I looked at works of Glen orbik and fred fixler ..they mostly use 2 vakues in quick drawings , they simplify the shapes .yet they have the visual read of the subject ...how they manage to do that with just 2 values is awesome .

Indeed. 2 value system goes all the way back to Europe.

    Fantastic as usual!
I'm entering the editorial illustration world and I like drawing portraits, but I'm worried about copyright infringement with reference photos. How does this process work for you? When you draw a movie poster, does the production company provide you with reference photos they own the copyright of? I notice lots of illustrators replicating reference directly and either selling it as personal work or even using it for clients. Is this one of those things that's 'illegal' but people are rarely called out on which is why it happens so often? How does this work? Any tips?

If your drawing is your own unique creation that adds value then its all good in my mind

Hey Chris, would you say having less shapes is better than having too many shapes? It's really odd how you can capture a likeness with only a few shapes. I've heard that having more shapes is the answer to creating a realistic look, but simpler portraits seem to still capture the likeness!

Less is more in my opinion. Simplicity is generally the best solution

I can’t find any portrait tutorial of yours that doesn’t have a preliminary sketch already in place. Is there any I can find where you really start from scratch?

Nice video and good advice, but if you look carefully at his face in the any online photos, you’ll notice that sure, he has the body of a meathead, but his face is not roughy hewn. In fact, a bit of a babyface hint is going on there. To my eyes, the sketch came out more like standard meathead stereotype than this guy’s actual face.
