  • Yeeeeep, after more than 16 months of not starting the engine, I started it up, and REVELED in the victory :). And then another damned bore plug popped (this is the third one). The third Welch plug popped, and I've replaced it with a Dorman neoprene rubber plug. It literally took 30 seconds to put it in, cinch the nut down, and declare victory. I am, in a word, THRILLED that the engine may be reliable enough to take the car around the block for a jog :)

This is the reason you change the core plugs when you have the engine out. Replace with brass and JB weld. BTW I put a engine back in my car that set under my workbench for 33 years. Ran better than when removed, did not rebuild carburetors just cleaned them up. I have followed your you channel and found it helpful. So turn to and get that car on the road.

I had this happen on my 71 volvo 142E, I had my machine shop install my plugs, (I assembled everything else) everything went well for around 5 ish hours of driving, next day I try to make a show about 10 mins from my house, get up to the speed limit and I’m James bonding everyone behind me (maybe a mile from my house). Managed to hammer the plug back in and limp it home, removed that plug, installed a new factory style one (engine still in the car) with an air chisel and a special end to dimple the face enough. I’m assuming you’re having the same issue of them not being installed correctly

Don't know if they were improperly installed or not, to be honest. I found an older thread in a Volvo forum that talked about a plug batch being too small by a smidge. Regardless, I replaced them with neoprene plugs and called it a day...
