*• Despite the way it looks, Maryland's elephant complex is the third largest I've ever seen.*
*• This was the first time I ever saw a baby chimpanzee*
*• The Leopard Lair segment is a little misleading, they've had the Amur for several years but were only renovating the exhibit*
*• Though the Dik-Dik is predominantly featured in this video, the zoo almost acts as if they don't have them - and focuses more on the Blue Duikers they rotate with.*
*• The No-Shows were the Black Crowned Crane, Northern Ground Hornbill, Leopard Tortoise, Blue Duiker, and East African Black Mud Turtle*
*• The zoo's remaining section to our tours is the Maryland Wilderness, though it may be a few years before I ever go back.*

@@ZooTours hello I just thought I would let you know that Knoxville zoo is opening their new state of the art ARCC (amphibian and reptile conservation center) program and facility.
This new facility as I said is state of the art when it comes to reptile care, natural recreation, and local and world wide conservation efforts.
The facility will be representing and educating the public on many species that are highly underrepresented in most AZA zoos and aquariums.
The facility has several sections. That all share large campus on facility.
Firstly their is the education and conservation center which will be hosting educational opportunities and events curated by the Knoxville zoo.
Secondly there is a large state of the art neotropical green house that will not only serve as a indoor tropical planter zone for guest to experience, but will also serve as home to the multiple species of endangered tortoises that make up their phenomenal tortoise conservation program.
Third there is a large open concept natural wetlands that doubles as a aviary built to sustain numerous species of tropical bird species and the numerous local and exotic semi aquatic turtle species Knoxville has also had notable success in conserving.
Fourth is a all new river otter exhibit, built to go so g with and help represent the aforementioned wetlands exhibit.
Fifth is the two part public reptile conservation Building which will be representing as I mentioned earlier multiple species of smaller crocodilian not often represented in zoological facilities such as the dwarf crocodile and Cuban crocodile.
The second portion of the exhibit will focus on snakes venomous and non from around the world, as well as amphibians, larger turtles, and numerous species of uncommonly represented lizards such as Fiji banded iguana and green tree monitor.
Not to mention this facility will be open to a exceptional open concept two toes sloth exhibit which allows the sloth to freely climb in trees that over hang just above guests heads.
This new facility will be officially open to the larger public on the 12th of April!

Africa is honestly a common theme for many zoo exhibits but who would blame them Africa is home to many large and beautiful species

I love going to the Maryland Zoo from DC! I do wish the African elephants had a larger/more enriching exhibit for them (along with the bears but that's a different exhibit). I think MZ has made so many steps in the right direction and I'm excited to see how it grows and I'm optimistic that it will continue to develop these exhibits in the future!

Man, you got pretty lucky with animals in that trip. You got the sitatunga in the water, the porcupines weren’t sleeping, the dik-diks were out, and you caught the lemurs in the Colobus Trail.

I think it's safe to say that reptiles are not my strong suit. The leopard tortoise was not signed, but was listed on the website, so I assumed it was not on exhibit and they forgot to update the site.

Another well done video Zach. I can tell you put a lot of work into these. My kids are still small and it’s going to be a while before I can travel with them, so until then I’ll experience the far away zoos through you.

You should go to the El Paso Zoo, they recently opened a Chihuahuan Desert exhibit with some amazing enclosure designs, there's also a very nice Aviary and South American Pavillion

Guess what, the Maryland Zoo unveiled their 10-year master plan this month. The master plan includes adding the Gateway Building near the entrance, which will feature indoor/outdoor habitats for reptiles and amphibians such as Asian water monitor and Gila monster. In the Main Valley (reopened in September 2021), will be a gibbon and Steller's sea eagle habitats. In the Maryland Wilderness and Children's Zoo area, they will add a red wolf habitat and a new bald eagle and snowy owl habitat. At the Northern Passage exhibit, habitats for the porcupine, skunk, and wolverine, will be added with an expanded grizzly bear exhibit and new pathways. There will also be a rope course, splash zone play area, and a safari camp. You can see more details of the master plan in this following link: www.marylandzoo.org/news-and-updates/2022/08/maryland-zoo-announces-new-master-plan/.

This section seems pretty good! I think the elephants might need some more upgrades when it comes to stimulation, but I think at the rate Maryland Zoo is going they will definitely give them that in the future.

Snazzy! Say, are you gonna visit the San Diego Zoo Safari Park because they opened up the Australia Walkthrough attraction & welcomed 2 duck-billed platypuses there. Also, if you visit the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, you could film a video of any exhibit attraction you like to visit & maybe get a glimpse of Wooly Bill the animatronic saltwater crocodile as well! 3:25 I guess it’s not really that big a deal, but I wish Amur leopards weren’t the only subspecies the AZA kept in this country. Yeah, I know they’re critically endangered and space is limited... but we do have breeding programs for three tiger subspecies.
