it...
My church has a ‘prom dress’ give away each spring. It empties out those things from our closets and gives others a free dress- an older lady chose one for a nieces wedding….all free! Thanks for the tears…

Someone close to me had to leave a horrible relationship, with one bag and kids. And the generosity that so many people showed, including many complete strangers was so unexpected and heart warming. It allowed that mama to rebuild her life with her kids. In this crazy harsh world there is so much good, sometimes we need to be reminded of it. Thanks for a great video and inspiration.

Facing helping my parents downsize, and I knoooooow there will be craft stuff like yarn and fabric that need new homes. I would never have thought of nursing homes. Thank you.

I helped a special person pass along a lot of her hoarded items. Once I could tell her about a need she was so willing to allow me to remove volumes of clutter that could benefit someone else. I believe my more gentle approach to her 'hoarding' collection was what helped her regain some as semblance of order in her life. We sometimes need to 'look for that person with a need' to be willing to let go This is the best encouragement video I have watched. You’re doing a great job.
Let the tears flows. I see it as emotional decluttering and frees space within us. And thank you for reminding us of the whole picture of donating by including the people who receive our donations.

I've given sooo much stuff to my local charity stores and the gift of giving to those who truly need essential things is worth so much than buying yet another unnecessary thing for myself. My parents brought us up with the same values and I'm grateful every day for everything that I have and will help others wherever I can. Such wonderful advice Cas. Our beloved cat passed away this weekend and we boxed up all his things and brought them to our local animal shelter. They were so grateful and appreciative to receive it all, and it helped us find some good in what we were going through. Knowing that the items will be making other kitties happy has brought us some comfort. Thanks for your wonderful videos!

Tears show what a caring person you are. I was crying as you told the story of the club feet braces. I too am so emotional. My husband and son think I am crazy, I cry watching commercials and tv shows all the time. Sometimes even reading a book. A big ole softy I am.

Here in the US, we have a charity called “Dress for Success” that you can donate “career wear”. They help women with finding jobs, writing a resume, handling an interview, and outfitting them for it. It’s a wonderful organization, and I encourage anyone that’s retired, or just letting go of old work clothing to donate them, and help someone else.
I’m so glad that you mentioned battered women’s shelters. There are so many women in terrible relationships with no hope, until they take this step.
Love it!! This is so true! I try to target my donations in this manner. I just moved from Alaska to Washington last year (3200 so house, 2 large storage unit and a double car garage full) and purged about half of my crafts, and have since purged another 1/3 of my yarn and fabric... I knit, crochet, sew, bead, you name it... I gave my yarn and fantasy-self scrapbooking materials to a community center that has a special needs adult outreach. They were just beside themselves. The guilt i had for not creating baby books for my now 4 daughters... turned into such a blessing for all of them. I donate all the mini shampoos and such to women's shelters, baby items to pregnancy outreach locations, old towels and unfit bedding to an animal shelter and a highlander full to the brim of general items to a family that was fundraising for adoption. It does in deed feel good to get the stuff out of the house knowing it will be used, loved and appreciated. Granted there have been times i have drug my feet trying to find the right type of place to donate to... now im able to just get it moved instead of hold onto it until.... And yes, it is worthy of emotions! Awesome video!

@@Clutterbug I wish I could convince my dad who is a collector of dumpster finds about donating. His and my mum’s house is so full of stuff he has found in garbage (I am so embarrassed telling ppl this) but he won’t donate or give it away because he expects to get money for it except covid put a stop to donating and yard sales so he couldn’t even have a yard or garage sale so again he waited yet stuff kept coming in
He has found cutlery in its cutlery container, classes, mugs, storage containers, (he has about 15 to 20 storage rubber maid containers ppl have thrown out, he has found curling irons, brand new stuff not even out of the package, also cleaning supplies, cds, jewelry, eye glasses, chairs, lamps, blankets, clothing, DVD players, you name it he has it in his place. It has filled up my parents home so badly they can’t use or access their living room or dining room, stuff lines the stairwell and the hallways. He has found shelving units, medicine cabinets, shower items, shampoos, etc. It takes me 15 mins to step over things to get upstairs to the bathroom.
But he doesn’t pack it up
What he should have done this summer since we had such a Marvelous summer and had me come and help sort like items together then I could have taken a van or car and taken it away and helped the declutter but my parents unfortunately only seem to want to do it at a slow pace and their own and not get help to move things.

I so needed to hear this! I have extremely high anxiety when just thinking about decluttering- the guilt from my compulsive shopping overwhelms / paralyzes me- so I end up doing nothing but sinking further in my self induced mess. The shifting of the mindset of “gifting” rather than decluttering- turned on the light bulb- it’s the way I know I can do this and take back control of my house. I recently found that a nearby church is collecting things to take to coal mining communities. All you have to do is drop it off. The rest of the year they help their local community with these donations. I prefer to not give to Goodwill and other places because the people who wish to buy these items have to have money. Most don’t have any money to spare. Thank you Cas for all you do!!

You’re not a baby. You’re amazing for how much you care! I was homeless for 3 months in the middle of Boston winter. It was hell, I snuck into abandoned vehicles…and Harvard university but that’s another story lol. An 18 year old kid…I was so scared. I think back in those times now and always donate items to the homeless. But sheets, towels….the animal shelters. I’m such an animal lover and I didn’t even think of it! Thank you for making this video. I hope for all those people it’s just a small portion of their lives before they can find a house of their own and make it a home like I did. ❤️ ty Cassie

This video gave me more of a perspective of how things I am not using will help others. It encouraged me to give more than I thought possible because of where and to who it was being donated to. Thank you for more than the "usual" donations guide. I know of many charities who just sell or dispose of some items they cant make money on. I also was in tears knowing that everything I am "decluttering" will go to someone in true need. Thank you for the inspiration and continued motivation.

Decluttering in the barn we found a hard plastic leg brace and 2 back braces from my husband and father in law. Found a place that accepts these as donations and I was so excited to give them over! It always feels so much better to give to someone who will be able to use it!
I have been truly blessed by the gifts of others passing along their things. Never underestimate how something small can make a huge impact on someone else.
I must be a big baby too! This video had me bawling like a baby. I have been so hesitant to declutter because of the guilt of buying things that I have never used. Your idea of “sharing” with those in need, while so simple, is brilliant. I have SO MUCH unused yarn, craft supplies, clothing, books, sheets and towels that could be blessing others. I’m on a mission to find local places that can use these items for folks who cannot afford them. Thank you for helping me look at donating in a totally different way! ❤️

Awww, Cass, you aren't a baby. Our eyes simply spill over when we are full of emotion. That comes from a heart filled with kindness!
First, I cried with you. I am a PT by trade and have also worked in a nursing home, and you are right. Those residents are so appreciative of everything, especially those who don't have many visitors.
Second, I now work in the home health setting, and I have come across several patients who cannot afford walkers, canes, wheelchairs, etc. For people who don't know where to donate such equipment, most home health agencies will accept equipment and pass it along to patients who really need it.
Love this video so much! I think I'll keep an eye out for yarn sales and buy it for the nursing home in my area. Another thing they love are jigsaw puzzles. Thanks for making this video! ❤
