    For the have a ton of stuff already OG collectors I think the most important to get are Caverns of Mars 2600 and Bounty Bob Strikes Back for 7800. The rest are all good but depends on what you are collecting. The 7800+ is most likely a 2600+ (which plays 7800 games) with newer firmware. One question I haven't yet heard the answer for is if the 7800+ will have a functional pause feature, hopefully it does.

    Been a collector since 2002, and now own over 3000 games. The only Atari I own is a Jaguar bought complete in box back in 2008, and now own roughly 40 of the 50 official games all complete.
    I always said I would own a 2600, Intellivision, and Colecovision one day, but decided to give up once we entered the HD era (I only own one CRT).
    I am so jacked and excited for the 7800+ as I had made the decision about 20 years ago to go with thr 7800 over the 2600 due to it's compatibility with the 2600.
    Obviously, I never bought one sadly, but this one coming out with support for modern displays, and new games/ports as well that are even compatible with original hardware.....

    They should also apply for a license to LucasFilm and finally do Return of the Jedi in the same wireframe 3D style as their original Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back arcade cabinets. They could stick out a collection of all three games, plus Parker Bros' two Star Wars games and the isometic ROTJ and the other unreleased games they were working on and have that on all the current consoles and PC, but do some physical carts fo those who want to go old school.

    I wish that technology could have somehow stalled or maxed out at the 7800 and NES, it would be amazing to see how many great games could have been created if that was all there is and creators had to really push the liits of the technology and they’re own creativity. (sorry your genesis never came out in this timeline, but my real happy zone was the 80s video games. I never really went past that. My girlfriend came with a gamecube, and I really like the format of that console, but the games don’t do it for me the same way. Theres some kind of magic in the 8 bit format, it seems to be a sweet spot between graphics capability and having to use your own imagination the way you do when reading a book that is really enjoyable and comforting to me.

  • @PinBallReviewerRepairs

    I am nuts and I pre-ordered my 7800+.
    I did not have to as I already have the 2600+ which essentially they are the same boards pretty much in that both can do 2600 & 7800 games.
    It is my way of supporting a company that is giving us systems that can run on HDMI and do not have to mess with trying to get the original hardware working on modern TVs and such.
    My honest opinion is I never was into those plug and play type as I wanted to be able to play my old carts too.
    And that is my nutty excuse of buying a 2600+ and now a 7800+ as it is me just not only supporting Atari but giving my thumbs up of approval of making a retro game system that actually plays the old and new carts and not just another plug and play that has like 40 games or something.
    And the instance I get wind of an Intellivision+ I am so on that console.
    I feel it in my old bones that Atari will do an Intellivision+ it is just when we will get it. :)

    Nice, but why is the stick on the left side of the wireless controller? When I played videogames in the 80's and 90's, I always used my right hand for the joystick. Since all new controllers have the sticks on the left, I am limited on just using the classic controller or it is a catastrophic failure!

    I've been waiting a year for "Save Mary" and "Dark Chambers" for the 2600+ -- Atari isn't getting another dime from me until they ship my games.

    My 2600+ doesn’t recognize my Atariage 2600 Turbo with the prototype and 2008 finished released built in. That may be the reason why Frenzy and Berzerk got separated for compatibility for these new + consoles.

    Speaking as a C64 gamer, I'm jealous of that Epyx "Games" collection! I didn't even know such a things was possible (licensing-wise).
    The C64 was never big on first party software, but stuff like Epyx's "Games" games? It would be really awesome if whoever's in charge of Commodore's stuff could pull off these sorts of deals for old C64 titles.
    Atari really has their act together, selling fans lots of stuff.
    I can understand why Nintendo focuses on more profitable and relevant current stuff, but imagine what Apple or Microsoft could do on the side.
    An Apple 2 Classic could be comfortably shrunk a good 25% while retaining the same full size keyboard, and it could be Apple IIGS compatible.
    A Microsoft retro gaming machine could license the appearance of a random 80s PC clone and provide an old school DOS gaming experience.
    They could be doing cool retro stuff like Atari. Why not?

    Trying to work on a 2600+ video for this month. Didn’t do any of the updates though as none of them offered Keyboard and Driving controller use. At least as far as I could tell.
    Look to finish 2600+ video by end of month. We’ll see how 7800+ looks.

    I haven't gotten a 2600+ yet. So now the question is, do I skip straight to the 7800+ or get both? Given the similar functionality, getting both would probably be more for the aesthetics of it. And I still have my original Vader 2600 and it mostly works (game select switch is broken).
    Decisions decisions.
    Definitely want to pick up some of the new 2600 and 7800 games.

      @johnhancockretro  Před 23 dny +3

      I would choose one or the other. Honestly I would go with the 7800+ but that is me. This also is shipping with the most recent firmware so there is an advantage to getting this one out of the box.

    I also really want to see them offer an internal pokey/hokey! So disappointing about the XM Module never making it into wider distribution for people with original hardware. Getting a built-in soundchip upgrade, a much needed upgrade, is about the only thing that could make me consider getting one.

    • @johnhancockretro
      @johnhancockretro  Před 23 dny

      With the updates the 2600+ can emulate pokey and XM sound. My 7800 games takes advantage of this. Not extra special sound chips needed. The 7800+ won’t need these updates as it should play aftermarket games out of the box.

  • @darrencarter9812
    @darrencarter9812 Před 21 dnem

    I think they should add pokey and DPC emulation to the 2600/7800 plus models, and release patched versions of the carts that included the sound chip in the cart or used the DPC (like Pitfall 2). I doubt there would be any way to get those games to work otherwise (although I just saw Ballblazer listed as working and it is a pokey game)... and the same could be done for Ram Plus carts from CBS... but for those they might be able to patch where calls to the extra ram use the extra ram in the console.
    There are newer homebrews (such as Space Rocks) using the DPC (well, DPC+) chip as well.
    Honestly, Pitfall 2 is one of the best games of all time for the 2600. It would be awesome to see it working on the new systems. Re-releases of 7800 games using Pokey Emulation (on the 7800+) would be great to see as well. One of the worst decisions of all time was leaving the Pokey off of the 7800 system in favor of having it added to the individual carts. TIA sound was poor at best, and the lack of quality audio output really hamstrung the 7800 against the NES. Many of the 7800 games LOOK better than the NES version - but the sound ruined the experience.

      @johnhancockretro  Před 21 dnem

    I recently took possession of an old Atari7800ProSystem and about two dozen game cartridges, but the joysticks don't work.
    I have a CRT TV and a good RF to HDMI adapter so video out doesn't matter to me. Old is as good as new.
    I got excited when I saw this 7800+ because I'm hoping Atari has learned from the 2600+ and this one will work better.
    But I think I'll be good with just getting replacement controllers. The CX78+ Gamepad is sold out at Amazon and Atari.
    I'm not any more interested in wireless controllers than I was when Atari first introduced wireless joysticks in the '80s.
    I'll need hardwired DB-9 compatibility for my old console.
