    You are 100 percent right! Word is an underrated tool for authors. For my last 10 books, I wrote the book in final format. (5 x 8-inches, or 6 x 9-inches). In this way, I have COMPLETE CONTROL over pagination, formatting, drop caps, headers, footers, etc. It also means that I can see printer's spreads and by printing two pages per sheet I can check that the formatting is correct. It saves endless amounts of time. My editor uses a Mac, but makes her editing comments and corrections in Acrobat. This is really good as all the comments are automatically numbered, so if we need to discuss it (she's more than 7,000 miles away). I can just email, "What did you mean in note 43?"

    This was SO helpful!!! I already have Word, so I'll not pay for Atticus and have to start new with learning it yet; I didn't know how much I didn't know about Word, and have used it for years - did my entire manuscript on it - all wrong - LOL - so I'm ok with going back over and putting the manuscript side by side with a blank doc & type it over - it's only 11,680 words, I'm a fast typist, and it'll get me back in touch with the essence of my book, which has taken that proverbial back seat for a few months. Thank you for your great assistance.

    Good video but some critiques. First and foremost, slow your pace down when going through things. Second, you made no mention of how to create a table of contents as well as index, which are very important when writing a manuscript

    I think this video is good for people who are in the drafting stage of the writing process.
    Before the drafting stage, the writer has to do some organization.
    What is Chapter 1 about? How long is Chapter 1? How many scenes? Who are the characters? What do they do? What happens? How does the story progress to Chapter 2?
    Once the writer has organized all the chapters and scenes, the writer can then draft in some kind of word-processing program. The type of word-processing program doesn't matter that much. If the writer does use MS Word, then the writer will be able to format inside the program, and then take the formatted document to Amazon and upload to the platform there... or just submit to the literary agent/publisher/editor.

    Heeeeelp! I have followed EVERYTHING exactly, but after I type my name and book title something goes screwy with numbering the pages. I go to insert, hit page number, click on "top" and box with it placed on the right side. As soon as I do that, the page numbers do appear, but my name and title completely disappear! I don't believe I have any command that allows me to hit "Right Alignment." What the hell am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me. this is beyond frustrating.

    I wonder why you are doing a tutorial on Word when you have Atticus. I've not purchased the latter yet and I wonder if it is worth buying it given that it would appear that you can do all these wonderful things with Word. Or can you? Perhaps having a video on how to write a book using Atticus would be a good idea and even better, a video comparing both tools? Just saying, not that the effort is not appreciated. Thanks.

    • @Kindlepreneur
      @Kindlepreneur  Před 2 lety +2

      Well, for some, they only have the ability for Word or can't afford Atticus - but I agree, it's a superior experience. As for Atticus, there will be more coming soon. :)

    What about using MS Publisher to format a book? Or using Scribus, if MS Office is to much money to spend in the beginning?

      I'm not familiar with it. But I'll look into it.

      @@Kindlepreneur - I used MS Publisher years ago to create a little booklet newsletter. Plus, I created posters for dialysis steps for my Mom. I loved it. Haven’t played around with Scribus as much, but it should work the same.

    • @ChelSierra_Remly
      @ChelSierra_Remly Před 2 lety

      @@Kindlepreneur - In case you might want to look into these: WPS Office (WPS has a free version, and is most like MS Office.), Libre Office, & Open Office. These would work for those who can't afford MS Office in the beginning.

    • @ChelSierra_Remly
      @ChelSierra_Remly Před 2 lety +1

      Ooh. I had another thought. What about putting sections and chapters into a table, or within a text box?
      I've seen inside the "Look Inside" on Amazon, and sometimes the formatter didn't divide the sections well enough and the formatting crossed the barrier. For example, when one page is centered, and it causes all of the chapters to be centered, because of a formatting error.
      This problem is what led me to think about going with Publisher or Scribus instead of a word processor. But, using tables or text boxes might also solve that problem. So, each page or section/chapter could get its own table/text box.
      Publisher & Scribus uses text boxes. And that is why I planned on using one of them for formatting, instead of Word. I forgot that Word has a text box option, so now I'm wondering if that will help keep one section from bleeding into another section. Also, I suppose that PowerPoint / Presentation / Slides / etc. might work, as they are more like Publisher / Scribus.
      If all of these suggestions do a good job of formatting books, that would give everyone options to choose from. Everyone could choose the option that they liked best. And that would be a good thing.

    Hey Dave, this video is more aptly titled, "How to format" in Word as opposed to "How to write" as it doesn't really talk about the writing part (in your examples, the book is done). I'm curious, the reason I watched (because I don't do any of my own formatting) is if there is a way to make Word scroll as I type? I guess, not, sadly, and it's my one complaint about using Word to do the writing of a novel. Constantly having to scroll with my mouse to get the text off the bottom of the screen is very annoying. You mentioned in a comment below you no longer use Scrivener, what is the preferred method for doing the actual writing part?

  • @QuizmasterLaw
    @QuizmasterLaw Před 2 lety +2

    #1 tip for newbies? USE THE STYLES and NOT direct formatting.
    If you don't even know what that is maybe you need an editor. and interior designer. and cover designer.
    You CAN learn all this on your own: I did. But at some point you will notice your typos or your marketing sucks and if it sucks it's because your title is bad, your cover is bad, your interior is improperly formatted and you didn't write compelling ad copy.
    You CAN do it ALL on your own! So I am currently learning marketing. And here we are.
