Eating Out in Victorian London (Fast Food for the Poor in the 19th Century)

- Eating at a coffee house in the East End was dirt cheap, but at the price of a dirty and fetid atmosphere. Eating out cheap in 19th Century Victorian London didn’t mean eating well and it certainly wasn’t always healthy. The cooked meats could be tough, musty or tainted. And the coffee? Well, the name was no more than a misnomer, for the concoction that could be drunk with your crust of bread might look muddy like coffee, but be anything but: more likely a mix of chicory and plant refuse.

I found the intro very boring and long and the voice is not good as you need an atmosphere 😑
I am a minger but I must be cleaner then 99.99% of Victorian East Enders.
It's great to hear you like the channel. I hope you enjoy the history!
@@FactFeast am I guessing London had once been a cowboy?

I live in a homeless shelter, watching these videos makes me realise my life is not that bad, if you understand what I mean.
Here's hoping your circumstances improve! You have somewhere we can donate?
Sorry to hear that mate. I hope your accommodation situation improves soon. I remember the great feeling I got when I was handed a bunch of keys after a stint of homelessness. Stay positive,it will happen soon for you too.
Sorry to hear you're in a tough spot. Glad to hear you've a billet in a shelter. For you personally what do you need to get up and out?
Thinking of you and sending prayers things improve for you.
I hope your situation has improved now 🧡

Never has more truer words been spoken, if you was having a collection for a good cause I'm pretty sure that a poor person with only £5 to their name would give you 50p.......how many rich people would give you 10% of their wealth? None. 🤔
The description of "tough, musty or tainted meat" reminds me of the very suspicious sausages served at Mrs Miggin's Pie Shop.
Before refrigeration, it's likely meat served around the world was musty or tainted.
100+ years of progress! I was born in a refugee camp shortly after the Vietnam War. Even we ate better.
To bad we are going backwards under liberal leaders
@@italiantraditionalcatholic2390 You couldn't be more correct. It is sad but true
I think the refugees of the Vietnam war ate better than the English of today.
My Grandma was born in 1898 and her husband died of Tuberculosis. I can't even begin to imagine how difficult it must of been for her especially as she had a son with him. Obviously everyone had their place in those times. The woman in the home the man at work. Although I am very proud of my Grandparents. My Grandad my Grandma's 2nd Husband was a coal miner all his working life and was trapped in the mine many times. And my Grandma was a midwife.
It's hard to realize that some people who lived through the 19th century and the two Worl Wars were still alive recently, it feels so distant
I would love to hear her stories about living through the turn of the century and different world wars! I imagine she was a wealth of information! She sounds like such a very strong person!
It’s hard to imagine that this lifestyle was almost within living memory. My grandparents were alive during world war 1. My great grandfather, who I just remember, actually fought in WW1 in the household cavalry, he actually fought, on a horse. It was called Dolly Grey and got shot from under him while rescuing a senior officer, I have his medal
The more dire my economic situation gets, it is still better than most of Victorian London's dispossessed, starving, inhabitants.
Thank you Fact Verse for putting things in perspective for me.
rest assured, the wealthy want the Victorian destitution back, the hungry will work for any scraps.
@@shaunmooney2834 True, and weird it is. Why do the wealthy need an underclass?
So as long as we don't have a life expectancy of 38, lose 3 out of 5 of our children before their 5th birthdays and aren't paying half a day's wages to sleep leaning up against a rope in a stinking hovel we should be thankful?
If you want to experience the same horror now come visit a developing nation. I've seen so many things...
@@earthalydelights Yes we should be thankful for what we have. Keep that in mind, and you may find empathy in your heart. Be safe.
The Victorian age is fascinating to me, indeed, but I am ever so glad to be living in the 21st century, thank you very much!!! :)
My pleasure - glad it was interesting to watch. Thank you!
Better get me some more links then.
I live in South Africa, a hell of a lot of people still live like this. All over the world in fact, times haven't changed THAT much. You, like me, is just lucky enough to have been born in higher social/economic status.
@@ANWRocketMan That is true.
Ppl still live like this the world over as we haven’t learned a single thing about how to treat our indigent and poor working class ppl since then. It’s sad and unfortunate that the classes haven’t been inclined to help those less fortunate . Some share their wealth but most are greedy and could care less about this human suffering. It breaks my heart and makes me happy for the very little I do have but one just needs to walk down many low income state streets be it here in a city or a country anywhere in the world . We are a selfish society.
Amidst clogged sea of influencers and look at me videos, channels like this are so refreshing. Makes me hold out hope for the internet and what it can bring as a resource. Thank you for your hard work. :D
Thank you for saying so. It's really nice to hear when a viewer finds a video interesting or informative.
A ray of light indeed.
I love the quote "demonstrating anew that the poor are often the most charitable". Thank you Mr. London, may we all live up to that example.
I am from the Southern US; my forebears, however were from Pembrokeshire and Swansea, Wales, and County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. But I am an unrepentant Anglophile, and my wife says I was born out of place and time, that I should have been happy as a detective in Victorian England. That's how well she knows me. I hereby unashamedly profess my love of your channel.
Thank you for your kind comment - I’m really glad you enjoy the channel. Working on more content.
Victoria must have been too busy auditing her possessions to notice she had her own " black hole of Calcutta " just a few miles from her palace.

London's book you read from, The People Of The Abyss, is a fascinating read. Jack London set about to explore the conditions of the lives of those in the East End. He was a famous and best selling author, but like most other famous people of the pen, was not known by appearance, especially away from his home country. In order to fit in with the people whose lives he was examining, he outfitted himself with rough clothing from a second-hand store. He created the appearance of an American sailor down on his luck. The gold Sovereign mentioned had been sewn into the lining of his coat, to be used in emergency.
His reporting had some effect on the sentiments of the socially liberal society, and moved some people to charity and lobbying for changes in laws. I read the book in the middle 1980s, and had an effect upon me that I remain grateful for. It reached me as an antidote to the writings of Ayn Rand, and began my turn into a decent human being that cares about the lives of others.
If you’d like to watch, I have a video on my channel with the account of the beginning of his journey in London: ‘A Tourist in East End Victorian London.’ Thank you for your comment.
@@FactFeast Thanks, I'll check it out. I'm a new subscriber, so I'm sure to spend some time combing through.

It killed hundreds of thousands, in just London. What’s not to love?
I love these videos, they really portray the atmosphere of the time. But the various accents are very hit and miss. Your Irish accent and way of speaking is perfect for these videos. Keep up the good work 👍
Practice will improve the accents, though.
I like how you can change your voice to 3 distinct voices in a matter of a second
In America,in 1942, many men were rejected for service due to the fact that they were under weight or male nourished.
that was the british if im not mistaken started in world war 1 they found alot of their troops were underweight and stunted from lack of nutrition they then put meals in place at schools and pushed nutrition to get them back in fighting force. by time ww2 came around they were back up to weight Edit: not just weight but their height was affected from malnourishment
Also their bones where weak due to lack of nutrients especially calcium, which made them shorter. I've seen over the years elderly people doubled over with only a walking stick to assist them. (Rickets)
Only the female nourished were fit.

2022 and yesterday an MP berated the poor of the UK for not knowing how to cook a meal for 30p a day with ingredients given by a food bank. The same MP who claimed £219,000 in expenses alone last year.
MeeloDeShmeelo
Never trust a Tory.
The conservative party, love to see the poorest in society downtrodden.
I might agree with that MP that people need to learn to Cook from scratch, BUT... The boxes people get from Food Banks are not always what they project/promote and make look nice and complete in the ads.
The food bank here, locally in my area in the US, ought to be investigated. Many of my customers (while delivering mail; people talk to me) got boxes from Food Bank, prepackaged, they'd just hand you a box. One young woman, (family of 4, incl 2 small children), rec'd in her box, (among other, usable things), a box of 6 five pound blocks of frozen sausage. A woman in her 80s rec'd 5 five pound bags of fresh peaches; another woman, also elderly, 2 mesh bags of 16 fresh limes each; while another couple got 7 four pound bags of sweet potatoes.
Are Food Bank workers that freaking lazy to not divide things up? I'm sure the grocers and sausage makers donate their product in good faith that it will be distributed widely and evenly. But the way it is handed out by Food Bank merely ensures that if they don't share it out, give half away, it will go to waste.
I don't know about Food Bank in the UK, but here, with the boxes they give out, even I might be hard-pressed to create a meal from the disparate collection of food in a box from Food Bank alone.
A good illustration of what happens when there are no government regulations and businessmen are free to compete.
A newbe to Fact Feast.. Truly, truly fascinating!!! How these people survived with what little they had is a miracle.

@@FactFeast no thank you for putting it out
The accents really bring your tales to life! Very evocative. I don't live in the UK anymore, but its really shocking to see the direct comparisons nowadays there with Victorian times. A nation now with such endemic poverty that food banks are the norm, people having to work three jobs just to feed their kids, kids going without school dinners or not going to school at all because they have to care for parents or siblings. All whilst the government continue to treat the public purse like a cash machine and completely dismantle regulations and our rights. Its a shocking parallel.
Yeah, just think of all the billions being sent to supply weapons and military support in Ukraine. If USA was invaded tomorrow, I don't think we would see a penny from most rest of world. Question is who eventually going get stuck these outlays. U know who....
I'm always thankful for food & to be able to go grocery shopping!

I find the words of those who lived such difficult lives compelling, as these are the lives many endured.
Of course this could be said of many places in many parts of the world at that time.
But it's interesting that Jack London chronicaled this particular area.

Describing the people pawing over the scraps of meat with their dirty fingers reminded me of the produce department of Kroger in Covington KY. Ugh.
Read “ children of the abyss “ some years ago. Found it hard to imagine people living like that.
“The Iron Heel “ makes George Orwell look a bit weedy btw.
I couldn’t get through the Iron Heel. Something about it just seemed so hokey and preachy and stereotyped. The agenda was pushed way too overtly to make a plausible example.
Fact. During this same time period, Germany became the first nation in human history, beginning in 1870, to establish universal social security and health care under Bismarck and Catholic Bishop Von Ketteler.
If that’s true why were there so many German immigrants in Britain including my great grandfather in 1870s?
@@grannye7638 - Grass looks greener..... you know the old saying. You hear what Jack London wrote here, there are many high paying jobs in the US than in Europe. But, it's true what he says, Germany was one of the first for universal healthcare for all and free basic education to all children.

I tried to find a copy of the People of the Abyss at the local library years ago. I did know the head librarian and he went back to the 'stacks' and came back after 20 minutes covered in dust with a very dusty old book. It was fascinating read but very short and heartbreaking. As has been noted before the majority of charity and help for the poor and the crawlers came from their own people. They knew what it was like to be cold and hungry. Sadly, even today, statistics show that the majority of people who donate to charity or volunteer in charities are of the working or middle class. The wealthy may donate to build a library or hospital wing with their names plastered on them but to actually give real boots on the ground help the poor it is left up to the working/middle class. It seems that the more you have the less likely you are to help or share your good fortune. The rich seem to think that being poor was moral failing both then and now.
Pretty good job on the American accent!
Or course the yank got out bantered in the end 😂🤷♂️

Gaaaah, what happened? The standard of living in the U.S has gone way down, and we have far less services and lower pay than many other countries. Not to mention substandard medical care, with obstacles to access, resulting in more chronic health conditions, obesity, and one of the highest infant mortality rates in the civilized world.
