Interesting! In the US, we don't usually put roughage in the grain, but make sure to feed hay before grain so they have the fiber in their stomachs to help the grain pass through and prevent their stomach acid from being overactive. I wish we did feed like this though. I'm a huge believer in tons of roughage and grain as a supplemental element of their diet. Beet pulp is more commonly added to grain out here, but even that isn't for its fiber, but to aid in weight gain. My horse gets basically double the hay of everyone else at the barn, in a hay bag and some loose in his stall. Sometimes I get funny looks when they find out how much hay my guy gets, but I'd rather know he has enough to last him through the night. I also wish more people out here would understand that grain shouldn't be given in large quantities and for weight gain. Here, if there is a thin horse, even if it's out of work, it tends to receive way too much grain for their workload. (I know this is a super late comment, but I just found it really interesting how different we feed out here.)
Kathryn Schaller I have 6 horses that all eat in hay bags but my one horse is older and gets three times as much food, beet pulp is fed to them all though. Fyi im from the US too!
This Esme can you please add to your beginner series with *everything you need for your first horse* for eg List the things you would need to buy before you pick them up Head collar, lead rope, grooming kit feed and water buckets, bedding ect. Plzzzzz that would mean he absolute world to me. Ps. I have watched all of your videos about 20 times😂
I don’t have a horse yet but I’ve watched several other videos today on horse care and none helped as much as this one. Honestly none other really helped at all. This is the first one to really answer my questions instead of just telling me the blatantly obvious. Thank you for making this. You have possibly just earned a new subscriber.
I love your videos you inspired me now im also riding .it is awsome to ride a horse I love it I hope everyone who watches this will start riding because it is awsome🐴🐴
Your horses are so lucky to have you as an owner. Where I learn horse riding they don't feed the horses properly. And we can see their ribs. Awesome video tho!
Thanks so much for this, I know this was a while ago but it’s a great video!! Great editing too!! You must have worked really hard on finding all the facts and the editing!! This was really helpful!! Have a great day xxx
I learnt all about this and choke at my pony club. It really helped me and because of you making this video I have gone up a level! So thank you so much 😊
I use a kitchen wand whisk with a handle, so I don't have to bend down so much to clean sides & can scrub while use some horse water at same time. I should get one with a longer handle! If whisk gets too dirty, then I pop it into the dishwasher.
Minimum of 1 1/2 hrs before exercise, minimum of 1/2 hr after exercise and 1/2 hr before turning out for feeding. I usually leave 2 hrs between feeding and working. So when going out driving, I'll get horse in at 8, feed them, leave them to eat and relax while I clean carriage and harness, about 9 am give them a good groom, before harnessing up and get myself ready and then go out about 9.45 -10 am
I am faria and i am 8 years old i use my dady,s Account love you and your horses Stay Bleest and Stay Happy and your horses too. Best You Tuber Ever and Also your Horses and Donkeys too.
Thank you so much for the tips i think need to change some things in my feed routine! this was so helpful, by the way i love all your videos there amazing!
My horse lives in a field with a few other horses. (2) she gets fed 2x a day. The morning and the evening. She gets: one scoop of sweet feed 1 section of hay (1 flake) Grass 24/7 She only gets ridden 2/3x a week.
Lucero Moyano Lo siento, pero no tengo muchos suscriptores españoles así que no tengo subtítulos, ya que me llevaría mucho tiempo para traducirlos como sólo he estado aprendiendo español durante unos 5 años en la escuela :(
Feeding your horse at the same time everyday is actually a bad idea… let’s say you’re at an event and can’t feed at that time cause you’re riding or something, that horse will k ow it’s about to be feeding time and when it doesn’t get it it will act out or start noding etc. change up the time of feed not huge gaps of time but let the horse know feeding time isn’t predictable.
You make som really good points in this video :) however, it is important not to work your horse on an empty stomach. You are right when saying that the horse should not eat a lot of grain etc. before work, but you should feed it hay/alfalfa or similar to reduce the stomach acid and therefore avoid ulcers.
Two horses live across the road from me. They are not looked after very well. They get old dusty hay and get no exercise. The owners are not very kind so I can't talk to them. I feed them apples carrots and oats. They also don't get cleaned very often maybe once a moth.what else can I do?
I'm doing a 98 day mustang gentling competition in the winter. They will be fed alfalfa and grass hay, but I'm not sure what grains/supplements to feed them. They are a yearling, and won't be ridden at all, but will be lunged everyday along with groundwork daily. What do you think?

I'm so confused on feeding horses, like how do you know how much they intake grass when outside, and how much hay to give them, and if they have enough hay and grass so they don't need any grain
Ajringallo 04 You can't measure how much grass they eat but you can with hay but that is not a problem as the quality of the grass in the field changes at different times of the year. If your horse is looking over weight you can strip graze their field by putting up an electric fence so there is less grass that they can eat or you can up their exercise. When you buy grain from your store on the back of the packet is says how much you should feed your horse on the back depending on work, and height. But if they look over or under weight feed a bit more/less. I mostly do it by eye as Casper's condition varies :)
Theskewbaldshowjumper H best thing to prevent choke is by dampening your feed, I was told this by a vet as the most cases of choke he had seen was from non dampened feed x
Hey esme, could I have some help with my pony as I give him around 1 or 2 treats a day but if I feed them to him by hand he starts to get annoyed as I don't have any more but the sent is till on my hand. I have tried throwing them into the stable but he doesn't see where I have thrown them despite me standing near it. I'm not sure what to to do. ~ Emmie xx
I'm trying to get my own horse and I might be getting one so I'm just randomly watching horse care videos even though I help out at my riding school so I already do but better to know some extra information then don't know it and make your horse sick
I can tell you worked hard on the editing! There was a lot of helpful information in this video. Thank you for making this!
Silver Equine Thanks glad you enjoyed it☺️

very nice video
I'm doing a 98 day mustang gentling competition in the winter. They will be fed alfalfa and grass hay, but I'm not sure what grains/supplements to feed them. They are a yearling, and won't be ridden at all, but will be lunged everyday along with groundwork daily. What do you think?

Where did you get the buckets?
what is substrate?
This was so helpful
So you said not to feed directly before or after exercise but my horse is in the field 24/7 with other horses and he always has access to hay/grass so should I let him eat or make him stay the the barn for awhile after riding?
Ruffage (grass/hay) is ok. I was mainly talking about feeding them their grain x
The chaff preventing choke isn't strictly true, my gelding isn't allowed chaff with his feed as it actually increases the risk of him choking! :)
Theskewbaldshowjumper H best thing to prevent choke is by dampening your feed, I was told this by a vet as the most cases of choke he had seen was from non dampened feed x
You are so amazing ❤️❤️❤️
Jóeza video

Through the winter season do you feed any of your equines sugar beat?
My new horse is coming so I don’t want him be sick or I don’t want him to be under or over work
How do u know how much to feed each horse/donkey
So do they stay outside overnight?
I'm trying to get my own horse and I might be getting one so I'm just randomly watching horse care videos even though I help out at my riding school so I already do but better to know some extra information then don't know it and make your horse sick
Me too I really want my own horse but I don’t have the time 😕 so I am trying to get a share /loan
PLEASE DO A VIDEO ON HOW TO KEEP A GREY CLEAN AND ANOTHER PC CAMP VIDEO
With the don't feed before or after exercise, is this with any food or just hard feed like chaff? :)
Chelsea Archer mainly hard feed but I personally would leave it a bit before feeding anything x
Ok thankyou! 😁
