Lyrics:
April, I can hear your anger a marching
Here it comes again
And the flowers will forgive your rage and your barking
Here it comes again
The grass is dying, and the water comes to revive it
Here it comes again
The great whisper across the plains gives to thunder
Here it comes again
There's a tree line somewhere nobody knows
We've been pining and now we're soaked to the bone
We've been pining and now we want to go home
It's the devil we know
Lower the curtain, let the rain come down like a spirit
Let it hit the ground
Come the memory, come the shivering cold, let the rain fall
It's the devil we know
It's the devil we know
It's the devil we know - Hudba
Your music are like blooming flowers in early spring .."here it comes again" Mmmmm ❤️🙏
Nothing makes me homesick quite like this. I left Indiana when I was twelve, and I've yet to feel so at home anywhere else. Their songs evoke all of the things I love about that place.
This song is perfection
Softness in this song is a beauty! no doubt wonderful voices behind this "Devil we know" Song
I always keep coming back here. Gorgeous songwriting and playing!
I felt the spirit so strong just now with this.
A beautiful song, awesome production and harmonies by Lily and Madeleine, and a great video of the sisters playing music
I still love this song, it's a gem.
I come back to this song so often... just brilliant! :)
Way to bring the art and simplicity back into music girls. Keep it up!
I love to play this song driving, on cruise control, especially, out in the flat lands of Illinois and Indiana - north on I-65 heading up to Chicago from Indy, for instance - running into a big rainstorm.
Poor Lil & Mad got "soaked to the bone" out there, pining away at the tree line.
"Let the rain come down, like a spirit, let it hit the ground...."
"The grass is dying, and the water comes to revive it....the great whisper, across the plains gives to thunder...."
Beautiful.
They are from Indiana too!
I live in Indianapolis but am from Chicago originally. Lots of trips to Chicago on I-65.
I've just discovered those girls and their songs and musics and also their amazing VOICES ! Wouahh, wonderful, beautiful, sooo goooood !!
Still get goosebumps. Your music lifts my mood. Thank you.
Beautiful girls, beautiful, misic, beautiful songs, beautiful videos, everything is beautiful here. Keep going.
definitely one of my favorite things.
Wow girls, you just blow me away! How beautiful! Thank you for sharing such a wonderful gift.
Oh my god. Writing and creating music looks so much fun. I want to do this for the rest of my life.
I just went to your mile of music concert and I loved it. You even performed this song!!! I also got front row seat!!
Lyrically beautiful.. absolutely adore this song.
Sometimes songs get stuck in my head like a soundtrack, I guess if my subconscious mind feels that it fits the situation. Then it plays in the background over and over, barely noticeable. This was the soundtrack in my mind when I held my dad's hand as the nurses unplugged his life support. His heart failed unexpectedly 2 days earlier and everything after that was borrowed time
Sometimes grief is like wading through a shallow lake and not being able to see the shore. Sometimes the waves go over your head and you struggle to get air. Sometimes you wonder if you'll ever see the shore again. This time, for me it's like a room in my house that I try to avoid but is always there. The last verse of this song is like that room's doorway
I don't know what the lyrics mean but I know how they make me feel: like a warm hug from a friend and like permission to cry into their shoulder
Bought the first album yesterday -actually ordered it - based on this song alone. This is beautiful.
Indianapolis got hit with a mega thunderstorm yesterday (8/24/2016). It just blew in late in the afternoon, spewing tornadoes, lightning and hail. Kokomo Indiana, about 40 miles north of Indy got hit REAL Hard. Heck, a tornado touched down IN THE CITY of Indianapolis itself, at 21st & Ritter! About 3 miles from where I live in Broad Ripple. That's where Lil & Mad grew up, Broad Ripple.
I left work early to beat the Devil We Know but unfortunately, I got caught in it. I did make it home safely. As soon as I was deluged by blinding rain with lightning bolts hitting all around my car (SCARY!), I popped this classic cut on my Bluetooth sound system.
"Here it comes again. The great whisper, across the plains." Yesss!
Awsome I saw your National broadcast, one word AMAZING!
Love those harmonies so much
sooooo good, so wholesome and yet very intelligent, I'm so glad that these two lovely young women are out there making such beautiful music. i will now go and buy everything that i can get my hands on from them and I'm going to check out a show or two asap...!!!!!!!!!!!!
Exactly!!!!
This is 2020 and I still remember it.
Purchased this from emusic after hearing once. Nice work!
In a class of its own in the music of today.
+Shaun Boden How about the two of them both playing the same keyboard. Cool. Lily is quite skilled on the keyboards.
Yes I noticed Lily playing on a couple of tracks, and was impressed at how she sounded as good as her sister, what I like as well is how I have seen Madeleine praising people on youtube who have done covers of their songs, and I think I saw you commenting on one of those videos yourself.
+Shaun Boden Some covers of their songs are really well done. Others, not so much. They do get a lot of "cover action"...one yardstick of their popularity.
Yeah, there's nobody around playing competent indie folk with harmonies any more. Except, like, everybody.
just beautiful
Beautiful! I love this sound! And I love Indiana! Not from there, but I love that state!
I'm so excited for something new from you guys!
Heard this on NPR's All Songs considered and actually stopped what I was doing and led down so I could enjoy it properly. Great song.

Saw Lil & Mad perform out in Columbus Indiana last weekend (8/26/2017). They did two new songs: Go and Care. Very good.
Beautiful! Can't wait for the album to come out!
These girls must really want into the music business if they made a song about the devil right off the bat.
Hey! I like their "depressing" stuff! It has tremendous depth!

awesome stuff, buying your first album on amazon today
Wow. all I can say. Wow.
lovely
It would be interesting to know the story behind the title. The song sounds
Heavenly to me.
Stormy, rainy spring weather is the Devil We Know - it both gives and takes. "Let the rain come down like a spirit" - "The grass is dying and the water comes to revive it". "Now we're soaked to the bone." "...the great whisper, across the plains gives to thunder..."
Very visual. To me anyway. I see a heavy-duty storm blowing in across the farmlands of Indiana, heading straight for Indianapolis, a type of storm that I'm sure Lily & Madeleine have seen many times. This is their pure Midwestern beauty. They write from what they know.
Jim Moore There's a tree line and we've been pining. When was the last time you even heard the word "pining"? The Midwest has been getting slammed by the Devil We Know this past week. Especially Indianapolis.
Boa sorte para vcs
They were playing this in Waterstones 😄
I like the people who wrote this. Great Song J'z
...reminds me of the beautiful Jessica Grace, 'I Need A New Excuse'
sucesso
Can I get somewhere sheet music for piano, because I love this song and I'd like to learn to play it?
you can improvise on C F Am F and there is some exception in the song they do G and F I don't remember when, you have to play along to know what they doing
I saw a live and madeleine did a C/G and a F/C instead of a normal C and F
keren
Awesome. Maybe ill remix this one too lol.
April, I can hear your anger a-marching
Here it comes again
And the flowers will forgive your rage and your barking
Here it comes again
[Verse 2]
The grass is dying, and the water comes to revive it
Here it comes again
The great whisper across the plains gives to thunder
Here it comes again
[Chorus]
There's a tree line somewhere nobody knows
We've been pining and now we're soaked to the bone
We've been pining and now we want to go home
It's the devil we know
[Verse 3]
Lower the curtain, let the rain come down like a spirit
Let it hit the ground
Come the memories, come the shivering cold, let the rain fall
It's the devil we know
It's the devil we know
It's the devil we know
who writes these songs?
LOL que lindo
AWESOME! listen Lily & Madeleine - The Devil We Know (Remix Otero) its cool
Owen Wilson comes out of nowhere at 1:35.
also there is literally a shot of the older one smiling in this video.
Superbe
Wow, two hot chicks who can actually sing and they don't trill their voice or wear ridiculous outfits...very nice. There is hope for the under 30 crowd.
Madeleine, would you marry me?
wtf is pineing. js
